Re: heart rate monitors
I have one called Instant Heart Rate Free, which may be similar or the same as the one that Andy mentioned. I haven't used it in a few years and do not recall how accessible it is. When I do need to use it, I typically will put a finger on the camera lens, open the app, and wait until it takes my heart rate. It will then ask me what time of day or what kind of activities I have been doing, like sleeping, working out, after a meal, etc. I can then double tap on the item I want and the rate and activity are recorded, and I believe that information is also shared with the Health app. While it is taking the heart rate initially, you will hear beeps which match your beats per minute. One of these days I want to get an Apple Watch and have a monitor on my rist, but those things cost money and that's something that is in short supply for me right now. RE: Heart Rate monitors
Hi Andy. Thanks for the suggestion. I don't think this will work too well for me as what I'm looking for is an app and heart rate monitor that will give me reading while I'm working out on a tread mill. I'm looking for a chest strap type monitor that is constantly getting your heart beat, realtime and reports that info while you are excersizing. Re: Heart Rate monitors
I know of one called the Helo, it uses your finger against a sensor on the monitor itself for the pulse and will read heart rate, blood pressure and breath rate. The 3 buttons that do the readings are not labeled but all the results are. Let me know off list if you want more information. aeda...@gmail.com Aedan On 18/08/2016 5:28 PM, Rick Alfaro wrote: Hi. charge hr is much better than flex in monitoring your sleep. From: Lois Butterfield Sent: Friday, July 17, 2015 2:40 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Heart Rate Monitors and other health/fitness stuff Hi Seigard, I have had great luck with FitBit. They now have the Charge HR, which is a fitness watch with heart rate monitoring. I don’t happen to have it because I got the apple watch. I do, however, love my Flex and the Aria scale, both of which sync with my phone well and easily. I would assume that the Charge HR would also do that. I read up some on it. It syncs with Run Keeper and other apps and checks your heart rate every second while in a workout. I know that there are graphs involved that would not work but that would be true of most apps. Take care, Lois From: Jeff Clark Sent: Friday, July 17, 2015 8:19 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Heart Rate Monitors and other health/fitness stuff Sieghard, I was in your dilemma about 4 weeks ago and found pretty good luck with the following setup. Polar H7 using the Runkeeper app. The Runkeeper app has some Voiceover issues when I first entered my height/weight etc., but I didn’t enter my info during the initial setup and modified it after setting up the app. Other than that, the app runs pretty good. If you want current pulse and aerobic info there is a GPS button on the screen that you click into to get the self-voicing info. Both my wife and I are using this setup with success. Another tip is to ensure rinsing the Polar monitor contacts both on the strap and unit to ensure a good contact. Keep the contacts moist or it will not transmit to Runkeeper. You may have to play around a little to get the right moisture levels. I just take the strap, run it under the sink for a second and good to go. Yes, it’s a little cold when you put the strap on. LOL Hope this helps and contact me with any further questions. In addition to hardware feedback on the actual HRM I am interested to hear about accessibility of the various apps people use. Re: Heart Rate Monitors and other health/fitness stuff
Hi Seigard, I have had great luck with FitBit. Re: Heart Rate Monitors and other health/fitness stuff
I would doubt if any fitness watches have that. I used to have a chest strap type that did give audible feedback through ear phones. It’s been so long that I don’t remember the name of it. Maybe that will be a feature that will come along with the Apple watch someday to headphones via Bluetooth. RE: Runtastic Heart Rate Monitors: Take your fitness analysis to the next level!
Hi Andy, Yes, Runtastic is accessible with a few limitations: When you first open the app there is a few instructions and it says Page 1 of 3 on the first page. It seems a 3-finger swipe will not advance to the next page, I had to turn Voiceover off and do a normal 1-finger swipe right to left, then when I turned Voiceover back on I was on page 2 of 3 and I repeated this to get to page 3 of 3, then I tapped the Close button at the top. After this I came to another page where Voiceover read all the text of a big list of features and limitations and at the end you have to tap I Agree. You then can sign in with Facebook or set up a Runtastic account although I have no idea why anybody would want to share their heart rate with all their Facebook friends, but then again I think this Facebook integration everywhere is stupid, of course this is just my opinion and not relevant beyond stating my opinion. At some point it told me that in order to measure my resting heart rate you should do that 2 minutes after waking up and I guess that measurement is used as a comparison for later measurements throughout the day. Once you get into the app it will tell you to lightly place your finger over the camera lens making sure it's completely covered and to hold it still. You then hear a series of beeps and a triple tone when the measurement is completed. At that point your heart rate is displayed, but I think it's some sort of graph and not necessarily very useful for a Voiceover user. However, there is a Discard and Save button at the top and if you save it, you can then see your heart rate in the History tab in a fairly straight forward list format, date and time and the heart rate. On that initial screen after the measurement you can also once again share it on Facebook or by email so you could also send yourself an email which would contain the information. I did this, see below: From: Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Thursday, August 01, 2013 9:51 AM To: siegh...@live.ca Subject: Heart rate measurement with your smartphone camera: It works! I just measured my heart rate with my smartphone camera using the Runtastic Heart Rate app. Here are my results: Heart rate: 60 Measurement type: General Avg resting heart rate: - Total measurements: 1 It works! Give it a try and download the Runtastic Heart Rate app for yourself today: http://www.runtastic.com/apps/heartrate/lite http://www.runtastic.com/apps/heartrate/lite?utm_source=heartrate_proutm_m edium=iphoneutm_campaign=share_heartrate_measurement Sent from my iPhone As you can see the average resting heart rate doesn't have a value since I haven't done this measurement. After you measure there is also an area where you can specify When Did you Measure. However, this is followed by 5 unlabelled buttons which Voiceover just announces as Button. I have not taken the time to explore what they might be or ask somebody so I could possibly label them using the custom label feature. After the When Did you measure is another area called General and it asks How did you feel. Once again this is followed by 5 unlabelled buttons. After that is Additional Info and here you have a text field where you can Add a note to this measurement, this seems no problem. Lastly you have the Share It section: Share Facebook Share Twitter Share Mail That's it. The Discard button is at the top left. The Save button is at the top right and you have to touch it,if you touch Discard at the top left and swipe right Voiceover will not go to Save, it appears to jump right over it, but it's easy to find by touching the screen underneath the battery status. After I used it a few times to write this I was at some point presented with a screen with a Close button at the top which advertised Runtastic's so-called Premium apps: Runtastic Pro Roadbike Pro PushUps Pro SitUps Pro Squats Pro PullUps Pro My conclusion: I think this app seems to do what it advertises and it appears the measurements are sort of accurate. When I started to write this it showed my heart rate as 60, I then did 25 fast PushUps just to see what it would say and it did say 78, but I don't have an actual heart rate monitor where I could do a real comparison. If somebody contacted the developer maybe they would label these 10 unlabelled buttons and make a few improvements. I think I may have gotten this for free when it was advertised in the App a Day app, but I must say I haven't used it much. I did keep it on my phone for now, but I think if you were really serious about fitness and accurate heart rate measurements getting a heart rate monitor and using an accessible fitness app which I am sure are out there would probably be better. I do also wonder how good it is for the camera lens cover to put a sweaty finger on it all the time, you would probably have to clean it fairly often if you used the app a lot, I guess otherwise it doesn't hurt it because I am sure Apple would not allow such

Lastly you have the “Share It” section: Share Facebook Share Twitter Share Mail That’s it. The Discard button is at the top left. The Save button is at the top right and you have to touch it,if you touch Discard at the top left and swipe right Voiceover will not go to Save, it appears to jump right over it, but it’s easy to find by touching the screen underneath the battery status. After I used it a few times to write this I was at some point presented with a screen with a Close button at the top which advertised Runtastic’s so-called “Premium” apps: Runtastic Pro Roadbike Pro PushUps Pro SitUps Pro Squats Pro PullUps Pro My conclusion: I think this app seems to do what it advertises and it appears the measurements are sort of accurate. When I started to write this it showed my heart rate as 60, I then did 25 fast PushUps just to see what it would say and it did say 78, but I don’t have an actual heart rate monitor where I could do a real comparison. If somebody contacted the developer maybe they would label these 10 unlabelled buttons and make a few improvements. I think I may have gotten this for free when it was advertised in the App a Day app, but I must say I haven’t used it much. I did keep it on my phone for now, but I think if you were really serious about fitness and accurate heart rate measurements getting a heart rate monitor and using an accessible fitness app which I am sure are out there would probably be better. I do also wonder how good
