I don't know if it the proper way but I used a very nice fume hood. Measured
the metals (high purity), melted them in a quartz crucible, stirred with a
quartz rod, and cast it in a ceramic block with a spiral pattern machined into
it with a ball mill. You don't want to contaminate the mixture with other
metals, etc.

That "Things I Won't Work With" article was about dimethyl cadmium, not
metallic cadmium. Reall Nasty Stuff. Metallic cadmium and cadmium plating has
been used for ages without killing too many people. It's not something to take
lightly, but I've had the pleasure of working around far worse things.

For even more extreme nastiness check out dimethyl mercury... one drop, goes
through rubber gloves like they aren't there, sure-fire rather horrible death.
Derek Lowe's "Things I Won't Work With" series is some of the best reading
out there... Unfortunately, I don't think that he is still doing them. His
old web site has disappeared.

Just checked... Derek is at it again after a two year hiatus... woohoo! He's
my favorite chem-blogger. Something makes me want to play with all the things
he won't work with.

Randy:

I sure hope you are not trying to use 26 ga. telephone wire for the zero
shorting wire. The manual recommends either 14 ga. or 12 ga. solid copper
wire, this is the kind you can get for basic electrical wiring in conduit in
homes, at least in the US. Generically called TW in electrician's
language.

My 3458A reads about -0.20 uv before AutoCal and less than +0.20 uv
after, with the short as described in the manual. You will observe that
the HP/Agilent/Keysight manual for the 3458A does not give any zero
stability specs, at least that I can find.

I have been using the 3458A for nulling my 752A and have had no problems
with my homemade low thermal leads as I described them to you.
Belden/Pomona components. I use 100PLC.

I shorted the input terminals of my HP-3458A with a short lead of copper
wire, Bell telephone wire as recommended in the manual. The reading I get
is around 000.00070 mV, or 0.7 uV with NLPC set to 100. I was trying to
evaluate it's use as a null meter for my Fluke 752A divider. This seems a
little higher than I would expect but no amount of running AUTOCAL or ZERO
changes this amount. Is this considered acceptable?

The usual reason for that is your download speed is slow,
and the download process times out before the entire file
has been downloaded.

You need to try again until you get the full file downloaded.

Hi,

I have largely finished the design but it's designed to support the HP-419A
and Fluke 845A, with an isolation circuit for the HP-419A. Unfortunatley,
I have not had time to finish the implementation (PCB design and build) due
to a heavy work scdhedule over the last year, and its not getting any
better in the near term. I am more than willing to share the design with
you or anyone else that wants it. I can send a set of hand-drawn
schematics of the circuits to anyone who wnats - just send me an e-mail (I
don't have a web site to host the data - I should get one). I have a lot
of suppprting documentation such as LTSpice simulations, technical
articles, etc. also. I can anwer any questions anyone else has on the
design if needed.

Hello,

I note lots of Defence procedures used in their metrology labs still
require a 3458A as a core item, even for more mundane measurements. Defence
seemingly are not switching over to newer voltmeters, or writing out the
need for a 3458A. While defence are still maintaining old platforms it
makes sense to them in keeping the originally specified test equipment in
the relevant procedure - so long as HP keeps supporting the 3458A.

It's an interesting historical confluence: 8.5's are the clippers of
DVMs.

8.5 only makes sense two places: fundamental/high-end metrology

Everybody else are totally fine with 7.5 and very few actually need

The 3458A made it possible to validate the josephson junction as

metrology requirements: Now you can generate any voltage you want
 on demand.

That leaves a theoretical market in basic research, but that's a
very small market which will happily pay a phd-theses for a prototype,

My 732b is fine but its transformer bit the dust before I got it.

Actually, that's probably WHY I got it on fleabay.. its previous owner
changed the battery and still couldn't get it to charge!
So it went on fleabay as 'parts/not working'..
for a price I could afford!

The primary is cooked. Using a fresh battery powers the standard, though,
with a solid 9.9 volts on my junk 3458 for two months.

I just want a transformer for 120V... don't need all the world's voltages.
Since it probably won't be guarded, I would unplug the
732 and go on battery to do readouts to avoid powerline crosstalk problems.

The best of all worlds would be to get the exact, correct transformer.
