Lately they have given in and gone to a WordPress format: http://arxiv.org/ The Wayback machine does not show their older format. I finally found a Theme I can live with: http://demo.studiopress.com/genesis/ I may go hog-wild and substitute blue or aqua for the gray theme on the menu. This company has really good Theme and other templates. Just what you need without stuff you don't need. I tried a dozen others including free ones and commercial samples (with features turned off). Most of them are as ugly internally as they are externally. I do not mind rococo designs or flashy graphics but they get in the way of a serious purpose. They are fine in web sites such as these (showcased by this company): http://www.theeyecandyblog.com/ http://www.cbhutch.com/ I am re-organizing the menus and screens as I do this. I must say, it is a piece of cake working with this. If all else fails you
can resort to old fashioned methods. There does not seem to be a menu item
to change the page footer, so I searched around in the folder for this
Style ("twentyend"), found something called "footer.php" and bashed it.
FTP the new version and Bob's your uncle.
I'll probably wreck something by such methods.
I am working with a local copy of Wordpress, running under Xampp.
I find lots of utility programs to do first things such as making a
separate list of featured articles. The problem is that these utility
programs are written by amateurs with mistakes in them. For example the
instructions one of them -- called PopLists -- says you're supposed to
insert a text widget adding the following to create a list of featured news
items (defined by me), like so:

Use the search (custom google search) field in the search page you
will find them all.
I think the modal window for the results is cumbersome. Better use a
normal page.

Hi Jed, The database/searching is looking good. Have you tried adding full text search? (Searching for "alumina powder" returns no hits, even though some of the PDF's use that term. Extracting the text from the pdf and adding it to the database can be automated.) What database fields are available for the library? If you open the database and ftp/html/php to a number of trusted developers, you could probably get some really interesting results... Some additional fields that could be useful: Full text extracted from source Language Citations (list of references that ) Followers (list of people who like the paper) Discussion or wiki for the paper (vbulletin style?) Format(s) (HTML, PDF, PPT, etc) Some kind of Rating system Major categories (Ni-H, Pd, bubble, etc.) Maybe add a discussion or request section where users/researchers can put in what would be helpful to them.. Little changes like adding a COUNT(author) link that would display the other (N) papers written by any given author.. just takes a good php developer a few minutes to add each feature.. Developers who produce custom query/search pages could run them by you and the good ideas could be merged into the final product.. (As far as WordPress goes.. I'm not a huge fan, but its cheap and the plug-ins are plentiful.) - Brad

I have to figure out a few more features of WordPress, such as how to have older Featured news items with their own listing. I assume it has something to do with Categories. It looks like I have to manually change the dates on the news items (Posts). I will clean up the pages and throw away some of the clutter if I do this. If anyone would like to assist I would be happy to give you a name and password. I have turned off the Comments in all sections, because I don't care what the unwashed masses think about cold fusion. I have heard it all before. However, if anyone would like to slave away manually copying Posts from the present pages and entering dates into them, you are more than welcome. It would be good if you know something about WordPress. Mind you, I don't know the first thing about it, but you hum a few bars I can fake it. - Jed

Looks good! I especially like the library, what software do you use for that? I would drop the "/wordpres/" part of your url and I wouldn't worry to much about themes. The theme of the day changes faster than you can keep up with anyway. Content is king. Cheers, Bastiaan.
