Re: When It Comes to iPhone, Are You All Thumbs?

2023-01-19 Thread Michael Irons
Hello everyone, when it comes to the iPhone, I am all thumbs, and, all fingers.
To really get things right I need a good Bluetooth QWERTY keyboard. The only
kind of screen input I can do is the keypad on the phone in dialing numbers.
When it comes to dictation it it gets it all wrong when it really matters.
Dictation continuously gets it all wrong no matter how hard I’ve tried or how
hard I have practice!

Subject: When It Comes to iPhone, Are You All Thumbs?

 Hello All,

A friend of mine and I got into a discussion about how we type in
 iOS, when sending text messages.

It started when she asked me if I use my thumbs to type. Even
though I know that a great many people use their thumbs to enter
text on iPhone, personally I find the technique slow and awkward.

How do I enter text in iOS?

First, I keep my VoiceOver typing mode set to "Touch Typing."

Second, I use a folio case. Not only does such a case cover the
display when not in use, it also provides a nifty way to balance the
 phone in one hand, fingers-free.

When entering text, I open the case, kind of like a book, with the
wallet side to the left and the phone to the right. I position the
phone case in the crook of my left hand (where the base of my thumb
meets my hand) so that the back of the phone, in the case of course,
is resting against the palm of my left hand, leaving all five digits
 on my left hand, free.

The wallet side of the case acts as a kind of counter balance so
that the phone does not slip out of my hand, even when the phone is
 tilted, off-axis, so to speak.

I use my left thumb to access the letters and numbers, located on
the left side of the onscreen keyboard and the index finger of my
right hand, to access the letters and numbers located on the right
 side of the onscreen keyboard.

 I hold the phone in the exact same way when using Slide-to-Type;
except in that instance, I use my right index finger, only.

Okay, that's my method for entering text on iPhone.

How about you? What technique do you use to enter text in iOS?

When it come to iPhone, are you all thumbs? (smile).

 Mark

I could never figure out how to do the split tap thing. Before I got
my Hable One, I used my wright index finger to type. I was never very
fast when I did it, but I could do it.

RE: When It Comes to iPhone, Are You All Thumbs?

2023-01-18 Thread Christopher Chaltain
For me, the reason I like using my thumbs is that since the phone is anchored
to both palms, my thumbs are always in the same position relative to the
phone's screen. It's easier for me to keep my thumbs oriented to the screen. If
I'm holding the phone in one hand, my pointer finger can sometimes wonder a
bit. I still use my pointer finger to navigate around the screen, so I do
sometimes lose some time readjusting my phone to go from typing to exploring.
Again, this is the method I've settled on, and I'm sharing it in case it helps
someone else, but I'm in no means implying that this is the best way to type.
The best way to type is whatever works for someone.

I tried using my thumbs to enter text on my phone & found it to be unnatural
feeling. I have been an iPhone user since 2009 & have always held my phone in
my left hand while typing with my right pointer finger. Or maybe it doesn't
seem comfortable or natural because I don't adapt to change very well.

right index finger; never occurred to me to use my thumbs. when I heard of
people doing this, didn’t occur to me to switch. I’m not interested in doing
something just because that’s the way sighted people do it.

Tom. I highly recommend that you get the Hable One braille bluetooth keyboard.
The Hable when you type on the keyboard is based off of braille screen input.
However, you can type on actual buttons, and not the phone keyboard itself.
Good luck.

2023-01-18 Thread Paula Jordan
Hi all. Interesting thread. When using the onscreen keyboard I primarily use my
right index finger. I also use M Braille or dictation. I make myself use the
onscreen keyboard for short messages just to keep in practice.
God bless!

Subject: When It Comes to iPhone, Are You All Thumbs?

Hello All,

A friend of mine and I got into a discussion about how we type in iOS, when
sending text messages.

It started when she asked me if I use my thumbs to type. Even though I know
that a great many people use their thumbs to enter text on iPhone, personally I
find the technique slow and awkward.

How do I enter text in iOS?

First, I keep my VoiceOver typing mode set to "Touch Typing."

Second, I use a folio case. Not only does such a case cover the display when
not in use, it also provides a nifty way to balance the phone in one hand,
fingers-free.

When entering text, I open the case, kind of like a book, with the wallet side
to the left and the phone to the right. I position the phone case in the crook
of my left hand (where the base of my thumb meets my hand) so that the back of
the phone, in the case of course, is resting against the palm of my left hand,
leaving all five digits on my left hand, free.

The wallet side of the case acts as a kind of counter balance so that the phone
does not slip out of my hand, even when the phone is tilted, off-axis, so to
speak.

I use my left thumb to access the letters and numbers, located on the left side
of the onscreen keyboard and the index finger of my right hand, to access the
letters and numbers located on the right side of the onscreen keyboard.

I hold the phone in the exact same way when using Slide-to-Type; except in that
instance, I use my right index finger, only.

Okay, that's my method for entering text on iPhone.

How about you? What technique do you use to enter text in iOS?

When it come to iPhone, are you all thumbs? (smile).

Mark

Re: When It Comes to iPhone, Are You All Thumbs?

2023-01-18 Thread Esther Levegnale
wow, that's pretty neat. I use what is called a split tap. I put one finger on
the letter, then with the next finger I use it to type the letter in. I really
like that method. Sometimes I even dictate, but I try to use the split tap
method just to keep in practice. Esther

Re: When It Comes to iPhone, Are You All Thumbs?

2023-01-18 Thread Kathy Brandt
When I got my first iPod, training wheels for my iPhone, somehow always used
right index finger; never occurred to me to use my thumbs. when I heard of
people doing this, didn’t occur to me to switch. I’m not interested in doing
something just because that’s the way sighted people do it.

Holding the phone in my left hand, I use the 3 fingers (Index, Middle, and
Ring), and depending on what letter I'm typing, the finger: for the A, Q, W, S,
i, I use the Index; for the E, D, F, R, etc., the middle but sometimes the
Index. And for the rest of the letters, I use either the Index or middle
finger. To switch between letters and numbwiths, I use the Index finger. And
for the Enter, I use the Ring finger.

2023-01-18 Thread Barbara Stahl
I have tried using my thumbs to type a couple of times just because I have
heard that lots of people type that way. However, I found it to be extremely
awkward. Whenever possible, I use my M braille app to enter text. Its great
and so much faster than typing on the keyboard. In fact, I used this app to
type out this message. I only use the keyboard when its absolutely necessary.
When I do use it, I use my index fingers. Otherwise, I use the dictation
feature and seri for very short messages.

RE: When It Comes to iPhone, Are You All Thumbs?

2023-01-18 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I do use my thumbs. My sighted children showed me how to do it. I place the
phone so that each bottom corner is in the palm of one of my hands. My fingers
reach around behind the phone to cradle it. I then use my thumbs to type, with
my left thumb reaching the keys on the left and so on.

For longer bouts of typing, I'll use braille screen input, my Orbit Writer or a
Logitech keyboard.

I use my right index finger for most of the typing that I do on the onscreen
keyboard when i do that. I usually use my Hable One or a Bluetooth keyboard to
type my stuff. I also use Braille Screen Input when i am lazy and don’t want to
pull out my Hable One. Have a great day all!

How could I've forgotten about "Braille Screen Input!"! I use this method too
sometimes! It takes practice, though.

Re: When It Comes to iPhone, Are You All Thumbs?

2023-01-18 Thread Gerardo Corripio
Holding the phone in my left hand, I use the 3 fingers (Index, Middle, and
Ring), and depending on what letter I'm typing, the finger: for the A, Q, W, S,
i, I use the Index; for the E, D, F, R, etc., the middle but sometimes the
Index. And for the rest of the letters, I use either the Index or middle
finger. To switch between letters and numbwiths, I use the Index finger. And
for the Enter, I use the Ring finger.

RE: When It Comes to iPhone, Are You All Thumbs?

2023-01-18 Thread CJ & AA MAY
No, nor could I use my thumbs to type. I hold the phone in its case in my left
hand and type with my right index finger. In this way, if I accidentally hit
the adjacent letter, I can just slant my finger over to hit the correct key.

Wow, I couldn’t imagine using my thumbs to type. They’re way too big for those
small letters. I use my pointer finger usually, but also use other fingers if
they’re closing to, say, the delete, L, O, or return keys.

Hello All,

A friend of mine and I got into a discussion about how we type in iOS, when
sending text messages.

It started when she asked me if I use my thumbs to type. Even though I know
that a great many people use their thumbs to enter text on iPhone,
personally I find the technique slow and awkward.

How do I enter text in iOS?

First, I keep my VoiceOver typing mode set to "Touch Typing."

Second, I use a folio case. Not only does such a case cover the display
when not in use, it also provides a nifty way to balance the phone in one
hand, fingers-free.

When entering text, I open the case, kind of like a book, with the wallet
side to the left and the phone to the right. I position the phone case in
the crook of my left hand (where the base of my thumb meets my hand) so that
the back of the phone, in the case of course, is resting against the palm of
my left hand, leaving all five digits on my left hand, free.

The wallet side of the case acts as a kind of counter balance so that the
phone does not slip out of my hand, even when the phone is tilted, off-axis,
so to speak.

I use my left thumb to access the letters and numbers, located on the left
side of the onscreen keyboard and the index finger of my right hand, to
access the letters and numbers located on the right side of the onscreen
keyboard.

I hold the phone in the exact same way when using Slide-to-Type; except in
that instance, I use my right index finger, only.

Okay, that's my method for entering text on iPhone.

How about you? What technique do you use to enter text in iOS?

When it come to iPhone, are you all thumbs? (smile).

Mark

Tom. I highly recommend that you get the Hable One braille bluetooth
keyboard. The Hable when you type on the keyboard is based off of
braille screen input. However, you can type on actual buttons, and
not the phone keyboard itself. Good luck.

Any tips on using the Braile screen input? I tried it before, but it seems I
always have the screen turned the wrong way. No matter what I do, it seems

Re: When It Comes to iPhone, Are You All Thumbs?

2023-01-18 Thread Devin Prater
Wow, I couldn’t imagine using my thumbs to type. They’re way too big for those
small letters. I use my pointer finger usually, but also use other fingers if
they’re closing to, say, the delete, L, O, or return keys.

I use braille screen input. I can type on the regular keyboard, but I am very
slow. So, if it is more than a very few words, it is braille screen input.
Ocasionally, I use dictation if I am in a quiet environment. I almost never

(smile).

Mark
