RE: There's Something About that 5.5 Screen Size

That was smart by apple. And if you have been looking on twitter, and other
social media sites. It quotes and shows a table of 45 percent of galaxy
android users turning their phone in to get the 6Plus. Apple makes too much
money to worry about the little boy on the block. They release 1 hand set a
year, now 2 for the last 2 years, and they sell out all the androids
combined. So I doubt that they are worried. The thin with apple is there
product just works. And playing the waiting game for them this time worked.

I guess time will tell, but if Apple was sitting back waiting for the market
to sort out what screen size was ideal, they were playing a pretty risky
game. They've lost something like 10% to 12% market share to Samsung and
other phones chiefly due to Apple's smaller screen sizes.
Meanwhile, Samsung as the S5 Mini, the S5, the S5 Active, the Note 2, the
Note 3 and the Mega, basically a screen size for every taste.

Seems to me like a truly brilliant and innovative company would have known
two plus years ago that the 5.5 inch screen was the way to go and would have
put out a phone that size then rather than losing all of those sales and
that market share over the last two years. My experience in the computer
industry, although not usually in marketing, is that first to market is
huge! Now Apple looks like a company following the innovative trend and not
setting it.

I'm not knocking Apple. They obviously have people a lot smarter than me
looking at market trends. I just think it's too early to say how brilliant
this move was on their part.

 Hello Everyone,

I can tell you that for the first week I used it, it seemd a bit large
but after all this time, about a year now, I can say that I think the
 5.5 is a perfect size.

Moreover, believe it or not, the 5.5 Note 2 fits in every single
pocket that I place my iPHone 5 S in including my shirt breast pocket.
Just as with my iPhone 5 S, I keep my Galaxy Note 2 in a folio leather
case.

If you take a look at the most popular phones out there, you will
discover that big is in. People seem to love the 5.5 inch screen and
 I cannot blame them.

A while back, Samsun released the Galaxy Mega which comes in at a
 wopping
6.3 inch and the Galaxy Note 3 with a 5.7 inch screen.

Although the Note 3 and the Mega are both fine devices, each with more
features than the Note 2, according to the chatter on the web, their
sales were disappointing because consumers did not like their screen
sizes. After using each of them for 1 day each, I would have to agree.

 There's something about that 5.5.

Apple is truly brilliant. What they did was sit back for a year or
so, disregarding the calls for a larger device and let companies like
Samsung release phone after phone after phone experimenting with
various sizes until they found the right one. Then, after all the
dust has settled, Apple simply releases a device at that sweet spot.

 Absolutely brilliant.

I think most people, after a week or so, will come to love the 5.5
inch display. For better or worse, it is the new normal.

 Just my opinion.

Subject: Waking Up From An iTunes Nightmare That I Helped Create

Hello Everyone,

This message is just an F Y I:

Back in 2007, I purchased my first NAS (network attached storage). For many
of us, attaching a drive that contained its own web server, media server,
and FTP server was exciting and a bit daunting.

The general reason why people like using a network attached storage drive is
so that anyone logged into the network has access to all of the files on the
drive. A NAS provides a kind of localized version of a Cloud. For home
users, before such devices such as a network attached storage drive was
available, if people wanted to share files, they had to setup pier-to-pier
networking or share drives and folders on one computer with another but
doing so meant that the host computer had to be powered on all the time.

Now you history buffs will no doubt find fault in my conclusions but it is
not my goal to write a comprehensive history of technology here; I just want
to sketch out a generalized background for the purpose of perspective.

So, when I purchased my first iPhone, which was a 3GS, I downloaded iTunes
on my Windows computer for the first time. To say that I absolutely hated
iTunes would be the understatement of the millennium (smile). At that time,
I had no real experience with the Mac or with any of Apple's file system or
file handling policies. As a result, in retrospect of course, I made a mess
of things in terms of telling iTunes what to do with what files.

Please keep in mind that iTunes, itself, was very different back in those
days and, on Windows at least, the program did not handle files as well as
it does today. For example, the version of iTunes I started with, could not
play certain video files if they were nested too deeply in the Windows file
system.  No doubt some of you may ask, how was such a scenario possible;
just take my word for it, it was possible and did happen more often than
not, for many of us who tried to impose a Windows type file structure on an
Apple product.

But I digress.

So, when I installed my first copy of iTunes to use with my first iOS
device, way back then, I installed it on the Windows computer's main drive.

As time passed, and I began purchasing apps, creating playlists, importing
photos, etc, I realized that it would only be a matter of time before the
size of my iTunes Library would begin to dwarf the size of my computer's
internal hard drive. I also worried that if anything happened to that
computer, such as becoming infected with a virus, I would lose my iTunes
Library.

What did I do? You guessed it, I transferred my then rather tiny iTunes
Library to my NAS.

Believe it or not, this was quite exciting. What I soon discovered was
that, in addition to making my iTunes Library independent of my primary
computer, since the Library was on a constantly shared drive, I could access
that exact same Library, complete with it's playlists, etc, from any PC on
the network. Again, keep in mind that this was before the days of home
sharing and such.

Remember that I said that iTunes used to have a nested level file limit? In
order to compensate for that little glitch, from within iTunes, I changed
the location, on the NAS, of my Library several times until I found a
formula that worked. I know this may sound arcane to some of you but, we
old timers, had to do a great many things to keep the lights on, as it were.

Once I realized the true power of a NAS, I purchased several more over the
years in order to augment my home network.

Network attached storage devices are wonderful but they do have two major
drawbacks. (1) Many NAS devices will only allow you to access the files via
their built-in web server. This means that you much use an Ethernet cable
not a USB cable to see the files and (2) almost all of the NAS use
proprietary files systems, many based on Linux.

Why is this a problem? If anything happens to the physical enclosure, that
is to say, the box in which the actual disk is installed, even if you can
remove the disk from within the enclosure and place it in a USB box, the
files will not be seen by your computer because of

Hello Kliphton,

Glad to hear that you've got everything backed up.

The short answer is, if both your Mac and Windows computers use the same
iTunes user ID and both computers are authorized on the same account, you
should be good to go.

Also, remember that in order for this to work, the iTunes Library .ITL and
all of your media must also live on the NAS. If any item in your Library
points to any source file not located on the NAS, you will encounter
problems.

Again, best case scenario as in my situation, be certain not to access the
Library with more than one computer at a time doing so will cause read/write
error problems.

Finally, before you attempt doing this for the first time, backup
everything, okay? After you access the Library from either platform and
understand the subtle nuances of doing so, said nuances being outside the
scope of this reply, you will be good to go from then on.

To actually point iTunes to the Library located on the NAS:

1.
From either a Windows computer or a Mac, simply hold down the appropriate
modifier key when Clicking on the iTunes Desktop icon. In Windows, I
believe this is the Shift key and on the Mac, I think it is the Option key.
I do it so rarely that I forget. Someone on this list posted how to do this
using only VoiceOver but I cannot remember the key combination.

2.
You will be given the option to select an existing Library or to create a
new one.

That's all there is to it.

Mark

this up with no issues. If you need any help, my contact info is below.

 Hi there

I am wanting to synchronise my email across Microsoft Outlook 2010 and my
IPhone 5. Specifically, I'm wanting to set up the system so if I delete or
file an email on one device it is reflected on the other device. Ideally, I
would have the same file structure on both devices. I subscribe to a number
of lists and am also wanting these automatically saved into folders. If I
want this to happen on both Windows and the iPhone, am I better to use Gmail
 webmail to do the filtering?

I am happy to use/purchase a third party app if you know it will help in this
 process.

Also, slightly off topic, I have set up rules in Microsoft Outlook but they
don't seem to be running automatically. Is there a way I can have them
running automatically? I have set the message format to IMAP. Might this be
 part of the problem?

Your advice on any of this would be much appreciated. Thanks in anticipation

Is there a way to change your personal ring tone? By this I mean, the ring
that others hear when they call your phone, not the rings you hear when
others call you?

Thanks.

All you do is type the number you want to send to, flick to the text field,

Hi again, Kliphton,

Just out of curiocity, what caused your iPhone to go into DFU mode? Were you
trying to jailbreak and are you sure it’s in DFU mode and not in recovery mode?

Also, I believe Scott is correct in saying that you can restore from iTunes if
your phone is in DFU mode. A manual restore using an IPSW file is of course not
a problem, but I don’t think it’s necessary. Here is a link to an Apple support
thread which seems to also confirm this:

This option is only going to show up after you have restored your phone in

No, anyone can subscribe to NFL AudioPass and use the NFL Mobile app to listen
to radio broadcasts of different games. I did it all last season, and I'm with
ATT. There seems to be a problem with the iPhone app though, in that it
doesn't seem to recognize that you already have an NFL AudioPass subscription.
I got around this by removing NFL Mobile and redownloading it. Now when I tried
to listen to a game, I got a subscribe and a login button. I clicked the login
button and used my NFL.com account, which is the account I used to subscribe to
NFL AudioPass, and everything worked after that.

You have multiple packages to choose from. I get the $20 package which gives me

locally, and that's not a problem with playoff games. I doubt this has anything
to do with what version of IOS you're running. The app is free. You pay for the
AudioPass subscriptions through an in app purchase or from the NFL.com web site.

believe, will have it.
 2. No, not anymore. They used to have disk drives, but have not for a
few years now, just like the Macbook and iMac lines. Disk drives are going
away, and I find that I only rarely miss having one, not even often enough
to make me pick up a USB disk drive.
 3. No, the Mini is a small computer tower. It has no screen, keyboard,
or mouse, though it does have a small internal speaker. It is meant to be
connected to all necessary peripherals. If you're after an all-in-one
solution, a Macbook might be better for you. The iMac is also an option; it
has the tower and screen in one unit (though it is not a touch screen). No
Mac currently offers a touch screen, only iOS devices do that. For the blind
especially, though, a trackpad is just as good, since it lets you feel
around the screen and perform familiar VO gestures to navigate and perform
other actions.

 2. No, not anymore. They used to have disk drives, but have not for a few

has the tower and screen in one unit (though it is not a touch screen). No
Mac currently offers a touch screen, only iOS devices do that. For the

feel around the screen and perform familiar VO gestures to navigate and
 perform other actions.

They are the least expensive option, that is until you have to buy a monitor,
keyboard, and if you prefer track pad. Although any macmini bought after 2012
and beyond, you don’t have to connect a monitor.

Good luck with that one. I have the xbox1, and have been looking for similar
apps. The thing has 3 USB ports, and even when I plug one of my externals into
it, I can't play them that way either. Stupid if you ask me.

It is my guess that the 5C will be discontinued this fall and the 5S will
become the new low-cost phone with a 4 inch screen and there will also be at
least 2 more models of iPhone 6, one with something like a 4.7 inch screen

the A8 processor, Touch Id and of course an improved camera. Most likely
they will also feature a touch screen made completely from sapphire crystal
which is extremely hard and almost impossible to scratch. It will make
 screen protectors basically redundant.
I should add that of course that is just speculation based on the rumours
that are starting to leak. But we shall know in about 6 or 7 weeks when
Apple will have their iPhone event which once again I speculate will be
either on September 2 or 3 or September 9 or 10.

Right arrow fasts forward, left arrow rewinds. The enter key plays, the
space bar pauses, the escape key goes back a menu, or out of the app you are
currently in, and that is pretty much it. If you have a large library like
I do, over 2500 movie titles and 1.5TB of music, you can use first letter
navigation to jump to a certain section of titles. HTH

One thing that works nicely is to swipe between People, Recents and
Favorites instead of finding the buttons at the top. You can double tap and
hold either on the left side of the phone and swipe across to the right
after the triple tone or double tap and hold on the right and swipe across
to the left. This will smoothly and seamlessly move between screens, just
touch the screen after to see if you are in People, Recents or Favorites.

For those who didn't see my previous post as to how you can remove contacts,
here it is again:

1. Double tap on the contact you want to remove

2. Double tap on the More button at the bottom right

3. Double tap on the Block button from the menu which pops up (the
other option is Add to Favorites

4. In the next menu you have the options Block, Block and Remove
and No (the latter is if you change your mind and want to do nothing).

Carol,
I have an iPhone 5 and use YouVersion as one of my Bible apps. I can still
selelct text for email or whatever. I double tap on the word of the verse
and not the verse number. So for instance, John 1:1 you will see the number
one on a line. Then you swipe to the right, and the Scripture will begin
reading. That's where I double-tap with one finger. This allows me to select
the verse(s) Let me know if this is helpful.

Hi to users of any of the Bible apps around)

I have been very saddened recently to discover that I am unable to
select Bible text to send in email etc., with the exception of Daily
 Verses shown on these apps.

 I have used The Bible app, which used to be most popular, You Bible;
I've also used various versions of the Bible Gateway and have noted
they're showing text on a very small part of the screens with no way
to select even one verse of my choosing.

Am I missing something? Does anyone know if this can still be done
 with some sight?

Finally, are there any other apps out there that still allow portions
of text to be selected and used with the iPhone?

Thanks for any help on this.
