With the native app I can delete mail and on the iPad only the mail I have not 
read will show up. Is there a way to delete in gmail and have it deleted from 
my other devices where I have the native app? I know imap does this, and that 
is what I want. I am talking between apps. Thanks for any help.

Try changing to a different email account. I get absolutely no junk mail with 
Gmail on my iPhone.
