Apple Updates Airport Extreme Base Station
From MacRumours: 'Alongside PowerBook and iBook releases, Apple also provided some updates to the Airport Extreme Base Station hardware as well as Airport software. Airport Software 3.4 is available in Software Update which offers: -Improved antenna output control. -Enhanced logging from your base station which is compatible with syslog. -Performance improvements for WPA security implementations. Meanwhile, Apple also introduced an updated Airport Extreme Base Station which offers support for Power over Ethernate and UL 2043 fire safety standard support -- both features which would allow users to place the unit in more locations, according to MacCentral: With the ability to install an AirPort Extreme Base Station anywhere an Ethernet cable can reach comes another change -- the new device supports UL 2043, a fire safety standard for devices that operate in air-handling spaces, such as the area above a suspended ceiling in a classroom or office -- likely spots for a network installer to install a base station unobtrusively'. --- Richard Kay Fremantle Western Australia

Setting up Network printer help
Hi All! I have a problem getting a Windows ME (ok, you can stop laughing now) box to see a Laserwriter 16/600 PS printer on a network. Here is the setup: ME Box -- 10BaseT Hub (which uplinks into ADSL Router) -- links into uplink port on another 10BaseT hub on other side of office -- 16/600PS. I have a beige G3 sitting on the same hub as the printer, and can print no problems. The 16/600 is set to print via LPR and has a 192.168.0.32 address. The router is 192.168.0.1, ME box 192.168.0.2, and the G3 is 192.168.0.3. Once I turn off the uplink the the G3 hub, I have no internet, so I know the network is okay in one direction. If I enable web sharing on the G3, the ME box does open the default page via http://192.168.0.3/default.html, so I know traffic does go in the other direction. When I go to install the printer on the ME box, it tells me the it can't find the location 192.168.0.32 and goes into offline mode, saying there could be numerous problems with the network but has no idea which one :-) And I have printed this morning with the G3, so I do know the printer is working. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Seeya Rod!

Thank you to all those who responded to my request to check out the map reading. You have given me the confidence to now approach the relevant department and ask them to make access across platform. Merv For those of you who have been following the topic, the reason you are unable to access the site is in simple terms is the page and the application is founded on a PC software i.e. Mapinfo. You will find this application at most of the local govt. It was designed initially for in house use but someone has been trying to make further mileage by selling it as intermaps. Re: Reducing pic size
Glad that helped. One other thing if you're using graphic converter - in the preferences, under Browser:General Settings, under the Preview heading, there is a check box for: create automatically with three sub-options: Add to file Temporary for locked files Always temporary I'm not sure which is the as-installed default but if you have the Add to file selected then if you are browsing in Graphic converter and browse the folder containing your cut-down image (ie just saved without resource fork) it will create a preview and add it to the file - thus increasing the file size again. When I'm working with images for the web, where I want to keep the minimum file size, I use the Always temporary option - the previews are created on-the-fly but not added to the file. The downside is that browsing is slower as the previews are re-created every time you browse a folder. When working with small web images this is fine; if I'm working with larger original files, I change to Add to file while first browsing so that the previews are created and added which significantly speeds up subsequent browsing. (But don't forget to change your preferences back before you idly browse your web image folder!!) You also have preferences under Save: General Settings regarding whether the resource fork is added or a preview created - these are overridden by the settings you choose when you save for web, but if you later opened the file and did a normal save you would add a resource fork with icon preview if you have those preferences set. Be aware that often, the previews form part of the resource fork. As such, they do /not/ contribute to the size of the file when downloaded via the web (unless you make a StuffIt archive out of the file), because the download does not include the resource fork. This phenomenon is evident if you view file sizes using the Terminal (e.g. `ls -l myfile.gif`). This applies to Photoshop-generated files, at least, so I assume it's the same with Graphic Converter. Although there /are/ some cases where the previews may form part of the data fork, that usually only applies to non-bitmap formats such as EPS of PDF.

On Tue, 2004-04-20 at 09:17, Rod wrote: I have noticed that when the computer is started, the windows network login screen comes up and cancel is hit. Would this be turning off certain networking functions within Windows? Yes. It'll disable anything that needs SMB authentication, AFAIK, which is most windows networking stuff like file browsing and printing. Try logging in normally instead of cancelling. Also: have you tried pinging the printer from the Windows box? Do 'Start - Run' and type in 'command', then hit enter. When the command line window comes up (it's like the Terminal in OSX, but really limited and generally poor), type in 'ping 192.168.0.23' (or whatever your printer's IP is). You should see something like: Pinging 192.168.0.23 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.0.23: bytes=32 time10ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.0.23: bytes=32 time10ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.0.23: bytes=32 time10ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.0.23: bytes=32 time10ms TTL=64 ... in which case, you know your Windows box can at least see and talk to the printer at the lower networking layers. For that matter, though... do you know if the printer even supports SMB printing? Many do not, and I'd be surprised if an Apple printer did. Perhaps you need to set the printer up as an LPR or UNIX printer (what Apple calls an IP printer, to my never-ending annoyance) under WinME. I can't help you on specifically how to do that, unfortunately as I only use Win2k and I don't use that much. You may also be able to set it up as a JetDirect printer (_real_ IP Printing, ie raw TCP stream, usually to port 9100). Again, I don't know about specifics of how to do this under WinME. Do you have drivers installed for the printer under WinME? Are there drivers available? If the answer to both of those is no, try going to adobe.com and downloading the latest Adobe PostScript printer driver. It provides some nice generic PPDs and may, depending on the OS version, make it easier to set up a network printer too. Craig Ringer

Hi James and Rod, Yes, there's two levers, but there doesn't seem to be anything happening when I work them. There's also a flashing battery sign on the top menu bar with a red cross through it when running on AC. T Tom Lewis, in beautiful Jervis Bay, NSW, Oz

Hi James and Rod, Yes, there's two levers, but there doesn't seem to be anything happening when I work them. You should be able to move the lever out until it's a little past 90degrees to the front edge of the keyboard. Not much force is required, just the tip of a finger should do it. As you reach the 90 degree mark the battery will slide out about a centimetre from the case. Of course it's possible your machine has broken levers or something. There's also a flashing battery sign on the top menu bar with a red cross through it when running on AC. Probably means the battery is dead. Re: LOading Omnipage SE
I've experienced exactly the same - haven't heard of one yet that has worked. I have Omnipage SE working, but only after figuring out that it wasn't an OS X program at all (despite being bought as such, and with no indication on the CD or documentation). I was unable to install it as a Classic program from OS X, but had to reboot into OS9 first, then install into the OS9 application directory. Once installed, it works from Classic with no problem. I was really annoyed by it - I expected an X program, or, at least, one that would install without the hassles it gave. Luckily we're on an eMac that is still OS9 bootable. The program *only* works in Windows 95, nothing else (it actually comes up with an error that says you need Windows 95, even though I'm running ME!). I think we might be on the right track with the networking issue. Thanks to Onno and Craig for their help so far! BTW, I can ping the printer, so I suspect something to do with Windows networking. Due to some recent trades we have many 2nd hand G4 towers starting at $500 (inc keyboard and mouse, Screen extra) Much faster than a iMac and more expandable. Re: New PowerBooks At AppleStore Too!
Yep ... same form factor. This is probably the last or second last upgrade before something new and radical comes out as far as the design and form factor of the iBooks is concerned. I have heard rumours that the next iBook form factor might be a combination of aluminium edging with polycarbonate facing. It'd be neat if the polycarbonate faces could 'snap' off like mobile phone covers can ... so you could customise your iBook with a variety of different colours or replace badly scratched surfaces with new ones. Probably a lot more mileage from the PowerBooks as the aluminium style is more recent. Having said that there are also rumours that the G5 laptop range may be produced using black carbon fiber ... although at present I hear this stuff is still pretty pricey. Who knows. At least something to look forward to. --- Richard Kay Fremantle Western Australia On 20/04/2004, at 10:10 AM, Greg Hosking wrote: are these in the same cases as the previous models? ta g SNIP

Heheheheheheheh I think to hide the numerous ventilation slots these babies are going to require even with the cooling technology that, if memory serves me correctly, has been developed by 4 guys at Stanford. Carbon nanotubes and some kind of coolant? My aging memory is failing me. In the article with BBC News Online, Apple's Greg Joswiak recently refused to speculate about the target for a PowerBook G5 introduction, but did state that it will be some time before that processor [G5] will be in a notebook. He also pointed to the long lead time that it took for the G4 to make it into portables when it was first introduced. --- Richard Kay Fremantle Western Australia On 20/04/2004, at 5:38 PM, Reg Whitely wrote: Richard wrote: Having said that there are also rumours that the G5 laptop range may be produced using black carbon fiber ... although at present I hear this stuff is still pretty pricey. Re: cost of older Macs
I knew someone who paid $1000 for a Performa 5400/160 but it did have a lot of floppy disk based software and a TV Tuner. To add further insult it was advertised as running 9.1 but only had 8.5. Sadly these new users forgot to do research also, They informed me a little later when it needed repairs!

Hi All! This I have done and the printer does ping back at me. The printer is already setup for LPR printing (that is why it has an IP address, rather than just using Appletalk). Here lies the problem. The Adobe software requires the printer to be seen by the PC before it will install. Not that it matters, as ME has the postscript drivers built in for a whole range of Apple laserwriters, including the 16/600 PS. On further research, 95/98/ME don't support IP printing out of the box. ME comes with some IPP driver that installs off the CD, which allows Internet printing (). I figure this has something to do with network printing, but the instructions and description Microsoft give are a bit vague. When setting up the printer driver via the network option in ME, you should be able to put in http://192.168.0.32:631/Darkside, where the IP address is the printer location on the network, not sure what the 631 port is, and Darkside is the printer name (affectionally given by the Mac haters at work!). Of course ME still can't see the printer, and I'm not sure if the laswerwriter can understand the address anyway. After googling, Port 631 is Internet Printing Protocol, which I have a pretty good idea it is either being blocked by Nortons or is not recognised by the Laserwriter. Updating the OS at this point is not an option, unless some kind soul would like to donate a ridgy-didge copy of Windows 2000 or XP (not sure how XP would run on a 600 Celery anyway). The only other option is to pull the printer off the network and connect it directly to the PC via a parallel cable. It stops me printing, but I have another laserwriter that needs resurrecting, which can be connected directly to my Mac at work. Any ideas before I do the inevitable? Seems pointless having a network printer and connecting it via a parallel cable to one machine! Seeya Rod!
