RE: Apple Watch Series 1 Versus Series 2 Models

2016-11-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Daniel,

Which Apple watch do you have? I am also in Canada and recently bought a Series
2 Stainless Steel 38mm watch. It was $699, but I also just ordered a 38mm Sport
model for my wife for Christmas, it is also a series 2 and it is $489. If the
$399 watch is a 38mm Sport model then it is only a $90 difference. For me it
was a no-brainer, I am very active outdoors so the water resistance and the
fact that I can go for a walk and especially run without my phone was
definitely a selling point. I opted for the stainless steel model because it
has a Sapphire crystal screen and I also do tend to bang into things a fair bit
when I'm in my woodworking shop etc. so I wanted the extra toughness. I ordered
the Sport for my wife because it's lighter and she is not as active and much
more careful than me. Also she loves pink so I knew she definitely would pick
the Rose Gold model.

Lastly, if you are looking at additional bands I absolutelly and totally
recommend not to let Apple scam you with them. I think the Apple bands are the
biggest rip-off in the entire Apple Store. To charge $50 Canadian or whatever
it is for an extra rubber or braded nylon band is ridiculous and even more so
is the extra $150 you pay if you upgrade to a Milanese Loop band and if you
bought the watch with the sport band it comes with and then wanted a Milanese
Loop band the price tag here in Canada is $209. A linked bracelet is even more
and some of the leather loop or leather classic buckle bands are just a total
joke. You can buy any of these bands on Amazon for 10 Cents on the Dollar or
less. I ordered a silver and black stainless Milanese Loop band and they were I
think about $15.99 and $16.99, respectively. I was at first concerned they
would not be as good, but I checked out the bands at the Apple Store and when I
received my Milanese Loop bands from Amazon I could not notice any difference.
They are subtle, the magnet is strong and they feel and work great.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hi Pam,

I struggled with the same delimma a couple of months ago. I decided to go for
the Series 1, as for my situation, it was a better fit.

The first item was the price, in Canada, the Series 1 is $399 while the Series
2 is $629, about $130 more.

The second item was the brighter screen, being blind, not really a selling
point.

The third item was the Water Resistance, I know that I don't plan on wearing
the watch while swimming or showering.

And lastly, the built-in GPS. Sure you can take walks with the Series 2 and
don't need to carry your phone, but in my case, my phone is always with me, and
that coupled with the $130 savings (which I put that towards an AppleCare plan,
and with taxes, came about $5 less then the Series 2 watch alone before taxes.

As for performance, the Series 1 has the same processor as the Series 2, and
not haven't played with the Series 2 personally, have heard that they both
perform similarly. David Woodbridge from Vision Australia did a demo of the
original Apple Watch with the Series 2 and although you did notice a very small
difference in performance, with Watch OS 3, both watches performed fairly close.

Now I've had the watch for a little over two months now and I don't regret it
for a second. But like I said, my situation is nothing like others. The best
thing I can suggest is to go to an Apple Store and play around with both to see
for yourself and make a decision based on what works for you and your budget.

As for battery life, I've changed some settings in order to save on battery and
have only enabled certain notifications, the most important ones I want to see,
and have decreased the brighthess all the way down, and for me, I will
typically come home at the end of the day with about 70% to 75%. Now for me, I
use the watch normally, occasionally checking my watch from time to time, but
it will all depend on how you use it.

Hope this helps!

After researching, it appears that the main differences are that the Series 2

Right. I guess I am trying to understand, with the Series 1, can you run any
of the GPS apps on your watch and access at least some of their functions from
the watch rather than having to pull the phone out to do everything?
