RE: Need Accessible App for Apartment Intercom System

2023-08-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
We have a Ring Doorbell and one of their other cameras and it works OK, but
it's also a bit strange when somebody rings the doorbell and you tap on the
notification sound along with Voiceover goes to the earpiece and then it's very
hard to hear and you still have to tap the microphone button before you can
actually speak with the person. I find half the time I'm too slow and by the
time I get thew app open and I'm ready to speak the person who rang the bell
already left. Anyways, it wouldn't be a replacement for a system like you
described where it allows you to unlock the doors and so on.

Thanks to all for letting me know I can’t get screen recognition on my IPhone
8. I don’t think it would solve my problem with the intercom app anyway as the
app won’t work with voice over on. I probably need to get a more current phone
but hate to buy something new when my IPhone 8 is working perfectly well.

Has anyone used the Ring Doorbell system? I’d hate to recommend it only to
have it not work either.

Thanks,

Subject: Need Accessible App for Apartment Intercom System

Hello,

My apartment management recently switched to a new app for use with our
intercom system. With the old app, a person would punch in your apartment
number, your phone would ring, you would answer & see who it was then press 9
to trigger the door to unlock. Apparently this system was quite old & I am
told they could not enter any new numbers into the system. The new app, called
AIPHONE IXG, is not accessible. It only gets a 2 star rating so am not sure
why they chose it. In order to use it, I have to turn voice over off. Luckily
I can see enough to hit the answer phone button. Then I have to tap on 2 more
things then slide a door icon over to trigger the door to unlock. I cannot see
well enough to tap on the 2 places needed to get to the door icon. Does anyone
know of an accessible intercom app I can suggest to management?

Thanks,
Sherry Wells

Hello Sherry:

iOS 14 was when screen recognition was added.

I think that was after the iPhone 8 was introduced.

Good luck with your search.

Have you tried to turn on screen recognition to see if that helps with the app?

You should also tell your apartment management they should put pressure on the
developer to make the app more accessible, you can also contact them yourself,
but it wouldn't hurt if they did as well. Hopefully the developer is receptive
and willing to do this.

As for suggesting another app that really is not possible if you don't know the
system and what works with it. I would request a meeting with whoever is in
charge of this type of stuff from your management company to discuss and
explore options.

I am definitely talking to my apartment management & their IT person.

Meanwhile, I do not have screen recognition turned on. I’m not sure it will
help as it seems I have to have voice over off before the intercom app will
open once I’ve answered the phone. I’d like to try it though. Where can I
find it to turn it on? I looked through accessibility & didn’t find it. I did
a search for screen recognition under settings & it sent me to quick settings
voice over. I didn’t find it there either. I am using an IPhone 8 with
current IOS, 16.6.
