Below is the only relevant forum post I could find right away, lots of folks
on both Windows  Mac platforms seem to be having this trouble.

Smip:
When I started I had the Sync with this IPhone over Wi-Fi box ... Allowed
TCP ports 123  3689, UDP 123  5353, started working!

Syncing over WiFi generally works for me, but it can definitely be a bit
flaky and it's also slow. I know this may not help you much. One thing you
have to check is that you have enabled syncing over WiFi in iTunes and I
believe you may have to hook up your phone by cable, make sure it's enabled
and do a tethered sync first. Of course the problem could also be that I am
using a PC with Windows 7 and you are using an inferior computer *smile*.

hi,

personally, I havem't that problem with ny iphone4s, but with my ipad2.
rebooting the ipad and relaunching itunes or sometimes even rebooting my imac 
will do the trick.
but this make no sence... maybe something weird happens with bonjour at least I 
Assume bonjour is used to find each other.
this problem cames up since ios5.1.1
