You can also lock the record button, by holding it down, and swiping up and to
the right. Unfortunately, voiceover won't announce that the record button is
locked, but when you're done with your message, double tap anywhere on the
screen, swipe to the left or right, until you hear voiceover say, send, double
tap that, and your voice message has been sent.
What I don't understand is, when I receive an audio message, sometimes it comes
through as file type .caf, others, it's an audio message that I just double tap
on and listen. I wish there was a way to set it to just an audio message,
rather than having to find the play button for the file type.

normally type in your message there is an audio button. You do a double tap and
hold and keep your finger held down as you speak when you’re done speaking lift
your finger off of your phone and press send and it will send it.
