Re: OSX install woes

2003-04-17 Thread JamesRosemary Rutherford

To all those helpful people out there.

I have had a similar problem and I thought it may be my monitor.

I have a 3 year old iMac (400Mhz G3 slot CD/DVD) (actually bought in
Canada).

I thought the monitor had failed.
I have just replaced the hard disk and was installing OSX when the
installation stalled (spinning sunrays) and the screen had a band
across it
of like cross hatching. I turned the machine off, waited a while
turned it
back on but only got a black screen. When I turn this off, I get a
glimpse
of the Apple logo on a greenish screen for about a quarter of a second.

I did not do any firmware updates.

I asked an Apple centre what the problem may be and they said a logic board
or analogue board or CRT failure.

Could it be if I install OS9, do the firmware updates then install OSX I
will not have to lug the iMac from Karratha to Perth for nothing?

Thanks in advance.

James Rutherford

You are lucky it still starts up. Before you do any thing else. Start
up from system 9 and do the firmware update that is on the OSX disc.
I'll repeat that.
Before you do any thing else. Start up from system 9 and do the
firmware update that is on the OSX disc.

We have had two imacs that staff have upgraded without doing the
firmware update that will not boot up at all. The unis and repair shops
will tell you horror stories about new motherboards to fix this, or
swapping hard discs and motherboards with other imacs.
look at the apple web site and at the wamug archives for more info.
I could not get any of our imacs to startup after the first time they
booted into 10.2 the light comes on for about 10 secs and then goes
off. We tried pram resets, swapping hds and motherboards. Could not get
it to start.
This is poorly documented at apple. Just tells you to do the firmware
update before you install 10.2.
The 10.2 installation checks for the firmware updates on all macs
except for crt imacs. The readme on the discs tell you to do the
firmware update, but how many of us actually read this.

I typed boot return and hey presto, OSX launches and runs normally.

My question is.. how do I get it to jump past the command line stuff?

Attempted solutions;
1. erased disk and reinstalled from scratch
2. downloaded firmware update 1.2
could not install firmware update. Requires system 9.2 (classic)
which doesn't come with OSX (I am updating from 8.5)
3. searched apple support site for info but gave up after half an hour

Any ideas?

The simplest way to test this theory is to boot of an OS9 CD. If the
works, the answer is yes. If it doesn't then it's likely that indeed you

It's possible that the machine's firmware may have been modified such
that the screen doesn't display properly even when booted from the 9
disk.

There was a report on Macintouch that if you option-boot the machine
(holding down the option key while booting, until presented with a
list of bootable disks), and then reset the machine (without
selecting any of the bootable disks) you may be able to recover it.
Use at your own risk.

Re: toilet map doesn't support Macs

2003-04-17 Thread Kaye and Geoff

This is not good enough for publicly funded web resources. I sent an
email and also suggested they refer their web designer to Web
Accessibility Initiative (WAI) http://www.w3.org/WAI/

I just tried it with Mac (OS8.6) and Netscape 4.5 - it works well
enough to locate public toilets in our district. A couple of pictures
slightly overlapped the text, but the maps, zooming, and showing the
toilets all worked.

Any problems with Mac/Netscape probably arise from their choice of
MapInfo as the engine - it may use IE/Microsoft special features in
the HTML code.

Monitor Resolutions

2003-04-17 Thread Matthew Healey

Hi all,

I am trying to find a way to force BW G3's and Graphite G4's to boot
up with a preset resolution on the graphics card without a monitor
connected.

I have a KVM for four computers and if I want each machine to boot with
the correct video settings ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) I have to switch the KVM to
that machine and then boot it, switch to the next machine and boot
that... etc.

Is there an adapter that I can set to the above resolution so the Mac
thinks a monitor is connected and sets the graphics card to the correct
setting? Preferably VGA to VGA.

The setup took 2 mins to unpack thje keyboard and mouse and insert

both the keyboard and mouse and pair to them.

OK so who wants one or is it two you get a multi-button optical

You also get a book for Windows XP users on how to get the thing to
work . it's a shame Mac users don't get a book because you don't
need one. The silly thing is this keyboard was made expressly for Win
XP users but the setup on a Mac really is just as a simple as
described. The very hardest thing was opening the battery door on the
mouse.

. and you get a Microsoft USB Bluetooth adapter which I haven't

Re: Bluetooth keyboard/mouse

2003-04-17 Thread Keith Palmer, Zytech
We're trying to get bulk pricing rates but at this point in time it
looks like around $350 but that does include a shiny box, keyboard,
Bluetooth adapter, 4 x AA batteries, another dingly-dangly that I
didn't bother with and mouse. I think the mouse by itself is going to
retail at $150 so it's so...so value.

Having played with it for a while now, at this stage IntelliType Pro
3.1 doesn't see the Bluetooth keyboard so you can't go in and modify
the keys like you can on other MS keyboards. So all the little silver
buttons don't do anything yet but I'm sure this will be addressed in
the next software release.

MS haven't addressed this keyboard at the Mac market at all, it's
positioned to be something really neat for the XP crowd who go through
the process of installing Bluetooth, the dingle-dangles and setting
everything up. It just so happens that both the keyboard and mouse are
totally plug'n'play on a Mac.

Yet another example of just how wonderful OS X is .. I've just off
the phone to a friend who does presentations and he can't wait to get
hold of at least the mouse. He couldn't believe that you didn't have
to point it at a receiver or that it didn't matter if people got in the
way of you and your presentation.

For me, it's just nice to be completely free of cables. If I want some
space I can just pick up my keyboard and park it anywhere I want.

The downside is that you'll always need a couple of AA batteries close
by just in case your run flat.

I've included the MS info sites (with pics) - the keyboard and mouse
are actually dark metallic blue - much bluer in real life than is
depicted on the MS website -

If you sign a privacy undertaking I will forward a list or give you

So in summary I cannot say how and I cannot say if we got hold of

Hi Ray

You don't want to install FreePPP unless you want to cause a lot more
issues with your machine! I would grab a copy of some scripts which

FreePPP was fine with older systems, before say about OS9,..now it
