TomTom also has such an app although I would say most people on the list use Navigon or Motion X GPS. Sendero is also working on developing what one would believe is a Trekker like app for the iPhone, the project is funded by Seeing Eye so I think money isn't a problem and with Sendero's expertise I would expect such an app to be fairly promising. Of course nobody knows what it will cost, my guess is it could be anywhere from $50 to $150. $50 to $80 would put it around what navigon costs or a bit higher, $100 or above would be expensive for an app, but if it really offered a Trekker like experience on a stabil platform like the iPhone I would have no problems spending the money, it's still a lot cheaper than the $800 one has to put on the table for a Breeze, when I bought my Trekker Maestro in November 2007 it was $2,000, what a joke, but back then we didn't know better and the accessible iPhone hadn't happened yet, in fact, the iPhone only had just happened. For more information I suggest you either search the archives to read up about what's been discussed on the list already, you can also go to www.Applevis.com where you find some good reviews and I also recommend the Ariadne website at www.AriadneGPS.eu where you find a nice 6-part series of Podcasts about Ariadne. I like MapQuest by AoL, but I haven't compared it to any other GPS app. I tried it because it was free, and other than the fact that it requires a data plan and doesn't announce streets as I pass them, like Ariadme GPS, I don't find it wanting. In researching GPS apps myself, I * seaRched through the list archive and read what others have said in the recent past, * read through the navigation section (I think that's what it was called.) on the applevis.com site and * started by checking out the free apps. Re: GPS applications that work well with voice over
Hello Marissa. You will probably get a lot of different varying answers on this. This topic is brought up quite often and many people have many different apps they recommend. I personally like Ariadne GPS the best. Right now, I think it is the best wanted to tell you immediate information such as where you are, what direction you're going in, and alerting you to when you arrive at a certain favorite which you have previously added. However Ariadne GPS does not give you walking or driving directions. For that, I would recommend Navigon. It is a very well thought out app, even though it is kind of expensive and not specifically geared toward voiceover users. Some people will really like Navigon a lot, others will like tom-tom. And still others might like motion X GPS Drive. I have not personally tried tom-tom, however I have been trying out motion X GPS Drive. I do not care as much for the user interface of that program, but it seems to do okay. So my two favorite GPS apps I would have to say are Ariadne and Navigon. In fact, you can load Navigon and have it route you to an address whether it is by walking or by driving. Then you can load Ariadne to get immediate information about where you are. The two will work simultaneously. Good luck in your search for the right gps app. --- Raul A. Re: GPS applications that work well with voice over
As I said, I like MapQuest, but I've only compared it to other free iPhone apps, like AroundMe, Where and YellowPages. I have no experience with any GPS systems developed specifically for the blind. I haven't used MapQuest a lot, but I did use it when we were vacationing recently in Seattle, and it was fairly easy to use and very helpful. I like that you can enter a business name or an address. When you enter a location that's pretty close, it'll ask you if you want walking directions or driving directions. You can move it to the background, and you'll still hear the turn by turn directions. The nice thing is that it's free, so you can try it out, and if you don't like it, you've only wasted the time you spent giving it a whirl. Recently I did try to use it to get directions to a pretty popular destination here in Austin, and I couldn't get it to list the particular location we wanted to get to. I'm hoping this was user error or just a one time issue. BTW, we had a pretty good idea where we were going, and we did find the location without too much trouble. Re: GPS applications that work well with voice over
Hi, yes this is a consideration, but the town you are in doesn't matter as long as you are in the cell carrier coverage area. Most of the ones in the U.S. have coverage in 95% of the country. Going to other countries is an entire different story though. -- Raul A. --- Raul A.
