I'm a few days late here, but wow! I'm quite surprised it even partially works,
enough to be used by a blind person anyway. I wonder if the camera works? How
about the microphone? Headphone jack? Very interesting anyway. Thanks for the
update.

Subject: The final chapter, was: The story continues... Long lost iPhone 6S has
finally resurfaced after snow melt

Hi everybody,

Finally, here is the long awaited last chatper of my lost iPhone story.

yesterday the package with my iPhone 6S packed in rice arrived. Externally it
looks brand new with not a scratch on it. When I took out the SIM tray it
seemed like there was maybe a bit of moisture there so I left out the SIM tray
and stuck the iPhone in my toaster oven on a really low temperature for a
couple of hours just to maybe expel a bit more moisture from inside.

After that the moment came and I plugged it in. My wife was there and we
quietly watched, but the screen remained black. After about 2 minutes there was
no change and I thought that answered the question as to whether the iPhone was
still working after having been lying on the ground outside for 115 days, first
in snow and temperatures of up to -40 Celsius/Fahrenheit and as warm as +20
Celsius (68 Fahrenheit) and of course having gone through the process when the
snow and ice around it melted and so on. It was also exposed to the sun, back
in March there was another 10 inches of new snow over the course of a week and
in the week or two before my brother found it on April 15 it had rained lightly
a few times.

Anyhow, I left it plugged in and when I came back to my office 2 hours later I
thought I check it out. I pressed the home button and bingo, Voiceover was
there and asked me to enter my passcode. I did so and the phone unlocked. There
was of course no service since I got a new SIM back in December when I lost it
and I had also just installed a new router at my store so I had to reconnect to
WiFi. As soon as I did so the phone started dinging and binging away as emails
came in, push notification alerts sounded and on top of all that it started
playing the lost sound since back on December 22 we logged in to my iCloud
account and triggered the Find my iPhone sound in case I had just dropped it
somewhere in the house.

At that point it had charged up to 82% and everything seemed totally normal. I
went to Settings > General > Software Update and since I registered this phone
on the public beta program, I was told iOS 9.3.2 public beta 2 was available
for download. I started the download and it downloaded the 1.2 Gb file in about
14 minutes, after that the upgrade proceeded normally and the phone was up and
running again in about 12 minutes.

So, happy ending, right? Well, almost. Shortly after I finished the update one
of my employees walked in to ask me something. I happily told her “Look, the
iPhone that was lying in the snow for 4 months is working”. I held it up and
swiped around and Voiceover was chattering. Then she said “OK, but what about
the screen”. I asked “Why, what about the screen” and she said that it was
totally and utterly black. At first I thought that was no problem, maybe the
screen curtain was on. I did a 3-finger triple tap, but to my dismay Voiceover
said “Screen curtain on” and not “off”. I did it again and Voiceover confirmed
the screen curtain was now off. I checked the brightness and even increased it
to 100%, but she said it just was showing a completely black screen.

So, I guess for the time it’s now truly an iPhone for the blind, it works
perfectly, I made a Skype call on it to my Mom and both speaker and microphones
seem to work just fine, but the screen seems to be not working. It will be
interesting to see if in the next few days it comes back. Anyhow, it so happens
that my wife and I have to go to Vancouver next week so I’ll take it an Apple
Store and get it replaced since I have Apple Care Plus and it’s of course
totally worth it to pay the $130 Canadian which is what an accidental damage
replacement costs. Let’s hope the screen doesn’t start working by then *smile*

The end.

Regards,

Sieghard

I doubt the snow made a difference, it’s the temperatures which for a few
nights went down close to minus 40, that means whatever is in the battery would
have been frozen absolutely rock solid and after all, these temperatures exceed
not only the recommended safe operating temperatures but also the storage
temperatures by quite a margin.

Hi,

I dropped an iPod into a bathtub once, and the battery was never the same
again, though otherwise it worked fine. So I'm not surprised that the battery
didn't survive the snow very well. I'm very glad the phone is under Apple Care
protection.

Cheers,

lost iPhone 6S has finally resurfaced after snow melt

Hi everybody,

Finally, here is the long awaited last chatper of my lost iPhone
story.

yesterday the package with my iPhone 6S packed in rice arrived.
Externally it looks brand new with not a scratch on it. When I
took out the SIM tray it seemed like there was maybe a bit of
moisture there so I left out the SIM tray and stuck the iPhone
in my toaster oven on a really low temperature for a couple of
hours just to maybe expel a bit more moisture from inside.

After that the moment came and I plugged it in. My wife was
there and we quietly watched, but the screen remained black.
After about 2 minutes there was no change and I thought that
answered the question as to whether the iPhone was still working
after having been lying on the ground outside for 115 days,
first in snow and temperatures of up to -40 Celsius/Fahrenheit
and as warm as +20 Celsius (68 Fahrenheit) and of course having
gone through the process when the snow and ice around it melted
and so on. It was also exposed to the sun, back in March there
was another 10 inches of new snow over the course of a week and
in the week or two before my brother found it on April 15 it had
rained lightly a few times.

Anyhow, I left it plugged in and when I came back to my office 2
hours later I thought I check it out. I pressed the home button
and bingo, Voiceover was there and asked me to enter my
passcode. I did so and the phone unlocked. There was of course
no service since I got a new SIM back in December when I lost it
and I had also just installed a new router at my store so I had
to reconnect to WiFi. As soon as I did so the phone started
dinging and binging away as emails came in, push notification
alerts sounded and on top of all that it started playing the
lost sound since back on December 22 we logged in to my iCloud
account and triggered the Find my iPhone sound in case I had
just dropped it somewhere in the house.

At that point it had charged up to 82% and everything seemed
totally normal. I went to Settings > General > Software Update

2016-04-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Connie,

I actually sort of hope it doesn’t start working. While everything else seems
to work, one never knows if being exposed to such low temperatures and all that
isn’t going to cause problems down the road. I have to do a bit more testing,
but last night when I came home the battery was dead. I had charged the phone
all the way on Friday afternoon and it was basically just sitting there locked
for 24 hours so I wonder if the battery was damaged maybe by being frozen to
-40 degrees. I charged it again over night and right now (a little less than 2
hours) the battery percentage is sitting at 97% which doesn’t seem strange.
I’ll use it today to listen to Audible quite a bit and see where it is later
this afternoon or eveing. Since the phone has a SIM which is not activated it
is basically an iPod Touch right now and it really shouldn’t use up that much
battery just for audio playback.

Hi Sieghard,
How cool that your iPhone is working. With any luck the screen will start

Hi Cristobal,

I did actually send this to Rob. Haven’t heard back from him. I guess we’ll see
if he mentions it on one of the next Podcasts. At this point there is still no

The end.

Sieghard,

Congratulations! Something that strikes me though, is: between now and the time
that you get the screen replaced, will you use the phone and discover if your
battery life is greatly extended? in the past, we have all discussed the
efficacy of the screen curtain as a battery life saver, Some saying it makes
no difference and some saying it does. my position, for what it is worth, is
that it does make a difference based on the following: I have a case for my
phone which has a fold over flap which covers the screen, if I am listening to
a book, say, at night, using earphones, I have the phone with the screen flap
closed under my pillow, if I have the screen curtain off, the phone gets very
warm. if I have the screen curtain on, phone gets noticeably less warm. as heat
is an indication of expended energy, I can only assume that less energy is
being used by the phone. so, with your screen not working at all, we have the
perfect opportunity to discover just what difference the screen makes for
battery life. if it makes a substantial difference, it might be worth thinking
about putting in an application to Apple to give us the toggle of turning the
screen, completely, off.

just a thought, Sandy

Hi Sighard,

How cool! I'm so glad it basically works. Maybe you can do a testimonial for
Apple ☺️

The end.

Regards,

Sieghard

RE: The final chapter, was: The story continues... Long lost iPhone 6S has finally resurfaced after snow melt

2016-04-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It was in a case from Evutec, they are super-thin cases which only cover the
back and the sides and have just a little bit of a rim that sticks up higher
than the screen so it doesn't scratch if you drop it on a regular smooth floor.
On their website they say "We’ve combined the strength of DuPont™ Kevlar®
fibers with the beauty and sleekness of a case so thin, it may as well be a
skin..".
They make a series of cases which have a wood veneer finish and I like them
because they look pretty good, offer decent protection from normal drops
without adding much bulk and they fit in most slightly over-size hip holsters.
In any case, it was by no means in something like an Otterbox Defender or
Lifeproof case, with the Evutec case there is no screen protector and the
charging port, headphone jack and speaker/microphone grills are completely
exposed.

Sieghard

wow. I definitely lurk on this list, but it has been entirely
worthwhile just to read this story! Unbelieveable! And I do hope you
tell us what happens next. I am impressed, as I once dropped my IPhone
5 in a toilet (it was in the back pocket of my jeans, never again,
ugh), and nothing could save it. I echo the curiosity about what case
it was in, if it was in one at all.

Apple Care Plus covers 2 accidental damage replacements, it doesn't matter if
you drop it in the toilet or drive over it with the car. A Couple of years ago
I fell on my 5S and bend it and received a replacement for a $79.99 fee. The
fee for the 6S and 6S Plus has gone up to $129.99 just as Apple Care Plus has
gone up significantly from $99.99 to $169.99. Some of this is due to the lower
value of the Canadian Dollar, but the price has also gone up in the States
simply because the phones are more expensive.

Does Apple care plus cover water damage? Hope it all works out for you!

I'm delighted at this news and do wonder what Apple will say to this adventure!
Yes, be sure you let them know!:)

I hope that either the screen just starts working again or that you're able to
replace it very soon.

Meantime, we're so pleased to hear the news!:)

The end.

Regards,

Sieghard

I agree. That is one of those things Apple should brag about. It would be
even more awesome if the screen started working again on its own.

2016-04-23 Thread Richard Turner
I think you should print out your Email and take it with you t the Apple store.

If only the screen was damaged, that is a totally amazing story of durability.

They should give you a free replacement just on that account. Not really, but
in a perfect world …

finally resurfaced after snow melt

The end.

Regards,

Sieghard
