RE: Choosing symbols
When you are in an edit field, double-tap the Numbers button in the lower left corner of the screen to bring up the numbers. Along with the numbers are several of the most often used punctuation and symbols. While the numbers keyboard is active, double-tap the Symbols button in the lower left corner of the screen just below the Letters button. I find these buttons by exploring the screen rather than swiping. I cannot tell you the swipe sequence. Actually, when you activate numbers, you have the 1 through 0 and then some symbols below them; but just above the numbers button is now a symbols button.
