 NLS mobile applications

NLS is in the process of developing applications to enable the download and
reading of its books using commercial mobile devices. Two versions are being
developed independently—one for Apple iOS devices (iPhone, iPod touch, and
iPad) and one for Google Android devices.

 Some features are outlined below.

 The applications will:
 ·play NLS digital talking books (ANSI/NISO Z39.96-2002)
·communicate with Bluetooth-connected refreshable braille displays
for reading NLS braille (BRF) files
 ·download books directly from BARD
·accept books loaded from a connected computer (e.g., iTunes files)
·be free, but require a BARD account to be activated and to download
 books
 · employ the accessibility features native to the devices, such as
Talkback and Brailleback on Android and Voiceover on iOS

The iOS application is at the internal testing stage. The NLS Engineering
Section is evaluating this working version without all of its final features.
NLS plans to have the Beta version, with corrections and enhanced
functionality, available for selected Beta testers to evaluate in several
weeks. The iOS version is expected to be available to patrons in late spring.

The Android application will only be available on Android 4.2 “Jelly Bean”
and later versions because of poor accessibility support on earlier versions.
The application is expected to be available to patrons on the Android market
 in late summer.

Here's part of the issue going forward though. Currently ATT doesn't force
you to choose one of their shared data plans. However my understanding from a
area manager of ATT's is that once the iPhone 5 comes out. They're going to
adopt the same model VZ has. Meaning that if you want the upgrade price on a
device. They're going to force you to switch in to 1 of these shared data
plans. So, unless you wanta either pay full price for your devices or buy
older 1's off of Ebay, etc. Now, I'm not sure about any of you. However, I
don't have the money to pay full price for a new iPhone 5 when it comes out.
So, perhaps none of us will have much of a choice going forward. Or, we'll
keep using older devices. These are questions we'll have to ask ourselves.
We'll also have to wait see if they really adopt this model going
 henceforth.

 Raul,

Where things get incredibly silly is as you increase your data from perhaps
4Gb to 6Gb the base cost goes down but the per phone charge goes up. So, the
only way these data plans make sense is for people with lots of devices. ATT
really did not take into account the families with two or three phones. The
$70 for unlimited text and voice is not to bad I suppose, although the cost
for text is so out of line with reality, but hey it is a cash-cow for
 carriers. :)

 On Aug 29, 2012, at 11:53 PM, Raul A. Gallegos r...@raulgallegos.com wrote:

Hi, basically here's how they work. You get unlimited voice calls and texts.
You pay for a base plan, which doesn't include any phones, but then you pay
for each phone you add. As an example, if you go with a 4gb plan with 3
phones, you would pay $70 for the plan itself and $40 per phone. So, do the
math. 70 + 120 is 190 plus tax. Now if you take one of their older plans
like the 700 minute shared minute plan with unlimited text and mobile to any
mobile and 3 phones, the cost is 60 for the plan, plus 30 for the texting,
plus roughly 10 per each phone, plus the data on those phones. So, 60 plus
30 plus 30 for 3 phones makes 120. Now add data. Let's say 30 per phone for
3gb each. that's an extra 90 making it 210. So maybe going with the 4gb plan
for those same 3 phones will save you 20. However if you have an older plan
like the one paying 15 or 20 per month on data plans, then switching to the
new data shared plan costs more.

 Hope this helps.

Although, grin, perhaps I'm not really paying any more in the long run,
but I just couldn't figure that out for sure. I tried to wade through

just got kind of frustrated and quit looking for right now.

I was amazed at the fact that the store was jam-packed with customers.
While I no longer frequent the A T T Wireless or Verizon Wireless

as much as I used to, I visit enough to have been truly surprised. There
was a waiting list to enter the store.

I asked the receptionist why the store was so busy and she said it was
because of all the people who are pre-ordering iPhone 5.

It would appear that not everyone was underwhelmed by Apple's keynote
 presentation.

After leaving the store, I decided to go over to the Verizon Wireless
 store
and, it too, was jam-packed with people preordering.

All I can say is that there appears to be something magical about the
Apple-effect, as I have come to think of it.

By the way, I decided not to wait at the A T T wireless store. The
receptionist reminded me that I can check to see if I am eligible for an
upgrade by doing the following from my iPhone:

 1.
 Open the Phone App.

 2.
 Switch to the Dial Pad.

 3.
 Dial *639#

 4.
Tap the Call button. By the way, 6 3 9 spells the word NEW. You will
receive a text message stating your eligibility status.

Joe, yes, you need an activation code. I would suggest you get side
assistance. You'll probably need to use your computer to verify your account.
I had a lot of difficulty with this, even with side assistance. We finally
 got done, though. Good luck.

dode what are you using for those random messages at the end of the posts?

Hey there, as time allows I'll do more audio game reviews. I have another
couple in the works for more Storm8 games. I've already done 2 of those which
can be found at http://www.raulgallegos.com. Now, as to your question, I
don't know if they have a Mac version, but mp3tag is free and is an awesome
music tagger. The url is http://www.mp3tag.de/en/index.html The default
language there is German, but I gave you the English url. I've used this
program for many years and have donated to them because I like it so much.

I hope this one can help.
