Re: A couple of apps that are fully VO compliant

2013-03-04 Thread Keith Watson
James,

Actually it's fully accessible and does exactly what it claims to do. The only
information it gives is the current temp and the high for the next five days.
It's a minimal app. No clutter. You want more info go use weather bug or some
other app that goes in depth. You want minimalist then Conditions is for you.

RE: A couple of apps that are fully VO compliant

2013-03-04 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi,

In that case, I may have the right app. I thought I had the wrong one
because its not accessible and I was told it was. I guess yu could slide
your finger down to the row of days and then slide down to the temperature
but if you don't slide down perfectly straight, there is no way to find out
if you are on the right temperature for that day. It only gives the maximum
and not the minimum.

Not absolutely sure but, if I have the right app, its not even worth the
dollar to me. I'm waiting for an answer on the name of the developer to see
if for sure I have the right app.

Keith's original comments for the two apps that he recommended (VO
Calendar and Conditions).

• VO Calendar ($9.99) by Devista B.V.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vo-calendar/id508386832?mt=8
The first is called VO Calendar. Its a calendar app that is written
specifically for blind users. Sort of high priced but worth it in my
opinion. Anything that saves me time and aggravation is worth $10 in
my
book. Give it a look see.

Developer's description:
begin quote
Do you use VoiceOver on your iPhone because of blindness or because
you’re partially sighted? VO Calendar then is the calendar app of your
choice.

VO Calendar is a weekly calendar specifically designed to be used
(only!) with VoiceOver.

The result of this VoiceOver-only design is not only a smoother
navigation through the app. It also makes it possible for the
VoiceOver speech to give smart summaries depending on the context.
This prevents you from having to go through each event individually.

Existing events are automatically synchronized. If you prefer not to
type, you can record voice memos instead.

You can use VO Calendar with the VoiceOver gestures you are used to.

However, there is an even faster way. With the screen being split into
two halves you can scan the right half of the screen with your right
thumb. A single tap with your left thumb then is enough to activate
the concerning function. After getting used to you will find out this
helps you to browse through your calendar even quicker.
end quote

• Conditions — Beautiful Weather Info on the Go! ($0.99) by Rubber
Duck Software
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/conditions-beautiful-weather/id543298335?mt=8

The second app is called Conditions. It's a very simple weather app that
is also fully VO compatible. It's 99 cents and worth throwing a buck
at the
programmer just because he included VO in his thoughts while writing
this
app. Heard him on a podcast giving Marco Armant the credit for turning
him
on to VO.

Developer's description:
begin quote

Conditions for iOS makes checking the weather on the go simple, fun
and beautiful.

Many weather apps clutter their interface and overload their users
with tons of details that aren't all that useful.

Conditions only shows you the most important information about what
it's like outside right now, wherever you are, anywhere in the world.

=== 5 Day Forecast ===

Conditions displays a simple, 5 day forecast indicating what it's
going to be like outside each day, including the temperature.

=== Simply simpler ===

You can easily tap anywhere on the face of Conditions to toggle it
into an even simpler more, showing only what it's like outside right
now.

=== Day  Night ===

Conditions knows when it's dark outside and will automatically adjust
it's look and feel to match the time of day.
end quote

HTH. By the way, I read an interesting review about the Conditions
weather app that stated it was a beautifully minimalist and accurate
weather app -- unless users were using a pirated version. Here's the
followup description of what happens then. That is, unless you
download it illegally. Then it actually becomes quite inaccurate,
displaying a picture of a pirate head and a weather forecast of
‘ARRmageddon 666 degrees’ with daily fire and brimstone showers.
Every day.

Thanks, Keith, for the recommendations.

Cheers,

Esther

RE: A couple of apps that are fully VO compliant

2013-03-03 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi Keith,

I'm doing well with the VO calendar. I have one question so far.
How do you stop recording or do you have to let it run. I can't seem to
stop it with a double tap when I'm finished my vocal note. Seems like a
waste of space.

Please help

Re: A couple of apps that are fully VO compliant

2013-03-03 Thread James Mannion
I found conditions not to be completely accessible actually. I can see
enough to know there are graphics that show what it is going to be
like each day and voiceover says nothing about these graphics. It does
not even tell you graphics are there. So I don't even think you could
label all of the possibilities since it doesn't tell you they are
there. So it is too minimal for me and I like more details, not less
anyway. JMO. I guess this developer seems to think giving details in a
weather app is not desired.

There are like a million apps in the App Store, so of course there's a
lot of redundancy. I think the better question is how blind people find
this useful and then each person can decide if it's truly redundant for
them or not.

Re: A couple of apps that are fully VO compliant

2013-03-02 Thread Keith Watson
Krister,

I agree, sort of. Yes the built in Calendar app is accessible. But no it does
not have a week view. It only has list, day and month. And when in month it
only tells you that you have something scheduled on a particular day, not what
is scheduled.

I like the VO Calendar app as I can get a lot of data about my week very
quickly. By just running my thumb down the screen I can hear all the
appointments that I have scheduled for that week. Do I not like the higher
price of the app? Sure I don't. Again it's one of these blind specific apps
that only have a niche with our kind. The reason I chose to buy this one was
because of the amount of time I will save with it. I consider it to be worth
the return on investment by the time it will save me not having to spend
working through the regular calendar app. Time is money after all.

perfectly working calendar with different views, month, week, day and even
list views? To me this sounds like an app that falls into the category of
unnecessary reinventions of the wheel specially made for the blind.

 HI,

I have not seen any chatter about these apps on the list so I thought I
would mention them. Forgive me if they have been talked about and I missed
 the threads.

The first is called VO Calendar. Its a calendar app that is written
specifically for blind users. Sort of high priced but worth it in my
opinion. Anything that saves me time and aggravation is worth $10 in my
book. Give it a look see.

The second app is called Conditions. It's a very simple weather app that is
also fully VO compatible. It's 99 cents and worth throwing a buck at the
programmer just because he included VO in his thoughts while writing this
app. Heard him on a podcast giving Marco Armant the credit for turning him
 on to VO.

 Have fun,

Re: A couple of apps that are fully VO compliant

2013-03-02 Thread Brett
Hi,
I agree with Keith on this one. I have purchased the app and am happy with my
purchase. It's not an app you absolutely need, as the inbuilt calendar is fully
accessible. However, the efficiency that this app provides is well worth it in
my opinion. If you rely on the calendar a lot, as I do for work then this app
is probably worth it. It's much faster to enter appointments and to get your
weekly overview. The less time I spend fiddling with the phone, the more time I
have to do what I am actually being paid for. :-)

 Krister,

I agree, sort of. Yes the built in Calendar app is accessible. But no it does
not have a week view. It only has list, day and month. And when in month it
only tells you that you have something scheduled on a particular day, not
 what is scheduled.

Hi Keith,
Thanks for pointing out these apps. I had not heard of either of them
before you mentioned them. I am sure I will go get the conditions app.
I would consider the other one.
