You can leave it, but there is a bigger chance that if you rename a file you
might accidently delete or rename the extension and then the file wouldn't
be recognized by its application any more. If, for example, you accidently
deleted the "f" at the end of a .pdf extension, Adobe would not recognize
that file any more. There is not often any reason why you need to see the
actual extension so its safer to hide them.

Sieghard,
Why would you have to go back and change the Hide extensions? Could you just
leave it so you can read all extension.

Hi Pablo,

I am posting this to the list, but also CC you privately in case you miss
it.

You can download the latest iOS 7 device software file from the following
address:

http://IPSWDownloader.com

The site is called "IPSWDownloader" because the extension of an Apple Device
Software file is .IPSW.

There are 3 combo boxes on that page, just use the "c" quick nav key to jump
to the first one which is for "Device". Here you can pick "iPhone", "iPad",
"iPod Touch" etc. If you want to download iOS 7.1.2 for you riPhone, select
iPhone, then go on to the next box to select your model. If you want the
file for an iPhone 5S from AT&T, then select "5S GSM". If your iPhone is
from Verizon I believe you need the "5S Global" option. Lastly, select the
version of iOS you want to download. Keep in mind that even though you can
download older versions, you can only use the one you have, e.g. if you are
on iOS 7.1.1 you can't download and restore to version iOS 6. Once you are
done making those 3 selections, find where it says " Download Firmware 7.1.2
(11D257) for iPhone 5S (GSM" which is a bit further down and which is also
read as a heading level 4 and not as a link or a button. I found that in
Internet Explorer 11 I had to rout e the Jaws to the PC cursor and then do a
left click on that in order to start the download since enter didn't seem to
work. In any case, once I did that I was asked if I wanted to "Open" or
"Save" the file, definitely you need to save it.

The .IPSW file which you are saving is a large file (about 1.43 Gb in the
case of iOS 7.1.2) which contains everything you need. Now read the next few
comments/steps carefully because otherwise you won't get anywhere:

1. If you use Windows, the file will show up as a compressed file with a
.zip extension. Do not under any circumstances extract the archive!

2. If you have set your Folder Preferences to "Hide Extensions from known
File Types", turn this off by going to the ffolder where you saved the file,
then click on the "Tools" menu and on "Folder Options". Do A Control+Tab to
go to the "View" tab. Tab twice to get into the treeview and towards the
bottom find where it says "Hide Extensions for known file types, On" and
turn it off by pressing the spacebar. Now tab to OK and activate it. I can
get there quickly by pressing page down once I'm in the treeview, then
pressing the down arrow just once puts me in the right place.

3. Now you will see the full file name with the extension and it should be
like this:

iPhone6,1_7.1.2_11D257_Restore.zip

4. Delete the "zip" extension and change it to "IPSW". The file name should
read like this:

iPhone6,1_7.1.2_11D257_Restore.ipsw

Once you do and press enter, you get the following warning:

Rename
If you change a file name extension, the file might become unusable.
Are you sure you want to change it?
Yes No

Activate the "Yes" button.

5. Go back to "Tools" and "Folder Options", press Control+Tab, then tab
twice to get into the treeview, go back to "Hide extensions for known file
types" and turn it back on, tab to OK and activate it.

6. If you now review the file including the size and file type, Windows
should say it is a "Apple Device Software Update File".

7. Now if you had to do a restore, you would connect your phone to iTunes,
go to the device section and tab to the Restore button. Instead of
activating it simply by pressing the spacebar or enter, you would hold the
shift key and then press enter. This will open a standard Windows open file
dialogue. Simply browse to the .IPSW file (I would make sure it's downloaded
to your local hard drive and that it is not on a USB stick or external
drive) and after selecting the file press enter on the "Open" button. From
here on the restore proceeds normally.

Of course if you have more than one device, e.g. you have an iPhone 5S and
an iPad Mini, you would have to download the appropriate IPSW file for each
device.

Regards,
Sieghard

I have a question. If I don't want to update my iPhone 5s, to IOs8, even
though, I need to do a restore urgent. How can I reinstall IOs 7, and do not
download the IOs8?
Thanks

Yes, and it is really a bad idea to try and upgrade on the 17th as soon as
iOS 8 shows up as an update. All of you who tried to listen to the live
stream today, what was your experience? It was anything but good and
upgrading as part of the first rush will probably be the same and you are
asking for problems. I would wait at least 3 or 4 days if you want a smooth
and problem free experience and don't forget to make a backup before, then
force quit all apps and at least shut down your phone and restart it, even
better do a reset all network settings which will also reboot the phone,
then sign back in to your WiFi and then attempt the upgrade.
I guaranty next Wednesday there will be a lot of posts, many from people who
say the upgrade worked fine and a few who will have problems with the update
not completing or the device going silent and maybe not coming back. Another
really good idea is to do the upgrade via iTunes, you will get much more
feedback and won't have to deal with the unnerving situation of your phone
going silent for maybe an hour or more.

You heard correctly. Also! I beg everyone who has a problem with bugs to
wait rather than installing the update and spending a lot of time
criticizing Apple for such a bad update.
