Another thing to keep in mind is that if you have a light fixture which has 3
or 4 bulbs then you need that many smart bulbs and that can get expensive in a
hurry considering you would pay $20 or $30 US (more in Canada) for each smart
bulb. A single smart switch here is more economical and as I said, if it is
strictly yourself or your family if they are onboard with this it is one thing,
but it's a pain in the butt if visitors turn your switches off in places like
hallways or public rooms because then your smart bulbs are useless until the
switch is turned on again. And if you plug a regular table lamp or floor
standing lamp into a smnart outlet it's the same thing, somebody turns off the
switch on the lamp and your smart outlet can no longer turn the lamp on or off
until you turn it back on and off with the voice command.
Lastly, Amazon smart plugs may be nice and relatively inexpensive, but in a new
home you really want to try and decide on a system where you can get everything
from one manufacturer, e.g. smart switches, smart wall outlets and so on.
Otherwise you end up with a patchwork of smart devices and while you may be
able to control them all with Alexa or Google you may still need several apps
from the various makes to set them up properly before that all happens.

Hi Amy, I would suggest not changing to smart switches, but instead, change to
smart lights. Then, you could use your smart speaker or your phone to control
all of the lights. If you have table, lamps or lamps that plug in, the.

RE: Smart switches

2022-09-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
There are two things you can do: you can either get actual smart wall switches
installed or you can replace all your bulbs with Philips Hue smart bulbs.
The problem with using Philips Hue is that the traditional light switch has to
be switched on, then you can ask Alex, Google or SIRI (Hue supports all of
them) to turn off specific lights, rooms or groups (that of course depends on
your setup and naming of the bulbs and rooms). If you have somebody visiting
who doesn't know how this all works and is willing to also use the voice
commands, chances are they walk into a room and want to turn on the light, of
course the switch is on but the light is off so first they switch the light
off, nothing happens so it is my experience people then push/flick the switch
again and most likely now the light comes on and they are happy. Then they
leave a room or maybe if they are considerate and know that you can't see the
lights they turn off all the lights when they leave and at that point you tell
Alexa to turn on a light but of course it won't work because the switch is off
and there is no power to the smart biulb.

So, going back to smart switches. That is what I would do now, when we got all
our Philips Hue bulbs many years ago these in-wall decora style smart switches
which look like a regular light switch didn't really exist yet. Now they do and
when I did my retail store renovation 2 years ago that is what I put in. The
ones I used are from Leviton and here a sighted person can push them as always,
but you can also control them with Google or Alexa or through various home
automation apps. I am not entirely sure if they support Apple Home Kit or this
new "Matter" standard which is supposed to be coming and supported by almost
everybody.
You can get Leviton smart switches which work via Wi-Fi or you can get a
version which uses the Zigbee wireless protocol to communicate with a hub, in
my case those are the ones we have because this way they integrate with our
alarm panel and app which is Alarm.com.
Lutron also makes a huge selection of smart switches in their Caséta Wireless
selection and here you can also have control for shades and so on. I think
Lutron might be more expensive.
I recently read about some other company which makes a very budget oriented
smart wall switch, but I can't remember the name so you just have to do your
homework.

I am actually thinking of slowly replacing all our in-wall decora style paddle
switches with most likely the Leviton ones since those at my store work well
despite the fact we have Philips Hue bulbs in most of our lights and in the
bathroom I have an actual Hue light fixture, they also do make a lot of stuff.
But we run into this all the time when somebody is visiting then we run around
the house afterwards and turn all the switches back on so we can use Alexa or
the home app to turn them off and have control again. That is why in a new
installation in-wall smart switches is in my opinion the way to go and you can
also add a few smart wall outlets if you think you have things you want to plug
in where you want remote/voice control over whatever appliance is plugged into
that wall socket. You can also get wall sockets which have USB outlets next to
them. If you want coloured lights you could still get a few Philips Hue bulbs
capable of colours.

Best regards,
Sieghard

I use smart plugs for all my plug in lamps and other electrical appliances.
They are easy to set up and you just name them to tell your echo to turn
them on and off. I had one for my Christmas tree last year.

Hi, that sounds like a good deal. I forgot to add that the best
sort to get are those that don’t need yet another hub to plug into a router.
This is what puts me off buying into the philips hue system. My eyes would
respond well to slight changes in lighting and an easy way to manage this would
be great.

Hi, I have been using the app and Alexa for a while now. I use it for lamp
switches, not the wall switches that are also available. The system works well
once set up.

The Kassa app is ok if I remember rightly. You don’t really need it at all once
you are set up properly as it all works through Alexa. I vaguely remember that
initial set up of the plugs and pairing with wifi was a bit tricky. I used
sighted help with this as I had to know which lights were flashing on the
units. The Kassa app is fairly accessible but again it was a lot more efficient
to get sighted help for creating groups.

If you can have some working eyes around for the set up I thoroughly recommend
them. Amazon often has a deal on the smart plugs, but I don’t know about the
wall switch side of things.

Hi,

Just wondering if anybody can speak to the accessibility of the app for these
Tp-Link devices, I believe it may be called “Casa” since the switches are
called that.
I am more interested in the light switches since my retail store has two floors
and upstairs all the lights are controlled with 4 switches. Often during the
winter especially after Christmas there is not so much traffic upstairs so
having all these lights off would probably make a bit of a difference in
electricity use, but it’s too much of a pain in the neck to run upstairs and
turn them off only to run back upstairs behind a customer who goes up and turn
them all on. These switches work with Alexa and I assume there might be a way
to group them so if I put an Alexa Dot downstairs by the register whoever is
working could just say “Alexa, turn on the upstairs lights” if they notice
somebody goes up.
Of course once the lights are connected and set up it may not even be so
necessary to use the app for myself if I can just tell Alexa.

2018-10-18 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi, that sounds like a good deal. I forgot to add that the best sort to
get are those that don’t need yet another hub to plug into a router. This is
what puts me off buying into the philips hue system. My eyes would respond well
to slight changes in lighting and an easy way to manage this would be great.

once set up.

The Kassa app is ok if I remember rightly. You don’t really need it at all
once you are set up properly as it all works through Alexa. I vaguely remember
that initial set up of the plugs and pairing with wifi was a bit tricky. I used
sighted help with this as I had to know which lights were flashing on the
units. The Kassa app is fairly accessible but again it was a lot more efficient
to get sighted help for creating groups.

If you can have some working eyes around for the set up I thoroughly

RE: Accessibility of Tp-Link smart switches and plugs

2018-10-11 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Sieghard,

I've found the Kasa app accessible but I must offer this disclaimer that I set
up my one smart plug over a year ago and haven't really used the app since that
initial setup. I have my one TP-Link smart plug tied to my Echo devices and use
Alexa to turn the lamp attached to it on and off. I have kept the Kasa app
updated and when I opened it just now, it is still very accessible with
Voiceover.

Good luck.

RE: Accessibility of Tp-Link smart switches and plugs

2018-10-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Thanks, Ian, I will consider these, but for now I decided to give the below a
try since on the Amazon Canada store a TP-Link Casa light switch is $39.99 and
these other ones are $52 for a 2-pack and they do get pretty good reviews:

meross Smart Wi-Fi Wall Light Switch, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant
Supported, Remote Control, Timing Function, Fit for US/CA Wall Switches, No Hub
Needed, White (2
Pack)<https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07CPVSVPM/ref=pe_3034960_233709270_TE_item>

I think even if the app for these isn’t very accessible I can just get my
manager to do the setup and after that as you said it’s mostly using Alexa
anyways to turn the lights on or off.

Sieghard

What is “A11Y”?
accessibility (11 characters between a and y in accessibility);
abbreviation that started on Twittter.

I was asking about home kit/SIRI support and whether Wemo
No, WeMo doesn't support Homekit; it's supported by other smart speakers
(voice user interfaces)

products have it. It seems some companies are not interested at all in
supporting Apple home Kit
It's similar to the early days of browsers, mobile, and any other
platform/standard. Home and Voice are the current northstar

and instead support Nest or some other standard which of course is their
decision and it’s no problem, but I amd probably many others who are
invested in iOS
WeMo has a good iOS app that works with VoiceOver

and have no plans to change are not going to buy these products.
I found the IoT supported by Homekit to be limiting and have branched
out to more robust and operable solutions

I will only buy something which has Home Kit support going forward, if
I can’t find it now I’ll wait because I think in a couple of years
everything will be available.
There are other accessible home control interfaces that are winning this
race :)

Hi,

I am grouping a few items together in this message since they all have one
thing in common, they are Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connected devices which you
control via an app.

I am basically interested in feedback on any or all of them from people who
have used them. Specifically, here are a few questions I have:

1. Philips Hue: anybody have any of these connected light bulbs and in
particular how is the SIRI Home Kit integration working? I was hoping I could
get a deal this weekend, but the only starter kits I saw on sale were the
second generation ones which have just in the last week or two been replaced
with the third generation. I think the bridge is actually unchanged, but the
new third generation bulbs are supposed to reproduce colours a lot more
accurately.

2. WiFi switches: by these I mean switches you plug into a power wall
outlet, you then plug in a device (heater, lights, coffee maker etc.) and you
can turn the connected device on or off via the app or on a schedule. I am
interested to know what brands people may have bought, does the brand you have
support home kit and hence SIRI integration?

3. Instapot: this has been discussed before, I think Mary has one. I
think the app for this was accessible and I was curious as to whether it still
is, has it become better or worse with respect to Voiceover accessibility and
are all aspects and features of the app useable?

I did find one good deal yesterday, the new Withings Body scale was on sale at
BestBuy.ca for $99.99 instead of $149.99. I had a $100 Best Buy gift card so
all it cost me was the taxes. Withings used to have what they called the Smart
Body Analyzer and it has now been replaced by two new scales, the Body and Body
Cardio. The Body Cardio also reads your heart rate, but since I have an Apple
Watch as well as a Qardio Blood Pressure monitor I didn't feel that was very
necessary. The new scale gives you the usual range of measurements beyond
weight such as body index, body fat, bone mass etc. It is only three quarters
of an inch thick and looks very nice, it supports the Apple Health app and once
I get it and my wife and I have used it I'll share my impressions. This will be
here just in time to forever record how many pounds of Christmas cookies I eat
and which somehow stick to my belly *smile*.

RE: Philips Hue smart lights, WiFi smart switches and Instapod Smart Bluetooth cooking appliance

2016-11-29 Thread Darrin Porter
Sieghard,

With regards to Item no. 2, I own several WEMO devices which are made by
Belcan. The IOS ap is pretty much accessable and allows me to schedule and
control several devices. I own both wall switches and wall warts, e.g., plug
into an outlet and control whatever you plug into them. The AP is not great,
but can be used by a totally blind person after a pretty steep learning curve
defined by some unlabeled or mislabeled buttons and controls. That is just in
the scheduling function. Turning things on and off via the ap is completely
accessable.

Best regards,

Sieghard

They aren’t cheap, the new connected smoker retails here in Canada for $900 and
you can find it on sale maybe for $100 less. I think Canadian Tire, a big box
store, had an exclusive on it until December 2 and I haven’t checked at all how
much it is in the States.

I too will be curious about that Bradley smoker. I think Bradley was the brand
they talked about a few years ago on Serotek. I looked into it at that time,
and they were really expensive! I don't suppose the price has gone down any.

Well I'd like to get a smart switch but I cna't for the life of me
figure out what I'd hook it up to. Nothing I have works by merely
flipping on the power. My coffee pot doesn't start brewing, my
microwave doesn't start when it gets power etc. So not only do I want
to know if any of htese work well but what in the world someone
actually uses them for other than turning lamps on and off maybe.

There is a great review and demo of the instant Pot in one of the recent
Blind Bargains podcasts. You can find it at www.blindbargains.com

I have the Instant Pot, it's very accessible and has remained so. I
use it a couple times a week and have nothing bad to say about it.
Voiceover reads items in a very odd order but once you get used to it,
no problem.

Hi Sieghard,

you like it once you get it.
Now to the subject of your message. You are correct that I do have an
instant pot Bluetooth model. I have to say, that there are a couple of
aspects of the device and hence the app, that I have not used. You are
supposed to be able to run scripted recipes. That is too complicated for
my
blood. As for controlling the device from your phone, yes. It is
accessible.

You can access all of the various cooking settings, make adjustments,
monitor the pressure, time remaining et Cetera. It's wonderfully
accessible.

Now I have to say that yesterday, I did see a deal on Amazon for the
non-Bluetooth one for 67 or $68, which is a whole lot less than what I
paid

for the Bluetooth device. The buttons on the device are tactile and they
beep when pressed. So you could make a braille chart and memorize it. What
you would then also have to do is memorize or write down the starting
settings for some of the things that you can make adjustments to. All that
being said, I am sure it is doable. But I really appreciate the
convenience

of the accessible Bluetooth model. Should something happen, and you don't
have access to Bluetooth, you can still use the device without that. Of
course, you would have to have labeled or otherwise memorized the buttons
etc. as I earlier referred to. Hope that helps.

were the second generation ones which have just in the last week or two

colours a lot more accurately.

2. WiFi switches: by these I mean switches you plug into a power

and you can turn the connected device on or off via the app or on a

I

think the app for this was accessible and I was curious as to whether it
still is, has it become better or worse with respect to Voiceover
accessibility and are all aspects and features of the app useable?

I did find one good deal yesterday, the new Withings Body scale was on
sale at BestBuy.ca for $99.99 instead of $149.99. I had a $100 Best Buy
gift card so all it cost me was the taxes. Withings used to have what
they

called the Smart Body Analyzer and it has now been replaced by two new
scales, the Body and Body Cardio. The Body Cardio also reads your heart
rate, but since I have an Apple Watch as well as a Qardio Blood Pressure
monitor I didn't feel that was very necessary. The new scale gives you
the

usual range of measurements beyond weight such as body index, body fat,
bone mass etc. It is only three quarters of an inch thick and looks very
nice, it supports the Apple Health app and once I get it and my wife and
I

have used it I'll share my impressions. This will be here just in time to
forever record how many pounds of Christmas cookies I eat and which
somehow stick to my belly *smile*.

Philips Hue smart lights, WiFi smart switches and Instapod Smart Bluetooth cooking appliance

3. Instapot: this has been discussed before, I think Mary has one. I
