I talked to Apple help & they told me that you just have to type in new names & 
phone numbers to add them to a group.  There’s not much of a point in doing 
this however as you cannot send a message to a group using the message app.  I 
just had to manually create a message with all the names in it & send.  Another 
reason to never clean out ones message app…  I will definitely keep this 
message there for future use.  Meanwhile Apple would do well to create a way to 
create a group & be able to send messages to that group.

You should be able to select names in your contacts folder, control-C to copy, 
navigate to groups folder and paste with control-V.

I’d like to do whatever is fastest as we have someone in the hospital & I’d 
like to be able to send out a group message with updates.  

 

Any help is appreciated!

That person gave you directions if you were on Windows.
Copy and paste with a bluetooth keyboard on Apple devices use command plus the 
letters; but that won't help in this case.
That is why an app like ABC Groups is so useful.
