Re: Unread emails

This works a treat, many thanks. I left the account with list traffic out
of the notifications, so it does as it says on the can.

Brill!

Hi Avnish and Tom,

Yes, Tom, it' easy to do this in Outlook, but the mail app on the iPhone has
no filter that allows you to display unread messages only. Hopefully iOS 7
may include such a feature.

Now, Avnish, here is a work-around which I found by doing a Google search
for "displaying only unread emails in iOS". I did also set this up on my
iPhone to test it and it works like a charm even if the unread messages are
already in your Inbox. If they are all over then you can go to one of them
by doble tapping on it in the Notification Center, read it and after you go
back to the main messages list, you can touch the time and do a 3-finger
swipe down right from there to bring up the Notification Center again to go
to your next unread mail. As you read them, they disappear from the
Notification Center list and you can repeat this until the Notification
Center has no more Unread Mail notifications.

I added a few extra comments and at one point I substituted the proper
gesture for invoking the Notification Center for Voiceover users.
Here is the article:

View Unread Mail in iOS using Notifications Workaround
by Christian Brady . March 20, 2013

While Apple added "VIP" to email in iOS 6, a feature that let's you assign
certain people in your contacts to be VIPs and thus be automatically
flagged, I still miss being able to quickly view only my Unread email. I
often will have a number of unread messages, but with my most recent day or
two of email being read. The result is having to scroll down and down and
down to find the unread messages. Well I have a found a workaround!

In the iOS preferences, go into Notifications and then select Mail.
In that section, right at the top, you will see an option to Show X number
of unread messages, set it to your desired value.
On the iPad you can set that as high as 20 and in the iPhone the limit is
10.
It is worth spending time in the Notification preferences because there are
a number of other key features you might have missed, for example, the
ability to set only certain email accounts to trigger notices or appear in
the alerts or on the lock screen.
This is handy, for example, if you want only your work email to show up on
your lock screen.

Additional Comment:
Make sure that the email account or accounts you want to view in this way
have "Notification Center" set to on.
You do not have to select Alerts or Banners for this to work, if you like
you can set the Alert Style to No Alerts.

Finally, if you wish, you can go into Settings, Mail, Contacts and Calendars
and set up to 5 lines of the email to show as Preview.
The result is that touching an item in the status bar and a quick 3-finger
swipe down will bring down your most recent unread messages with up to 5
lines of the email visible. Tap on the email and go directly to it without
having to scroll endlessly in Mail.

Additional Comment:
It doesn't seem to matter if I set Preview to "None", 1, 2, 3 4 or 5 lines,
if I bring up the Notification Center and swipe to one of the unread mail
messages, Voiceover promptly starts reading the entire message if I let it.

Lastly, once you properly set up the Notification Center, if you bring it up
and it doesn't show any unread messages, but you know for sure you have
some, just close the Mail app and by that I mean bring up the app switcher
and remove it from there. Now if you bring up the Notification Center again
your unread mail should be there.

Regards,
Sieghard

Thunderbird allows you to do this as well, plus there's a hot key that
takes you to the next unread message. I don't see a way to do this with
the native client on the iPhone though. It just grabs your most recent
messages, whether they're read or unread.
