Strange. That does not happen to me. I use my iPhone with background app 
refresh disabled as well.

Hi,

I use audio memos pro, it alloows you to record in m4a format when auto 
compress option is enable and other great features. It costs about 10 bucks I 
think.

Also, there is a free version, but is very poor quality as I remember.
