So is there a podcast or an article out there discussing the benefits of
Google maps? I have long suspected that I'm not taking full advantage of
this program, but don't typically have enough time to do a lot of
exploration.

Hello Carol,

I was going to sit this one out but after reading all the replies I decided to
chime in.

Many of my friends and I have iPhones.

When we go out, almost on a daily basis, we often use both Google Maps on one
device and Apple Maps on the other.

I can tel you that I would choose Apple Maps over Google Maps every time with
regard to ease of use, accuracy, and VoiceOver accessibility. I concede that,
in my experience anyway, many VoiceOver users do not know how to harness the
full power of Apple Maps and that's a shame as I believe it is the best kept
secret weapon in the iOS arsenal.

In 1 for 1 comparison, both apps will get the job done but Apple Maps, once
understood, far surpasses Google Maps in it's design and elegance.

In terms of actual power-route functionality, however, I would say that A T & T
Navigator, a paid subscription service wins hands down but it is not as VO
friendly as many would like it to be; however it is still very usable to an
experienced Navigator veteran. As far as the two free solutions discussed in
this reply, I would say that they are about the same in that regard.

So, in short, if you want a free solutions that will offer the most
feature-pack VoiceOver access, then I definitely vote for Apple Maps.

Again, this is just my opinion.

Mark

Hi Mark and thanks for the answers.
That’s what i get for trying to be lazy or what you might call it and try to
type briefly, it was certainly not my intention to make it sound like you said

Hello Everyone,

In an attempt to reduce list clutter, I will reply to all comments in this one
post:

Krister,
I was very careful to state that, in my experience, VoiceOver users don't
harness the full power of Apple Maps. This means that I am referring to only
the VoiceOver users with whom I have personally discussed the app; in no way
was I making a blanket statement about all VoiceOver users. To answer your
question more specifically, however, the people with whom I conversed, seem to
want to slide their fingers around the display in order to reconnoiter their
location. In my opinion, this is not an effective use of the app. Again, the
people with whom I've spoken seem to be unaware that there is a Favorites area
and a recently used section in the app, just to name a couple of marvelously
accessible features.

Carol,
I use Apple Maps, usually in a vehicle, several times each week. In order to
keep up my skills, however, I sometimes trade off with A T & T Navigator, but
for the most part I have switched to Apple Maps. As for how I use it? I
usually either type in a business name or address, then select the driving
route we wish to follow, then begin navigation. Sometimes, I use the app as a
quick way to look up the telephone number of a business. Of course, I have my
favorite destinations and I keep them stored in the app, as well.

Paul,
I adore my Trekker Breeze as well. When going on extended trips, say across
the country, I always take it with me as a backup to my iPhone. In my opinion,
one can never have too many tools.

Rajiv,
It is certainly not my objective to persuade anyone that one solution is better
than another. In my experience, as recently as yesterday, Apple Maps updates
just as quickly and consistently as A T & T Navigator and Google Maps, even
when one goes off-route. Perhaps the difference between your experience and
mine has something to do with where we are using the devices as altitude, cell
coverage, etc can definitely impact navigation.

Finally, I have Google Maps on my iPhone 6 Plus. I keep it updated and use it
from time-to-time because one never knows when one solution will surpass
another in ease-of-use, feature-set, etc.

Okay, I think I responded to all the replies addressed to me.

Happy and safe traveling to us all.

Mark,I would offer you another perspective.Whilst I agree that AppleMaps is
more full featured, better integrated on iDevices and so on, it deos have one
drawback in comparison to GoogleMaps one one front:If you are the passenger

recalculate routes when the driver chooses a different direction from the

Hello Carol,

I was going to sit this one out but after reading all the replies I decided
to chime in.

Many of my friends and I have iPhones.

When we go out, almost on a daily basis, we often use both Google Maps on
one device and Apple Maps on the other.

I can tel you that I would choose Apple Maps over Google Maps every time
with regard to ease of use, accuracy, and VoiceOver accessibility. I
concede that, in my experience anyway, many VoiceOver users do not know how
to harness the full power of Apple Maps and that's a shame as I believe it
is the best kept secret weapon in the iOS arsenal.

In 1 for 1 comparison, both apps will get the job done but Apple Maps, once
understood, far surpasses Google Maps in it's design and elegance.

In terms of actual power-route functionality, however, I would say that A T
& T Navigator, a paid subscription service wins hands down but it is not as
VO friendly as many would like it to be; however it is still very usable to
an experienced Navigator veteran. As far as the two free solutions
discussed in this reply, I would say that they are about the same in that
regard.

So, in short, if you want a free solutions that will offer the most
feature-pack VoiceOver access, then I definitely vote for Apple Maps.

Again, this is just my opinion.

Hi

I haven't tried too much of this myself as yet, but the latest version of
google maps has simular functionality. There is a voice search where you
say "directions to xxx" where "xxx" is the address you wish to find, and it
will bring up that information.

RE: APPLE MAPS OR GOOGLE MAPS

2015-04-03 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, I have the Google Now app and use it a lot more than Siri actually. With
the Google Now app it has a voice search and you can easily get directions.
Honestly, the only drawback is that in a typical situation you can’t simply
press and hold the home button to activate the Google voice feature, but that’s
ok. Google gets answers faster and generially does things better than Siri
and/or Apple Maps at least for my specific uses.

Re: APPLE MAPS OR GOOGLE MAPS

2015-04-03 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm not sure I'd jump to this conclusion. Sure, Apple is going to hard
code their apps into IOS as the default apps and of course Apple will
integrate their apps together, such as SIRI and Apple Maps, but there's
no reason to think that Cortana couldn't be just as integrated with
non-Apple products, such as Google Maps. Since most people using the
iPhone are going to be using at least some of the Apple apps then in
reality you are correct. You'll get a more integrated experience using
all Apple products.

I prefer Google Maps since I found it so much easier to find my
destinations in Google Maps than Apple Maps. I remember trying to find
directions to Rackspace here in Austin, and I could bring it up in
Google Maps by just typing Rackspace. In Apple Maps, I had to first find
the actual street address. This was a while ago though, but since I've
been happy with Google Maps ever since, I've never gone back to checking
out Apple Maps.

You may not be able to use Google Maps with SIRI, but you can with OK
Google.

Finally, I don't have a problem with Google Maps giving me the street
names to turn onto.

Re: APPLE MAPS OR GOOGLE MAPS

2015-04-03 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi,
Could you explain why Google maps is the better alternative? Yes it has busses,
subways and so on, but can we as blind folks use it? You can’t follow maps in
Google like you can in Apple maps. I don’t know how the route planning
facilities in Apple maps are, in Google maps though they say ”In 50 meters turn
left”, but it doesn’t say what street it should turn into, at least mine
doesn’t. Google maps seems quite accurate though when it comes to telling you
where to turn.
I should say here that i haven’t as of yet tested Apple maps thoroughly so my
observations may or may not be wrong.

Hi all,

If anyone has tried both of these, can you tell me whether Apple Maps works as
well as Google Maps and give me some kind of comparison of them both, please?
