I downloaded the latest IOS update yesterday and noticed that in the voices
option, there is now an item called Siri. Is this just where you can change the
Siri voice?

Ok. So, since I’ve found out the vizio sound bar I have doesn’t support Dolby
atmos, I feel better about upgrading the remote only. I’m hoping that with the
new remote and voiceover, I’ll be able to navigate easier up and down rather
than just across. Also, I seem to be entering the rotor by accident with the
old touch screen remote.

I’ll be curious to hear how it works out! Ordered mine just before reading your
post on here. I had just come across a review of it on CNET and immediately
pulled the plug. I also hated the thinness of the original 4K remote.

Note the apple tv 4k (new) supports the dolby atmos format,

But without the speakers to work with it you don't just get dolby atmos,

If the home pods support atmos,
Great but does your sound bar?

I believe the newer sonos arc and base do but my sonos play bar doesn't,
Neither do the sonos play 1 speakers.

It may have to do with your TV's settings. We bought a new 55 inch LG OLED TV
before Christmas which has all the latest features and also the new Sonos
surround package with the Arc soundbar, wireless Sub and Sonos SL for rear
speakers. When we first hooked it up I expected the TV to automatically realize
there was a soundbar and to send output there, but it did not, sound came from
the soundbar/surround system as well as the TV's internal speakers. When my
wife found this in Settings she saw that internal speakers were included and
she had to manually change it to just the HDMI ARC output. If your soundbar is
directly under the TV did you make sure the sound came from it and not the TV?

Hello Mary,

The new Apple TV remote is a large improvement from the previous model. I would
compare it to the 3rd generation Apple TV, with some of the features of the
Apple TV HD and up.

1. It has physical buttons arranged in a circle at the top of the remote and
these are used for navigation, think of it like a directional pad with the up,
down, left and right buttons with a select button in the middle. Just above
that to the top right is the power button, this is a nice addition in my eyes.
Below the directional pad is the back button on the left and the home button on
the right. Under the back button is the play/pause button and directly under
that is the new mute button. Under the Home button on the right is the volume
up and down rocker button.
2. One thing to remember is the circle directional pad is also touch sensitive
and you can perform the same gestures as on the touch capable Siri remote from
the prior models. Luckily these gestures can be turned off as they can make
navigation difficult with Voiceover.

All in all the new Siri remote is a welcome upgrade and worth it in my opinion.
One more note is that it is backwards compatible with the older models of the
Apple TV, going all the way back to the Apple TV HD/4th generation.

I hope this helps,

Ed Worrell

Re: Voiceover and the new Siri remote

2021-05-25 Thread Ed Worrell
Mary,

I am using a LG 4k TV. I honestly couldn’t tell you more than that though. As
long as you have the new Apple TV, you’ll be able to use the Dolby Atmos audio
as the Apple TV is what makes that possible. The toughest part of the Dolby
Atmos is finding content that supports the format. I haven’t found any as of
right now. I’ll keep looking though.

I had the sound bar set up in a different HDMI port and for some reason I was
still getting audio through it, but it was with a 1 second delay or so. I made
using both the HomePods and the sound bar unbearable. I even turned off the ARC
function on the Apple TV and just tried using the sound bar with the HomePods
connected via Airplay like I use to with the 4th gen Apple TV, and the delay
was still there as well.

I might have to just stop using the sound bar all together in the living room
and stick with the HomePods, I find the audio to be better rounded and voices
are much clearer as well.

Hi Ed,
There are instructions for how to get that audio to come through the homePod.
It sounds like you did that. And once done, I had the impression that all the
audio would go to the HomePods, and nothing to the sound bar. So I’m sort of
surprised you’re getting any sound from the sound bar. But apparently you also
have to have a TV with the ability to pass through certain formats. I’m trying

What sort of TV are you using?

Mary,

I have also noticed some weird behaviors with the HomePods…
1. If you have a sound bar connected directly to the Apple TV or your TV set
and your HomePods connected with Airplay to the Apple TV there is a noticeable
lag with the audio from the sound bar. I am beating my head over the desk
trying to figure out how to fix the lag in the audio. Currently I have only my
HomePods connected with Airplay and I am also using the ARC channel so that my
TV, Playstation 5 and my wife's Nintendo Switch come through the HomePod
speakers. I am actually pleased with the sound quality and I might not even
reconnect the sound bar.

2021-05-24 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks a lot, Ed. It does help. I had seen an article that talked about how you
could turn off that touch stuff, which I will certainly do. Looking forward to
my new 4K TV, even though I can’t see. I’m really hoping for good things for my
HomePods and also the easier remote.

Re: Voiceover and the new Siri remote

2021-05-24 Thread Ed Worrell

Ed Worrell

Voiceover and the new Siri remote

2021-05-24 Thread Mary Otten
I wasn’t sure where to post this, since it’s really a question about this new
Siri remote that comes with the new Apple TV 4K. I ordered one of those,
because I understand that I should be able to use my HomePods stereo pair for
all sorts of TV output with the new Apple TV plus a properly equipped
television with a RC or EARC. I wonder if anybody has this new remote and if
there’s anything particularly noteworthy about using it with voiceover. I know
the remote controls have changed, and I’ve seen some descriptions that are of
course related to how cited folks would use it. I’ve googled, and I haven’t
seen anything about voiceover in conjunction with the new remote. Not even on
Apple support pages. Hence my question.
