Re: Accessible Portable Power Bank

2021-11-11 Thread Arnold Schmidt
The following only is my opinion, if one wants an accessible power bank, then
that is what they want. I am all for things being accessible, but at what a
cost? I have two regular ones, made by Anker, one 1 mah and the other
26000. I have never had one of them run completely down, I just keep an
approximate count of how long I have used them and recharge them in time. I
think the smaller one can charge this phone maybe 3 times, the other one maybe
6 times. I can tell when they are charging, they get warm around the charging
point, and begin to cool down when they have finished. I think the 1 mah
one now is about $25, the other one comparably priced. I remember the one that
came out a few years ago, that talked, and they wanted $85 for that thing. In
my opinion, what a waste of money!

MamaPeach,
It is a strange phenomenon that when a person asks for information on a topic,
some people feel the need to express an opinion about whether that person
should buy this or that, or do this or that, when the question was for
information not opinions.

I generally ignore those posts because they are off topic and completely
irrelevant.

You never have to explain to anyone why you want information.

I learned something about the Amazon Lady and timers

2021-11-11 Thread Richard Turner
There has been a lot of discussion about the Amazon devices and Google devices
lately. I only have Amazon devices.
I may be the last one to know this, but if I'm not, I thought I would share
what I figured out today.

When using a device like an Echo or Sonos speaker with the A lady, I would set
timers for my coffee and my wife's tea.
I would always just speak the amount of time.
I knew you could have multiple timers going at once and it would distinguish
between them by the length.
I then decided to give them a name.
Tea Timer and Coffee Timer.
Now, I can just say to it, Start the tea timer. Or start the coffee timer and
the length is already set.

There you have it.

Re: I learned something about the Amazon Lady and timers

2021-11-11 Thread Richard Turner
I just used my voice. See my response to alan a moment ago.
Asking what timers are available seems to be the same as asking what timers are
running; so unless something is running, it will respond with no timers
available.
I just tried that.
But, if you have more than one timer running, you can ask what timers are
running, and it will tell you them by name.
Or you can ask, how much time on the tea timer, and it tells you.

that is what they want.

There has been a lot of discussion about the Amazon devices and Google devices
lately. I only have Amazon devices.

I may be the last one to know this, but if I’m not, I thought I would share
what I figured out today.

When using a device like an Echo or Sonos speaker with the A lady, I would set
timers for my coffee and my wife’s tea.

It seems to just remember. I said; set a tea timer for 3 minutes.
When it was done, it said tea timer is finished or something like that.
So, then I said Start the tea timer.
It responded with tea timer for three minutes running...
No fuss, no muss.
I'm glad I am not the only one who didn't realize this.

Well there used to be one by inner grid that was 15,000 MAH that did exactly
what you described which had one button and unfortunately they’re not being
sold anymore it had two ports technically it had three but one was to charge
the juice pack which is what I will call it and it would beep and vibrate at
the same time again sadly it’s no longer happening as far as sale. I too also
on in anker one. it has a screen that actually is shaped like a circle and it
actually displays in print the levels of whatever you’re charging plus the
level of the battery pack or bank itself which I can’t use obviously it also
has a button on the side which is very typical but usually my iPhone beeps and
vibrates when I’ve plugged it into the power bank.

RE: I learned something about the Amazon Lady and timers

2021-11-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Richard,

Do you do this by voice or in the app? Just asking because while I knew you
could ask to set a timer for a certain length and name it, e.g. French Fries or
Eggs, when I just asked my speaker "What are my timers" I was told that I had
no timers. You said you created a coffee and tea timer so it almost sounds like
those are saved like you can set and save multiple alarms. If that is so then
shouldn't you be able to ask what timers are available?

RE: apple watch

2021-11-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Simon, there is "wrist detection" in Settings which is turned on by default.
The back of the watch has LED lights which are used to track heart rate and I'm
not sure if there are other sensors used when you do an EKG, but through these
and probably also because of sensors like accelerometer, gyroscope and so on
the watch knows if it is on a wrist or just sitting on a table and of course if
it's charging it knows it can't be on the wrist unless you have a built-in Qi
charger in your wrist.
Here is an article which explains the heart rate monitoring:

How Apple Watch Measures Heart Rate & Its Accuracy Explained

The Apple Watch is capable of tracking many health-related aspects of your
body, including heart rate. The heart rate monitor is less accurate than you
might think, but there are ways to improve the accuracy of heart rate readings
received from the Apple Watch.
The Apple Watch Series 5 was released in September 2019, and it remains one of
the most sought after smartwatches available. Several smartwatches and fitness
trackers on the market have the ability to track heart rate, but the Apple
Watch remains one of the most commonly purchased products with heart rate
tracking. It was cleared by the FDA for its precision. Despite that, studies
have suggested that the Apple Watch's accuracy is less than 50-percent.
The Apple Watch tracks heart rate using photoplethysmography. While this sounds
complicated, it just means it uses light to track your heart rate. Red things,
like blood, reflect red light and absorb green light. The Apple Watch uses
green light to help detect how much light is being absorbed by the blood in the
veins, and that fluctuation can be used to track heart rate. The green LED
lights flash hundreds of times each second in order to get an accurate reading.
This is the type of reading it takes as someone is actively working out, and it
supports tracking heart rates that are 30–210 beats per minute. The heart rate
sensor also uses infrared light to track heart rate in the background all the
time, and to provide heart rate notifications.

How To Increase The Accuracy Of Readings
Heart rate can also be tracked using the Digital Crown on the side of the Apple
Watch. When you place the finger of your opposite hand on the crown, it creates
a closed circuit between your hands that goes through your heart. Because of
this closed circuit, the heart rate measurement is much more accurate, and you
will also get a much faster reading than what you experience with other methods.
The Apple Watch’s accuracy level can be different from person to person. For
some, it’s impossible to get a heart rate reading at all. However, there are
things that can be done to help get a more accurate heart rate reading more
consistently. Making sure the Apple Watch fits well is one of the best ways to
ensure an accurate reading. The watch should be not too tight or too loose, and
it needs to remain on the top of the wrist a all times. Wrist detection also
needs to be turned on in order to have heart rate detection whatsoever. Anytime
Power Saving mode is turned on, the heart rate sensor will also stop tracking
the heart rate. Tattoos, skin perfusion, and the type of movement may also
affect the accuracy of the Apple Watch readings.

Yes, the watch knows if you wear it or not. When you first put it on and if you
set a passcode you have to enter that or you can set it to unlock when you
unlock your iPhone, once that is done you don't have to enter a passcode as
long as it stays on your wrist, but as soon as you take it off you have to
unlock it again.
Also, if you use Apple Pay on the watch and you have unlocked it before, then
all you have to do is double press the side button (the flat one, not the
digital crown) and your wallet coms up, you hold the watch up to the card
terminal and it will authorize, no extra entry of the passcode is required.

What exactly are the issues supposed to be? I saw a google update earlier and
just went back into my App Store app and checked and it is version 185.0.
However, when I opened Google on my iPhone 11 (I use iOS 15.1) everything is as
always, I have a search box, a button for voice search and then the weather and
a bunch of cards with all sorts of news and stuff and Voiceover reads
everything just as it always has.

Re: Accessible Portable Power Bank

2021-11-11 Thread CHELA Robles

Actually for whatever reason many groups.io posts get blocked because of spam
filters mostly on our providers. That message is in fact one of those
messages. The group owner has nothing to do with it. I've actually received
that notice on posts I've made to groups I own. Obviously, I didn't ban

RE: Accessible Portable Power Bank

2021-11-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I know there used to be one, I think it was called Summit or something, which
could speak how much charge was left, but for thew most part there isn't much
to be accessible on an external battery apart from that. I really don't worry
too much about it, if I use it to charge my phone a couple of times I plug it
in and charge it and I guess you could always call Aira or Be My Eyes to get
them to check how many LED's are on or, if it's a fancier model with an LCD
screen to read that; Seeing AI may even be able to help there if it can scan
what's on the screen. Anyways, most models just have 3 or 4 LED's which
indicate how much charge is left.

Does anyone know of an accessible portable power bank that is available. I
found a couple of reviews online, but when going to the link provided, the
items were no longer available. I am not looking for a phone case that charges,
I am looking for something that can charge a phone and possibly other USB
devices and is simple for a blind person to use. I was really hopeful about one
of the items I had found, but sadly it is not being sold anymore. Any
information would be greatly appreciated.

% level.Simon, there is "wrist detection" in Settings which is turned on by

When you first put it on and if you
set a passcode you have to enter that or you can set it to unlock when you
unlock your iPhone, once that is done you don't have to enter a passcode as
long as it stays on

Does anyone know of an accessible portable power bank that is available. I
found a couple of reviews online, but when going to the link provided, the
items were no longer available. I am not looking for a phone case that charges,
I am looking for something that can charge a phone and possibly other USB
devices and is simple for a blind person to use. I was really hopeful about one
of the items I had found, but sadly it is not being sold anymore. Any
information would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if you use Apple Pay on the watch and you have unlocked it before, then
all you have to do is double press the side button (the flat one, not the
digital crown) and your wallet coms up, you

Re: Accessible Portable Power Bank

2021-11-11 Thread Duane Steele
I guess my power bank's an antique! Four years ago, The Harbolt Company briefly
carried a power bank that beeped or vibrated to indicate battery levels. I got
one of them, and it still works. Unfortunately, the company that made them
wanted too much money. So Brent Harbold was forced to discontinue carrying
them. To my knowledge, no other such accessible "juicebox" has ever been made.
I guess that when I no longer have this one, I'll have to rely on sighted help
or just guess when it's time to charge the box.

RE: Iphone with ios 15

2021-11-11 Thread Richard Turner
Contact the developer.
There is a change in iOS 15.1 that should allow apps like that to work under
iOS 15.1, but the developer has to make an adjustment to how it handles
notifications.
Though, you could just try resetting the notifications under settings,
notifications, speaking clock.

RE: I learned something about the Amazon Lady and timers

2021-11-11 Thread M. Taylor
This is fantastic information, Richard. Thank you for posting as I certainly
had no idea how to use this feature.

In the last couple of days, I have visited a couple of local VoiceOver users
and, like me, they had no idea how powerful Alexa can be in iOS / iPad OS or on
the Echo devices.

I know that may sound crazy given how popular Alexa is but, to be honest, I
really do enjoy using Siri for most of my daily activities and have every
intention of continuing to do so.

I am so glad that we have access to the three major voice-assistant systems.

There has been a lot of discussion about the Amazon devices and Google devices
lately. I only have Amazon devices.
I may be the last one to know this, but if I’m not, I thought I would share
what I figured out today.

When using a device like an Echo or Sonos speaker with the A lady, I would set
timers for my coffee and my wife’s tea.

RE: OT question file conversions

2021-11-11 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Ann,

Pazera Audio Extractor has the ability to do bulk file conversions. I think
this is easier if you create a separate folder and name it something like File
Conversions and copy the files to be converted into it. You have to decide
whether the time to do this extra step is worth any time savings it gives you.
If the files to be converted are located across several folders, the effort to
find them and copy them in order to do a bulk conversion might take as much
time as simply adding them individually to the Pazera conversion window.

You can browse for and add an entire folder of files to be converted by
pressing ctrl + f when Pazera is open and then browsing to the desired folder
and executing ok to add the files. You can browse for individual files to
convert by pressing ctrl + o and executing ok when the file to be converted is
selected. Pazera will add the selected files to the conversion list and mark
the files for conversion and should move to the Output directory drop-down box
which I always leave as The same as input file.

You can then tab a couple of times to be taken to the File name prefix
drop-down which I always leave blank since I don’t want the name of the file to
be converted to change since I like the converted file to have the same name as
the source file, just with the converted file extension. From your post, it
sounds as if is selected in the File name prefix drop-down. You
can place focus on the value in the drop-down and press the backspace key to
clear it and your converted filename will be unchanged accept for its new
extension. There is also a File name suffix drop-down which you should also
clear.

As you stated, ctrl + e will begin the conversion when you’re ready.

I hope the above is helpful but post back if you have more questions.

Yeah, I setup a passcode a week or so back for the mask unlock of the phone,
And was interested to see that it locked when I took it off,

I wondered how it knew,
Other than it’s back isn’t against the skin anymore.
I wondered if there might be something in the strap.

You’ve just mentioned something I’m always thinking to ask,

If the watch isn’t on it wont ring, at least I don’t think it does,

But if you put it on,
It does,

Or with anything relating to the watch, that
Or is the back of the watch sensitive to the arm being securely attached.

Hi Richard,

You can also do this on the iPhone, but as I said in my reply to Doug who in a
different thread recommended this feature I caution people about this feature
because it will answer whether you want or not. In the case of the Apple Watch
it may not do so if you are not wearing the watch, but if you enable this on
your iPhone for example and don't actively hang up the other person may not
hang up either and continue to listen or maybe your phone is not really close
and you don't hear it ringing which could especially happen if you have it set
to mute and then again the call will be answered and if you have a conversation
going or maybe are in some other situation where you really don't want somebody
to hear what is going on then you have no control over this. I have used this
feature occasionally like for example if I was maybe expecting a call but I was
doing something where my hands were dirty or occupied like cooking, woodworking
or digging in my garden, but I really make sure I turn this off again right
away when I don't need it any more.

OK, this is the second time this week already I get to eat my words.

I guess either things changed withWatchOS 8 or I was accidentally hitting the
answer call button when I thought I was doing a two finger double tap.

IN look through the settings, I did discover something else that is possible to
set up.

You can set the Apple Watch to answer automatically after a set number of
seconds.
ON the Apple Watch, check under Settings, Accessibility and flick to Auto
Answer Calls.
Turn it on by double tapping with one finger a couple of times as the first one
opens the setting, then the next turns it on. Then, there is a scroll bar that
probably defaults to 5% which when you flick once more says 3 seconds.
Go back to that scroll bar and flick up I checked it out up to 50% which was
about 30 seconds.
Anyway, not something I will use unless I know my hands are going to be busy
doing dishes or something, then it might be a good thing to set.

Sorry for the misinformation.
