Garage Band Re: Meeting Notes (while still at the meeting.)

2004-04-07 Thread Mark Secker

Matt Healey then showed off Garage Band using a USB (piano) Keyboard.
(Kindly borrowed off Peter Botman. Sells from Kosmic in Osborne Park for
$99.) GarageBand being part of iLife '04. (Retails for $79 from your
favourite Apple supplier.)
By using the USB keyboard you can play musical notes and tunes which then
get added to your track. Once you are happy with it you can then add another
instrument by changing your selection.

and better yet if keyboard skills (the musical type) are not your
strongest suite then the MIDI keyboard entered data can be
corrected, changed, and totally recreated in the edit/notes
window. As a lot of the loops are MIDI sequences you can edit them
the same way to create new original parts - great if you happen to
struggle with creating usable bass or drum lines.

It comes with many sounds pre built

in (you can add more by purchasing the GarageBand Jam Pack for $158). You
can then build up your musical template and have layer after layer of
different instruments.

On my website (see .sig) there are the first two tracks that I
created when I loaded up and tested Garargeland - only the last 2
mixes of the second song has anything else but the originally
supplied loops ( the later having some vocal some samples from an
anime DVD) and these barely even touch on the HUGE range of sounds
that you get right out of the box.

as a bonus if you download the Apple SoundTrack Utility (Apple Loops
SDK) program you can create your own audio loops from samples and
any other audio files you have (must be in .aiff format only so may
pay to get QuickTime pro)

You can also export it to iTunes (as an mp3) once you are happy with your
compilation and share it with the world.
Matt played one of the demos to give an idea of what can be accomplished.
For best performance you need a G4 500-600MHz or better.
So you don't necessarily have to have a lot of musical talent, but you can
certainly have a lot of fun!!

this is the most addictive software since Bryce... BUT a word from
the wise - get your self a good pair of headphones (preferably closed
shell) that you can wear for a couple of hours straight because while
you might find it engrossing to listen to the buzzes, squeaks, beeps
and bangs as you pick and arrange the parts of your creative opus
your flatmate/partner/spouse/pets/cohabitants probably will not.

Print margins

2004-04-07 Thread Mervyn Giuliana Bond
Further to my postings of 31/3/04 and 2/4/04 I located (searched
gimp), an entry by Neil Blake 19/3/03. I visited the local CUPS site
and located the Epson C61 printer but under the configure and modify
buttons I could not locate a way of modifying the printer margins.

Do I need to install additional software, such as a gimp print
driver, to access such a facility or am I not looking in the correct
spot?

Assistance appreciated.

If you were doing any audio activity like recording or live broadcast
then the Rally Radio Group recommend Snakes, last year the studio team
went through 5Kgs in 4 days (mind you some were there for 24 hours a day
5 days, so it may have involved all meals being Snakes)

Personally if some sort of dip (and you can make a nice one from
condensed milk and powdered French onion soup) then a nice water cracker
pref with cracked pepper

This is true, because FTP has been giving me problems (not my first
choice of words) since install Panther. To be honest though, between
filling the mirror up again, getting ozmac.com mail sorted out, making
sure the members site is progressing, fixing PITA DNS problems and
hoping the box doesn't get hacked and fixing security holes in rsync, I
haven't really had time to play with the FTP server.

If you really really really NEED FTP, let me know and I will try to
devote some time to it. Otherwise HTTP and rsync (for some modules) is
working just fine.

is probably the best (read worst) I've encountered

Today I tried to set up an account with Citibank for their advertised
Online Cash Manager for my son Matt who has just had an 18th birthday.

You can only apply and transact one of these accounts online but the
tradeoff is a 5.4% interest rate.

The problem is, that each time you attempt the online application you
can only get about 75% through the process before encountering a blank
screen. After 3 attempts I decided to phone Citibank direct.

They asked if I had a Mac and then told me that you can't apply for an
account if you use a Mac. I asked them if they could mail out an
application but I was told you can only apply online and before we did

65,000,000.00 which I inherited from my late father. This funds was
accumulated from royalties paid to my father as compensation by the
oil firms located in our area as a result of oil presence on our land
which hamper agriculture which is our major source of livelihood.
Unfortunately my father died from protracted diabetes. But before his
he called my attention and informed me that he lodged some funds with
a security firm and
Security Code Number was also revealed to me, he then advised me to
look for a reliable business partner abroad, who will assist me in
investing the funds in a lucrative business as a result of economic
instability in Nigeria.
So this is the main reason why I am contacting you for us to move
this funds from the security firm to any country of your choice for
investment purposes. So I will like you to be the
person taking delivery, so that the funds can be moved in your name
and particulars to any country of your choice where it will be claimed
and invested. Hence my father have had intimated the security firm
personnel that the owner of the consingment is his foreign partner
whose particulars will be forwarded to the firm when due.
But I will guide you accordingly. As soon as the fund reaches, I will
then come over to meet you in person, so that we can discuss
physically on Investment entials. Based on this instance I and my
family have unanimously decided to give you 20% of the total funds, 2%
for charity homes and 3% for expenses, which may arise during the
transaction, fax and phone bills inclusive. The balance of 75% you
will invest and manage for my family. I hereby guarantee you that this
is not government funds, it is not drug funds and it is not funds
from arms deal.
I will give you all proof of deposit and existence of funds once
urged and fully satisfied with your capability and honesty. I hope
this will be the beginning of a prosperous relationship between my
family and your family.
Nevertheless if you are for any reason not interest, kindly inform
meimmediately so that I will look for another contact.

LOL yes - the Nigerian scam - it's been around
for a while... a long while in Internet terms and people have fallen
for it. Ther is even a group in the UK that runs a counter scam on the
scammers involving inviting them in to countries that have good
enforcement against such fraud...

Has anyone seen anything like this before? It's my first piece of
spam and I feel so proud! Obviously someone spent some time writing
the essay. It's a real tear Jerker. Anyone interested in the
offer? :P
I don't know how it's clung to me?

First I'd like to point out that while this is the first for you, it's
not for the rest of us :-)

Secondly, the message you included comes in many and varied guises and
some go as far as to include links to photos, phone numbers, news
reports, etc.

So, please don't send any spam to the list. Don't respond, don't reply,
delete the message - after perhaps reporting it to spamcop - and move
on.

PS. You can tell from my tone of voice that I'm not really impressed.
This is not a reflection on Christian, but more on the wasted time,
effort, bandwidth etc. that spam is taking in our lives. There is little
light at the end of the tunnel, but you get that...

PPS. There are many and varied ideas doing the rounds to combat spam,
legal, software, authentication, restrictions etc. All of these ideas
have problems. You can read a pretty good explanation here:

http://www.colinfahey.com/spam_topics/spam_the_phenomenon.htm

BUT BEWARE, while the explanation of why spam fighting is doomed, the
author goes on to propose a solution that really doesn't work, so you
can feel free to ignore that part of the article...

MULTIFUNCTION PRINTERS

2004-04-07 Thread Marcus
Would anyone care to comment on the HP2510 multifunction printer,
copier, scanner and fax combination with Ethernet and Wi-Fi built in to
it.
I would use it for home office and have early model G3 and latest model
iBook G4 on wi-fi to broadband. I ma using Panther OS10 on both macs.
If you do have one is it quiet? I am fed up with the noisy Epsom C60
printer. If you do not recommend the HP2510 then please suggest a quiet
and efficient alternative
Many thanks
