Re: Are there really advantages to LiDAR?

2023-09-21 Thread Wayne Merritt
I got a 13 Pro last year. I had in mind that I would use the LiDar
functions to recognize things and people, but my life changed
drastically last year and I haven't used those features more than a
couple of times. I don't need a Pro level phone now. The next time I'm
eligable for an upgrade, I'll save some money and get the base model
of the phone.

Warmly,
Wayne

I found out later that this text detection feature is part of the magnifier, so
it's the same thing Richard was referring to.

It sounds like text detection does pretty much what all the other things like
that envision AI or voice dream scanner etc. do when you hold your camera over
some text. Whether it’s better or not then those abs, who knows? The point and
shoot sort of thing that they also talk about sounds like it would be
exceedingly frustrating for a totally blind person. And Thomas Dawnville admits
that, saying that it’s probably better for someone with low vision who can see
what they want but can’t read it.

Text detection, a new feature in IOS 17 requires LiDAR. I'm not sure what this
does and how it's different than the text detection I get with the camera now,
but I don't have a LiDAR phone to test this with.

It does help with the door detection feature in the magnifier. Also the image

There are a few apps using it for better object recognition and distance of the

Subject: Are there really advantages to LiDAR?

My question sort of sums it up. I’m thinking about getting a new phone,
although I could wait one more year, since this one is eligible for an upgrade
this year. If I do get a new phone, I am contemplating whether it’s worth it to
go for the pro because of lied AR. There was a lot of hype around it when it
came out, and I haven’t heard much cents. What does it do for us in particular
as blind people? I could care less about taking pictures except for the
purposes of getting descriptions, texts, etc. In other words, regular
photography interests me not one wit.

Hi Richard,

When you mention the magnifier, are you referring to a specific app?

Thanks,
Pam

It does help with the door detection feature in the magnifier. Also the image
description and text identification and people ID in the magnifier as well.
There are a few apps using it for better object recognition and distance of the
object though I think that is only accurate within 15 or 20 feet or something.
The hope is more app developers will find ways to use it. But, at this point,
unless any of those things are high on your list of important features, it may
not be worth the extra money just for that. Note, you get a better processor
chip in the pro models too along with possibly better battery life, so it isn't
just LIDAR that you get in the pro phones.
