Re: Looking for a wind speed measuring app

2012-10-27 Thread Marcy Weinberg
Does the Weather Underground app give you current conditions, usually updated
once an hour?

On the weather underground website, I put in my zip code, and when the page for
my town came up, I bookmarked it and put the bookmark on my home screen. Every
time I go in, there is a table with current conditions, including the wind
speed and direction.

Hope this helps!

Weather Underground question (Was RE: Looking for a wind speed measuring app)

2012-10-27 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
My Weather Underground speaks the temp, then announces the next 3 days (e.g.
Sat Sun Mon), then the risk of precipitation.

My sighted wife tells me that after the temp, Wind and Humidity are listed but
not spoken by VO, and that forecasted temps for Sat Sun Mon are listed before
the risk of precipitation.

In other words, at least on my app, Wind and Humidity information is not spoken
by VO, nor are the predicted Hi / Lo temps for the next 3 days.

I've checked in my app settings and can't find anything that sounds like
there's anything I can change in my settings.

Are you getting VO to announce the things I can't get mine to announce? If so,
do you have ideas what I may be able to do to fix this? I'm running app v 2.0.

I've been using MenuWeather to get the Wind, Humidity, and other info.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Keith and all,
When you open the Weather Underground app, touch in the upper left corner.
You should find a button that says UI toolbar home city.
Start flicking to the right with one finger.
You should hear your home city, then UI Toolbar Station, the next number you
hear is the current temp, then you will hear feels like and a number, then
you will hear Wind and a number.
If you do a three finger swipe from right to left like you would do to go
from page to page of apps, you will find the next few days information in
the same three or four column table.
At the bottom of the screen, the second tab is for the hourly forecast.
Double tap on that.
Then, you will have each hour on a separate line down the screen, for
example, for today in Portland Oregon,
I hear 9 AM, 53, 8, 80 percent
If you search around you can find the column headings for those numbers:

Hour, Conditions, Wind, Percip.

I hope that helps,

2012-10-27 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Thanks, Richard. Mine wasn't working that way, as I described in my first

It's still not working for me as you describe.

From the top left it works as you describe for the first few elements.

Then, it announces the temp, doesn't announce the Feels Like, Wind, Humidity.

It then announces Sat Sun Mon. it doesn't announce Hi / Lo temps for Sat Sun
Mon that are n the screen (again, as my sighted wife tells me), but then does
announce the next line of % precipitation risk for Sat Sun Mon.

Also, a three finger swipe left / right doesn't do anything.

The tabs along the bottom are as you describe.

Why is the behavior of this app for me so different from yours, especially
after an uninstall and reinstall?

I'm stumped. Any ideas appreciated.

Even with my sighted wife telling me where to go, I can't get the Feels Like,

How do I activate Vertical Navigation? I'll give that a try.

Richard,

I've tried 'em all, i.e. 2 finger upswipe to have VO read each element,
manual right swipe, finger drag.

Even with my sighted wife telling me where to go, I can't get the Feels
Like, Wind, Himidity or Hi / lo temps to announce. E.g there's just a click
sound between Sat and % precip when dragging vertically.

How do I activate Vertical Navigation? I'll give that a try.

Are you a Paid Member? I'm not. Wondering if that could be a difference.
Don't want to pay just to try to get it active, but if you're a paid member,
maybe that's a difference.

Thanks for your help. I'd like to use the app, but I need full access to to
want to use it.

Keith

Keith,

How are you getting around on the screen?

If you are sliding your finger it is easy to miss things.

But, if you find where it says Sat and slide your finger straight down, just
before you get the percip percentage the high and low temps are given.

another way to get there is turn the rotor to Vertical Navigation.

then, when you touch Sat, flick down and you will hear the high-low and
another flick down gives you the percentage of precipitation.

HTH,

Richard

Thanks, Richard. Mine wasn't working that way, as I described in my first
email. After you're email, I uninstalled and reinstalled Weather
Underground. It's still not working for me as you describe.

From the top left it works as you describe for the first few elements.

Then, it announces the temp, doesn't announce the Feels Like, Wind,
Humidity.

It then announces Sat Sun Mon. it doesn't announce Hi / Lo temps for Sat Sun
Mon that are n the screen (again, as my sighted wife tells me), but then
does announce the next line of % precipitation risk for Sat Sun Mon.

Also, a three finger swipe left / right doesn't do anything.

The tabs along the bottom are as you describe.

Why is the behavior of this app for me so different from yours, especially
after an uninstall and reinstall?

I'm stumped. Any ideas appreciated.

Richard

If you check the bottom

Sieghard,

THanks for sharing this information and I will be very interested in hearing
more. I find most the weather data pretty useful, but I think the more stations
available, the more data that can be gathered and with weather you can never
have enough data. The fact they are responsive is really great. Oh and the
price of the hardware is pretty reasonable.

Hi,
Weather Underground does give the wind speed.
When you flick right from the Station button, you will hear the temp, then
feels like and the next item is wind speed.
The nice thing with Weather Underground is you can usually find a station
fairly close to you, so the wind speed should be reasonably accurate.

Subject: Looking for a wind speed measuring app

Hello list,

So I'm in search of an accessible app that can measure wind speed. I live in
Southern California and it looks like we're about to get blasted with some
Santa Ana winds these next few days. I currently only have the native iPhone
app, another app that just measures humitidy and Weather Underground on my
phone. I use Weather Underground as my main weather app and all in all, I am
quite satisfied with it. The one thing it doesn't have however, or at least
I haven't come across it while poking around the app is any sort of wind
speed indicator or measurement tool.

Can anyone recommend a app that will in fact do this? I'd of course prefer a
free option, but I'd even pay one or two bucks for it if need be. I just
don't want to go paying for something to find out it pretty much sucks with
Voiceover.

Thanks,
