reading books with phone or glasses

2024-05-23 Thread dlmlaochi
I have the Envision glasses, and though I didn't get them for this, I would
love it if I could sit back and scan books. My first experience gave me very
poor quality. I usually use a fast flatbed scanner, and I can continue to do
so but would love to use phone or glasses.

Has anybody successfully input books with either glasses or phone, and if
so, how? My preliminary impression is that Seeing AI Ocr is better than
Envision, but again, I haven't tested a lot.

RE: improvements in SIRI?

2024-03-22 Thread dlmlaochi
The story is that with much more use of AI, Siri will improve in iOS 18. I'm
sure it is a priority for them to improve it. It keeps getting worse for now.

RE: Question: Trying to Remember the name of an iOS App that Allowed Off-Road Navigation for the Blind and Low Vision

I would use Voice Vista for at least part of the strategy, and set a beacon at
your front door. I think BlindSquare has a similar capability, perhaps many gps
apps for the blind do.

Good afternoon.
would either of these apps allow me to more easily navigate the paths in my
apartment complex? There are multiple buildings and lots of pathways between
them. I would love to take walks there in the spring, but I fear not being
able to find my way back to my building. Would either of these apps help? Or
would another app be better? Or does anyone have any solutions for this
problem

Hello Everyone and Happy New Year!

Many years ago, there was an iOS app for the blind and low vision

subsequent pins to any location, on or off road, then would provide
feedback when the user wanted to travel that same path in the future.

I remember using it to walk to my mailbox, many, many years ago, at night.
It was quite a nice little app and I wonder if it is still around
 or was renamed or something.

I think the last time I used it was back in 2014, or thereabouts.

Does anyone recall the name of the app or does anyone know of a
similar app that provides the same functionality, these days?

All replies appreciated and, again, Happy New Year to Everyone!

not grasping autoCorrect

2023-09-24 Thread dlmlaochi
In an attempt to improve my writing and perhaps to assist others, I am at
long last playing around with functions such as autoCorrect and Predictive
text. I really don't get autoCorrect. In Notes on my 12 pro still running
iOS16, sometimes I get a bubble, mostly I don't. It doesn't seem like
AugoCorrect in Word, where its purpose is to correct whole words. I guess it
uses the keyboard dictionary, which I believe to be uneditable. I make an
intentional error and hear nothing. If I hear a bubble, and this can happen
in the middle of a word, I'm not entirely sure what to do. I also gather it
is good to turn Spoken Content on in General Accessibility settings, but
this isn't a VoiceOver setting, so I don't understand the interplay of the
settings. I received a document from Apple Disability Support which didn't
answer my questions.

Can anybody enlighten me about all this?

Subject: RE: bluetooth and typing while using voiceove3r

There is no fix, this is simply a result of Bluetooth latency which exists in
even the best and most expensive headsets and sometimes I found that expensive
headsets had more of a delay than inexpensive ones. Even Apple has not figured
this out with their expensive Airpods, Airpods Pro and Airpods Max; maybe some
people now come back and say this is not an issue with these headsets, but then
maybe you just don't notice it because I certainly do. This is also one reason
why I just can't stand using a Bluetooth headset or even a Bluetooth keyboard
with a PC; I type and work much too fast to put up with the slight delay I get
on a Bluetooth keyboard versus no lag I get if I use a Logitech wireless
keyboard using a USB dongle or a wired keyboard. Same goes for my Logitech H800
wireless headset which can work in Bluetooth mode as well as via a USB dongle
plugged into a computer.

alarm app that will sound through earpods

2023-04-18 Thread dlmlaochi
I want to do something a bit unorthodox: I want to be able
to wear a wired Earpod in bed, have an alarm sound, and have it sound
through the earpod and not through the phone speaker. As far as I can tell,
this can't be done with the default alarm app. Since most people won't have
this as a goal, I guess my question is, does anybody have a third-party
alarm app that is accessible and flexible, and which might offer this
functionality?

RE: Voice Dream Scanner Impressed Me

2023-03-13 Thread dlmlaochi
It impresses me too, but I’d like remedial guidance with this. Sometimes I get
the result I want, sometimes I don’t get the whole page. I tend to scan single
sheets when I need to sign something and then return the document. I don’t use
a stand. I turn edge detection on even though the cryptic manual doesn’t seem
to imply that it is necessary. Then I try to listen for the strongest tone. Are
there any other tricks to it. Also, and less important, I tried scanning a book
page with it and unless I hear differently, I’ll stay with my flatbed for that,
which I do less and less anyway.

learning about widgets

2023-01-28 Thread dlmlaochi
Can anybody share good resources for learning about widgets: finding them,
navigating among them, adding them to different screens, ones people find
useful? I know some of this but want a better grasp. When I tried in 16.0 to
add widgets to the Lock screen, I was not at all successful.

perplexed about music recognition, Siri, notifications

2023-01-13 Thread dlmlaochi
I'm playing around with Music Recognition and at the same time trying to get
a grasp on the finer points of managing notifications.

When I enable Music Recognition in control Center, and it does its amazing
(to me) job of recognizing almost all obscure songs I throw at it, the event
is stored in Notification Center. But when I ask Siri "What song is this,"
it tells me, but no notification is created. Hence I can't review the
information, etc.

One can display notifications so that they show as count, stack or list. I
change these options and don't know where the difference shows up, or what
difference they make.

moving apps

2023-01-03 Thread dlmlaochi
I mostly understand how to move apps around the home screen, to and from the
App library, but I do not always get the results I want.

I have a row on my home screen that is empty except for one app. I want to
place an app to the right of that one lone app on that row. I can't do it
consistently.

I sometimes create folders without wanting to do so. VoiceOver announces
"Drop App X before (or after) app y, and that's what I want to do, but when
I double-tap, I've created a folder. Then I have to drag an app out of the
folder to get rid of it.

Can anybody shed any light on what I might be missing in all this?

clueless about emoji

2022-11-06 Thread dlmlaochi
On my iPhone 12Pro, I have three keyboards set up for English, French and
Spanish. On my basic iPad running iPadOs 16.1, I don't have those other
keyboards active, and I can switch between normal and Emoji keyboards. I
looked at Keyboard settings under General and didn't see an Emoji keyboard.
How do I make the Emoji keyboard available on my iPhone? (And perhaps how
did I get rid of it?)
