There has been some discussion of recording with the iPhone during live
performances for personal use.

I’ve put up an example on my web site of the possible results for those who
just cannot help themselves…

Here is the paragraph from my site and if you are using HTML messages, the
link should play the sample.

Recording live music with the iPhone 13 pro
  Confession time.
I am putting up a sample of a recording I made recently of 6 cellist playing
in an Atrium, which had a ceiling that was almost 3 stories tall. It was a
large room and we were sitting in folding chairs a little more than half of the
way from front-to-back and close to the middle side-to-side. If full the way
they had the seats arranged with some space between, it probably would seat 150
to 200 people, more in non-Covid times.

My iPhone is the 13 Pro and I carry it in a shoulder bag.
I didn't want to try and hold it during the concert so I started recording
with the app, Just Press Record, and dropped it in my carrier. So, one end is
sticking down into the small bag so the microphone is pointing at the floor,
through the material of the bag. The other end is pointing toward the ceiling
with the flap that normally covers it pulled back to give it open access to the
room.

  * Nothing in the program nor nothing said from the stage forbad recording. I
know, I know; probably since they record their own programs for their own
subscription service they probably don't' want people like me recording.
However, it was not explicitly stated and I just did this for myself out of
curiosity.

Here is a sample of the 6 cellists of the 45TH Parallel Universe playing the
Hallelujah Chorus from the Messiah.

RE: Recording live music with the iPhone

2021-12-21 Thread Simon A Fogarty
I’m sure Malcolm said his phone was camera end into the bag,
And if so then even better but I will go with the microphone is at the charging
end as well.

That recording was to good to be the other way around.

The reason it sounded so good is because the bottom mic isn't used for stereo
recording. The iPhone uses the two mics near the camera. One of the mics is
around the ear peace speaker and the other is on the back near the back camera.
I really wish they would use the bottom mic as well to give better stereo
separation.

2021-12-21 Thread Richard Turner
I'm not sure where you get that information; but the end with the camera was in
the bottom of the bag.
The charging port end was open to the room.
I did a recording with my iPhone charging port end pointed at me; and the end
with the camera pointed at my Echo Show 5 with Jaws speaking out of it; and it
was perfect stereo with me on one side and Jaws on the other.

maybe worth a shot.

Hey that's pretty good from a phone in a bag,

I wonder how it would come through if using just press record from the apple
watch?

I've got JPR as a complication on my watch face,

So I record things if I need to in a hurry,

And they save to the cloud

But yeah what the watch recording would be like is of interest.

know, I know; probably since they record their own programs for their own

However, it was not explicitly stated and I just did this for myself out of
curiosity.

RE: Recording live music with the iPhone

2021-12-21 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hey that’s pretty good from a phone in a bag,

I wonder how it would come through if using just press record from the apple
watch?

I’ve got JPR as a complication on my watch face,

So I record things if I need to in a hurry,

And they save to the cloud

But yeah what the watch recording would be like is of interest.

There has been some discussion of recording with the iPhone during live
performances for personal use.

I’ve put up an example on my web site of the possible results for those who
just cannot help themselves…

Here is the paragraph from my site and if you are using HTML messages, the link
should play the sample.

Recording live music with the iPhone 13 pro

Confession time.
I am putting up a sample of a recording I made recently of 6 cellist playing in
an Atrium, which had a ceiling that was almost 3 stories tall. It was a large
room and we were sitting in folding chairs a little more than half of the way
from front-to-back and close to the middle side-to-side. If full the way they
had the seats arranged with some space between, it probably would seat 150 to
200 people, more in non-Covid times.

My iPhone is the 13 Pro and I carry it in a shoulder bag.
I didn't want to try and hold it during the concert so I started recording with
the app, Just Press Record, and dropped it in my carrier. So, one end is
sticking down into the small bag so the microphone is pointing at the floor,
through the material of the bag. The other end is pointing toward the ceiling
with the flap that normally covers it pulled back to give it open access to the
room.
