Re: A question about which braille display to buy.

2019-10-06 Thread Richard Turner
APH sells the Orbit primarily to educational systems who get money through the
Department of Education so they seem to charge $100 more than Orbit Research.
So, if you decide to buy an Orbit, I'd buy it from Orbit Research.

I have an Orbit Reader but have had nothing but issues on and off since I've
gotten it. I've had to send it back numerous times for repairs and if I
have to send it back again it will be the 4 or 5 time sending it back. Most
of the repairs have been for pin issues. This time I'm getting lots of
jibberish and only one side of my display goes down and the other half stays
in the up position. This started happening while I was reading a book. Back
in late June I bought myself a Focus 14 fifth generation and have not had
any problems with it at all since I've gotten it. It's more expensive but
worth the bucks I spent and is more stable.

Re: A question about which braille display to buy.

2019-10-06 Thread Richard Turner
No.
If you want to read a file on the SD card, it has to be a braille file.
Connecting to an iPhone or computer, the grade of braille is determined by your
device's screen reader.
I have my iPhone set to use UEB contracted, so that is what I get on the
display, any display.
I just wanted to make sure people know that if they put a word document on the
SD card, it won't work.
But, as a bluetooth display, again the braille is controlled by the screen
reader.
HTH,

2019-10-06 Thread kelby carlson
Richard,

Do you mean it is unable to read in grade 2 even when connected to the iPhone?
And can you only use it via USB with a computer? It's inexpensive but that
alone makes it not as useable to me. I know that there is at least one other
inexpensive Braille display like that around.

Re: A question about which braille display to buy.

2019-10-06 Thread Richard Turner
i have one and love it.
I do not mind no routing keys.
It is very basic.
Meaning, you have to convert files to BRF or BRL before putting them on the SD
card or you will not be able to read them.
It has no translation software.
But, the dots feel better on it than any other display I have used, which is
most of them.
It works great with the iPhone or with computers via USB.
Some people have had issues with dots sticking, but I do not think any more
than other displays and the cost is so much less, and cost for repairs are so
much less, I'm not worried about that.
I've had mine almost a year and had no issues.
He is sweet what I'm thinking about

RE: A question about which braille display to buy.

2019-10-06 Thread 'jan howells' via VIPhone

Hi Karl,

Thank you very much for the offer. I always wanted one of those,
but I could never afford one. I will most likely eventually look
for the BrailleMe which has the cursor routing buttons. I am
just waiting to make sure that they get all of the bugs out and
for updates that are requested. I do have a U2 Mini, which I
absolutely love. It is nice and quiet, and nice and small. I
just need an Executive Products case for it. I love those cases.
I also have a BrailleNote Apex. It ii from 2006. The display is
wonderful, but it is slow and acts up a bot. Every time I unplug
it, I have to reboot it, because it freezes. Every time that I
plug it in, I also have to reboot it, because it freezes. Thank
you anyway. Have a nice day.

Re: A question about which braille display to buy.

2019-10-05 Thread Richard Turner
I do not think they sell it. And unless you find that they have a used one that
they have checked out, I wouldn't buy a used unit, but they are just a couple
hundred less than the QBraille.
The QBraille is supposed to have a firmware update that may make it better.
The vendor my office deals with told me yesterday that he should be able to
loan us one for a few days before the end of the year.

2019-10-05 Thread karl Smith
Hi Jan,

I'm not Richard but the Braille Edge is $2,495.00 if Hims still have any to
sell. If you are interested I have a Humanware Brailliant 40 which is my dealer
demo unit which has been lightly used for $1,100.00 including an Executive
Products leather case and shipping in the U.S.

Re: A question about which braille display to buy.

2019-10-05 Thread Richard Turner
The QBraille is written as one word, no hyphen, unless you use the grade one
indicator.
It is made by HIMS, and is around $3000.
As much as I like the Braille Edge, which was the one before the QBraille; I do
not like the QBraille because the way they have you try to switch between
bluetooth devices is quite unreliable.
For a tiny bit less, I'd go with the Focus 40 5th Generation, even though its
Scratch Pad is probably less of a notepad than the QBraille′
Its easier to switch bluetooth devices.
That's my 2¢ worth.

Re: A question about which braille display to buy.

2019-10-05 Thread audrey joy
Hi Annie,

I'm Audrey Joy in NYC.
Our regional library has a few BrailleMe's. I borrowed one to play with.

It has cursor-routing keys, and it pairs with the Ios, Voiceover for Mac, NVDA
(not Jaws) and it has an SAID card where you can store files and
folders/notetaker.

I didn't like using it; it's noisy when it refreshes and the keyboard is
uncomfortable to use.

I recommend it for a person who hasn't been spoiled by anything else.

I use the HIMS BrailleSense U2 and the U2 Mini. My Focus40 died.

I will be purchasing a QBraille very shortly.

You may contact me at
audjoymu...@gmail.com
for more details.

2019-09-27 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi.

Thank you very much.

I see mixed experiences with QBraille, I hope I can get my hands on one to test
it.

Why is it not possible to buy a great 20 or 24 cells display that really work?

Has anyone any experience with brailleMe. I know it is cheap, and not the
quality we are used to, but it is 20 cells. Does it pair and work with the
phone.

Best Annie.

Re: A question about which braille display to buy.

2019-09-26 Thread Richard Turner

It is very well made, much better than the previous versions.
On the other hand, the Qbraille has great potential with all the Windows Keys,
but my experience with it is not great.
If they have improved its connections to bluetooth in the last 3 or 4 months,
it could be very good.
But as of May, it was not good at all via bluetooth.
Using the USB connection with the computer and Jaws, it was very good.
If you use Jaws, the Focus should just work.
The QBraille will need a driver.

Hi all.

I need a new braille display.

It is really not easy what are people suggesting.

I need the display for my phone, but also for my computer.

I am considering a focus 40 a QBraille or something smaller.

What would you suggest. 14 cells are very small to me but 40 cells display are
very long.

I have also thought about a braille note touch Plus.

Orbit reader has no cursor routing buttons and that would be a problem for me.

Re: A question about which braille display to buy.

2019-09-26 Thread Eden
Hi Annie,
I would recommend a qbraille. I found the Focus unpaired rather frequently from
my iphone. I've had the qbraille for almost a year and x it pairsseamlessly and
even if it loses connection, it connects back without help from you. It also
works well with the computer and there's not bizarre quirky commands to
remember. The keys also feel more solid. Focus keys feel like they are caving
in. The commands on the qbraille use the same ones as a qwerty keyboard, and
it's easy to know where the right buttons are because they are like a qwerty
fitted around the braille keyboard.
