I’m not a fan of Kim Komando myself, and I agree that a lot of people, myself 
included,  will trade a lot of privacy for convenience, but I don’t agree with 
the apparent sentiment that if Facebook collects all of this information then 
Apple gets a free pass. Not everyone uses Facebook or some of these other 
services that are mentioned, and even if they do, they still should be able to 
know who is suing their data and for what. The worst privacy offender shouldn’t 
set the bar for everyone else.

I agree, also remember Apple doesn't sponsor Kim. I am sometimes very leery of 
taking any computer advice from a syndicated radio program I've been radio for 
over 40 years and I know how radio works, like anything else, it's all about

Most of the tracking is necessary in order for the phone and its Apps to 
function properly.  How is my phone going to tell me where the closest library 
is if the phone doesn’t know where I am located?

Then don't post stuff you think doesn't sound right and which comes from 
sources like Kim Commando who is known for their rubbish.
I can go online and in a few minutes find a dozen articles which bash Apple to 
any degree and as Nimer and others pointed out, if you use a smartphone and are 
online to even a moderate degree you are being tracked whether you want it or 
not; it's a trade of and most people are willing to give up a good amount of 
their privacy to enjoy the conveniences smartphones and the online lifestyle 
offer. If you don't want it you can choose not to have a smartphone, you can 
choose to not use a computer connected to the internet, pay cash and do your 
banking in person. Of course that also means you can't buy or book anything 
online, use Uber and all of those things.

Kim Komando is nothing but a kwak out to get page clicks by posting scary 
articles. I'd say you should be much more worried by all the data your provider 
keeps about you, and all the data you yourself put out there on places like 
Facebook, and all the sites tracking what you do on the web, and all the 
cameras watching you when you leave your home, and all the devices you bring 
into your home that are always listening and watching, and all the data miners 
out there, and all your financial data each time you pay with a card, and all 
the services that get access to your banking data when you link banking data 
through sites, and and and... *sigh* I suppose to most people, it is a secret 
as they don't go into privacy settings, and don't read terms of service, but 
this is far from secret, and is nothing Apple is trying to keep hidden.

Apple in fact does the best job of keeping people's information secure and 
private as much as it is possible.
Facebook really hates them because they make it so easy to opt out of much of 
the tracking that is going on and of course any online personality with some 
following can throw out such rubbish. It makes much better link bait to say 
"Apple is tracking you wherever you go" than to say "Your smartphone tracks you 
wherever you go but iPhones do a much better job of letting you maintain more 
privacy".

I agree, also remember Apple doesn't sponsor Kim. I am sometimes very leery of 
taking any computer advice from a syndicated radio program I've been radio for

That is not a secret, nor has it ever been a secret.

 

If people would take the time to read and explore the settings on any device, 
they would already know this.

 

I find it annoying that people like Kim Commando make it sound like Apple is 
doing something devious.  

 

It isn’t Apple’s fault people don’t bother checking the security settings they 
are agreeing to…

Thanks for the information. Apple should do a better job of letting users 
decide how it tracks phones and which services to turn off.
