I use an free app called A2Z Contacts that allows you to set up groups for 
either texting or emailing.
That way you do not have to use the same conversation to send your next text 
message.
Note the name of the app uses the digit 2 not the word two.

Unless things have changed, it used to work that - if you once sent one gang 
message, it forms a thread of it's own, so you can use 
messages in said thread, to inherit the gang of recipients for a new message.

Personally, I go to iCloud.com and create contact groups that I can use in 
various iOS tasks such as group texting, emailing, do not disturb, etc.  

However, Richard and others have recommended the following free Contacts 
manager that allows one to create contact groups from within iOS:

Hi Donald,

Once you've created a group in this way, all the messages between you and 
others in the group will be gathered in a conversation. You can send other 
messages to the group by replying to that conversation.
