*** Intego Internet Security Professional Pack***
Email me for more info, and I'm open to offers on this one. Buy a couple of
things and I might even give it away! :o) (Hey I'm feeling generous) :o)

So maybe what you were looking for wasn't on the list,...well email me what
you're after because I also deal with a lot of the standard suppliers and I
can get a lot of things. And if I can't,..well I will do what I can to get
it,..or at the very least help you find someone who does! :o)

Thanks for looking! Have a good day!

US Zip codes

2003-08-07 Thread Peter Sealy
I saw on MacInTouch [Tues] that OS X has an invisible file of all the
US postal Zip codes at usr/share/misc/zipcodes. The file is only about
800kb but that may be important to some people if you are running short
of disk space. The question is whether this file is vital to the
operation of OS X or can we dispense with it. I assume it is used for
such things as autofill for US residents but it seems to me to be
pointless for non US users. Any ideas if we can delete it?

My _strong_ recommendation with Mac OS X is not to delete components
of it unless one understands the full implications of doing so. It
may be possible to say that something like this is _unlikely_ to be
needed here but who's to say that this file isn't referred to by
applications or other components of the operating system?

If your disk is so full that 800 KB is a cause for concern then you
will have other problems (for example, with virtual memory swap
space) and you should simply get a larger hard disk. I thnk 60 GB is
about the smallest you can buy nowadays, which should provide you
plenty of space.

iMac wanted

2003-08-07 Thread Lloyd White
I have a relative who wants an iMac, preferably slot loading. Just wants
to use it for word-processing and email. Would need a suitable printer as
well if possible.
She is looking for cheap and reliable. Probably OS 9 would be suitable.

Anything out there?

I would sell her mine but I am not ready to upgrade just yet.

You could try Charles Taylor at:

He always has a good selection of second hand Macs for sale at a
reasonable price.

Charles recently opened a small shop on The Crescent, Midland
opposite the cinemas.

Dead Lombard Help

2003-08-07 Thread Antony N. Lord
I have a Lombard 400 here. It looks like it copped a surge
(lightning) a while back as the built-in ethernet died. To get around
this I am using an WaveLAN card.

Since then other things have gone bad.

Problem one :

I get an odd message at startup : Startup built in memory test has
detected a problem with cache memory. Please contact a service
technical for assistance.

The machine passes all cache / memory tests in TechTool 3.0.9

If I try using G3G4 Cache Profiler (which I have used on other
machines in the past to disable conflicting caches with processor
upgrades) I get the message AutoCacheDetectType() failed to detect
the type of SRAMs possibly indicating bad SRAMs.

If you restart the machine it chimes but doesn't come up - you have
to press the power manager reset button at the back.

Anyone got any clues?

Problem two :

One column of the keyboard seems to have failed (9/o/l/.) - as far as
I can tell its the actual ribbon itself. If you take the keyboard out
and bend the cable it works but fails when you return it to the
installed position.

Anyone got a junk bronze keyboard?

Things I'm thinking of trying

* Have a look at the mobo - if its anything like most PowerMacs there
are MOV devices on the the ethernet port. Replacing them may
re-enable built-in ethernet.

* If the cache problems are mobo related (not processor) I might drop
the processor in my 333 Lombard. I assume the processor is removable
(I have the service manual around here somewhere!)

Any help would be most appreciated.

Cheers, Antony.

Actually, I do have a dead Personal Laserwriter LS -- but as it fails to
power up when plugged in, it may be of dubious value to you.

Anyone else it for other spare parts is quite welcome to it. (I have been
ordered to get rid of any dead things that are larger than a keyboard.

SCSI (MD50) to D-SUB 25 pin Female SCSI adapter cable.

2003-08-07 Thread Douglas Sheerer

Can anyone help?

I have recently bought a USB to SCSI (MD50) adapter in order to
primarily utilize my SCSI Epson Filmscan 200, 35mm Scanner on my new
17 Powerbook running OSX.
I had to get the USB / SCSI (MD50) adapter from a supplier in NSW as
I couldn't find a local supplier.

I was hoping also to be able to connect my 2 x 18 gb SCSI external
Hard drives which are a mix of as I understand it SCSI I and SCSII
types. All were connected to my old G3 MiniTower and worked perfectly.

The problem is that I have all the convertor cables for my existing
peripherals but don't have the vital one to connect to the (MD50)
SCSI end of the USB adapter I purchased.

So what I need is a cable which will connect to pinned male MD50 SCSI
end of the USB adapter and to the D-SUB 25 pin Female SCSI on the
scanner. Sounds confusing ??? Sure is.

This is a common problem with Lombards

You may be able to disable the cache via software.

You are on digest mode.

It just takes a little while to filter through the system.
Additionally, if your inbox is filling up, perhaps you should invest
some time in learning about mail filters. They are very useful
features.

Re: US Zip codes

2003-08-07 Thread Peder Kristensen
Peter,

If you want to 'remove unwanted files' to save space, then you could try
Delocalizer - you can download this utility from:
http://software.bombich.com/local.html

Basically it can remove all non-American English localization resource
files that you request. The space saving can be much more than the 800Kbs of
ziptcodes.

As always, backup your system before you run this hack.

Cheers,
Peder

#1 when a machine is thought to be surge damaged, back up the HDD ASAP

Already done. System has frequent Retrospect backups.

#2 Save for a new machine.

A replacement has already been selected. We're waiting for the G5 to arrive...

A power surge is only a suggested cause - none of the 12 other
machines (or ethernet devices) have been affected. Vaporized ethernet
ports are fairly indicative of this though...

(I have been nitten by
this with a server that had its network card blown, replace the network card
all good, 9 months later, server crashed all 4 HDDS and lost all the data.
luckily I had backups).

Its hard to draw parallels like that. Odds are without the blown /
replaced NIC you still might have suffered a quadruple HD failure.

Once the machine is replaced I'll get the Lombard on the workbench
and take the magi-lamp / contact cleaner / soldering iron / big
hammer to it.

Cheers, Antony.

Assitance with testing a web page built on a PC (for Macintosh compatibility)...

2003-08-07 Thread Mark Scholmann
Hello,

I am asking for assistance from Macintosh users who can visit a page, and
inform me of any display issues they may experience.

My name is Mark Scholmann, and I am with Lotterywest (previously Lotteries
Commission). We recently re-launched our web site which worked well on
PC's, but had some serious problems with Macintosh computers. Although, we
have attempted some fixes, it appears that they do not solve all variations
of OS / Browser combinations. We do not have any Macintosh computers and
can not currently purchase or hire one.

*** Warning! I have had feedback by some Macintosh users that our pages
have crashed their computers! Please view after saving critical work.

Two current web site pages are -
1. http://www.lotterywest.wa.gov.au/corporate/grantsguide/guideline.html
2. http://www.lotterywest.wa.gov.au/corporate/grantsguide/guid_001.html

A current web site test page -
3.
http://www.lotterywest.wa.gov.au/corporate/grantsguide/guid_001_test2.html

A newly built test page is -
4. http://www.lotterywest.wa.gov.au/test_page1.html

There should be a navigation javascript operating on the left side. The
forth page is a dummy page, and even though the links may be active, they
are not intended as such.

I am looking for any comments/suggestions on how these pages appear or
react on your computer + browser + OS combination.

If you could copy and paste the client data table at the top of the 4th
test page, it may help in providing details of your set up.
