Re: [Fwd: Re: managing multiple participants]

2003-11-12 Thread Andre Merzky
  Original Message

 Hi there,

When I start a vnc server enabling others to share the session using a
common password, I would like to being able to switch between active
and passive participants. I could imagine different modes of operation:

  1) one active user - many observer
  2) many active users (sending mouse/keyboard events) - many observer
  3) all active users

With a stock vnc installation, there is no way to do this that I am aware
 of.

I am curious - are you running a Windows vnc server, where all
participants see the same remote desktop? It's my understanding that with
a *nix vnc server, each client gets their own desktop.

We do run on Unix (SGI and/or Linux), but here the behaviour is
the same: each client sees the same desktop. You can start
multiple servers (with multiple desktops) though. I do not know
about windows.

If you are running a Windows server, in the many/all active user cases, do
you want different participants' mouse and key strokes to be combined by
the vnc server? Or do you want one participant to control the server at a
 time?

The combination of client inputs is already working natively -
you can use VNC in kollaborative mode, where all clients are
allowed to give input - quite messy sometimes :-)

Also, you can configure it the way that only one (or a subset of)
client(s) has control - the other would connect read-only then.

Our exact problem is that you specify that behaviour on startup -
we would like to move the input fokus around on runtime...

I ask because I am a graduate student doing research in this area. As a
part of the research, I have been modifying the Windows vnc 3.3.7 server
and client to support multiple clients, but only with one client in
control at a time. The other clients can observe, ask for control, and
get it, in a manner similar to Microsoft NetMeeting.

That sounds about what we want! :-) As said, I do not know about
windows - is your work portable to the Unix-version of VNC?

Cheers, thanks for your reply!

Andre Stefan.

several flavors of vnc (mainly windows version) support an internal file

RE : Starting VNCViewer by right clicking on Machine in Network Neighborhood

Yes, I find it very useful!

I'd like to know where you'd found documentation about the use/syntax in this
particular registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Folder\

The .cmd file is used to trim off the first \\ from %D. Do you think it's
possible to do so without using external file?

Objet : Starting VNCViewer by right clicking on Machine in
 Network Neighborhood

I was looking for this information and having a lot of
trouble finding it. My brother came up with this. I've only
tested this on Windows 2000 and it works great. Sometimes
the simple stuff is really elegant...

Here is a registry key to import:

 -cut here vnc.reg
 Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Folder\shell\VNC]

 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Folder\shell\VNC\command]
 @=c:\\startvnc.cmd \%D\
 --- cut here

Here is the command file to launch VNCVIEWER - name it
startvnc.cmd or change the name in the registry key.

 cut here--- startvnc.cmd
 set addr=%1
 start C:\Progra~1\RealVNC\vncviewer.exe %addr:~3,-1%:5900
 exit
 cut heree---

Just import the registry key, copy the above commands to a
 file named c:\startvnc.cmd.

That's all there is to it.

This depends on the NETBIOS name of the computer being the
same as the DNS name, which is the default.

 Hope someone finds this useful.

VNC 4.0 beta on Trusted Solaris 8

2003-11-12 Thread Bryan Berkowitz
Hi, I'm trying to run vnc on a trusted solaris box, specifically using
x0vncserver.

Here is my output.

$ ./x0vncserver --passwordfile=../.vnc/passwd

Wed Nov 12 15:37:50 2003
 main:XTest extension not present
main:unable to inject events or display while server is grabbed
Using shared memory XImage
 main:Listening on port 5998

Now, when I try to connect from a vncclient (a winxp client in this case) it
prompts for the password, then I get a blank white screen. I imagine this
has something to do with the error message:

main:unable to inject events or display while server is grabbed

What exactly does this mean? I can't find anything about it in the
documentation or mailing list archives.

I tried running the x0vncserver as root but that did not change anything.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: VNC 4.0 beta on Trusted Solaris 8

Sounds like the whole point of Trusted Solaris is to stop things like VNC.
I doubt it will be possible to run an x0vncserver on this box unless you
replace its X server with an ordinary Solaris X server (thereby reducing the
security of the system).

They've taken out the XTest extension from the X server, which means there's
no way for x0vncserver to inject mouse or keyboard events. I wouldn't be
surprised if they've also stopped the XGetImage call from working, so
there's no way to get the screen image.

Cheers

RE: Embed into IE

2003-11-12 Thread Matt Egan
RealVNC comes with an embedded http server that gives you a java viewer.

I believe when it is enabled it listens on port 5800

So using IE you can connect to a server by typing in
http://youhost.ip.here:5800

It works well.

RE: Embed into IE

2003-11-12 Thread Steve Bostedor
The RealVNC server has a java viewer built right into it and runs on
port 5800. If you are using it on *nix on different ports, it's port
580X where X is the display number. The java server is turned on and
off with a registry key HTTPConnect being set to a dword of 1. More
information on this is in the VNC documentation.

One of the many features of VNCScan is that it will export your list of
detected computers to a web page that makes use of this java server on
each computer. You can get VNCScan at http://www.vncscan.com

Re: VNC to Host Behind NAT

2003-11-12 Thread Joe Kexel
Make sure no firewall is running on either machine and test it again. If
you can do a reverse connection, it seems that the host machine is
blocking the incoming connection. VNC is not likely to be the issue. My
experience is it is most always something else. Do you connect properly
with NAT disabled or is VNC still not working at that time?

the host from outside the LAN unless I completely disable NAT. Netopia
tech support says that I have configured the pinholes through NAT
properly and the issue must be with WinVNC. Both the Host and Client
computers are running Windows XP Professional. The client computer only
has VNC viewer installed. If I set the remote machine to Viewer (listen)
I can connect to it from behind the router but so far no luck going in
