MacOS X 10.3.8 glitch
This is a very minor problem, but a slight nuisance nonetheless. Ever since updating to 10.3.8 (using the combo updater after checking permissions) I find that the Software Update button in About This Mac is permanently greyed out and inactive. Likewise, the Sofware Update... option under the Apple Menu, although not grey, does nothing. Thankfully I can still use Software Update from System Preferences, and it still launches on schedule, otherwise I would upgrade it from minor nuisance to major problem. 10.3.8 Update and Customised Login Screen
We have found that if you have customised the login screen and you update to 10.3.8 using either combo update or the delta update that you loose that custom window and get the default one back. I am sure this does not affect all of you but thought I would warn anyway. Here at Curtin with out legal screen being that one it is a problem. a little ot, palm III
Hi my son has been using a palm III for a little while now, and after a nasty accident on his bike, he has managed to mangle the screen. The palm was a second hand purchase and he doesn't really want to buy a new palm as all he really uses in the notes/addresses and calendar function. He doesn't have a mobile phone (which would be the obvious place to put this info) because I wont fund it!!, so the question is, can the screen be easily obtained, or does anyone have an old palm device they would like to sell cheap.

In general you can consider such files not to be openable documents. The specific case of 'winmail.dat' is a Microsoft Outlook quirk. It likes to send its attachments in a special format called MS-TNEF to other computers, and often just *assumes* you're running Outlook and can open it. The user is not expect to ever see a 'winmail.dat' as Outlook is supposed to decode it for you. This is actually a configuration problem on the sender's computer, but few seem to bother to fix it. If you get a winmail.dat file over email, chances are it's a TNEF formatted attachment or bundle of attachments and you should be able to extract it like a zip file with the right tools. However, other .dat files typically have nothing to do with this and could be anything, or nothing useful at all. -- Craig Ringer

Safari seems nice and quick after the above actions, I haven't reinstalled Firefox to compare, but it is *definitely* quicker at heavy sites. Could Safari have grown bogged-down over 12 months despite updates? Could the cache etc have grown large and unwieldy? I didn't see anything mentioned about Safari in the 10.3.8 Update. soapbox I often find the fastest OS is the freshest one. I am usually not too excited about Backup/Recovery tools that encourage the user to backup entire installations in a grab-all strategy. Important to me is knowing which files need backing up and which require re-installation for best results. This allows me to decide on and plan recoveries easily, usually resulting in quite simple solutions. If available, I restore from a backed-up fresh installation, which saves a little time, otherwise simply install THEN customise. I don't feel the compulsion to customise OSX greatly, so there isn't tonnes to do after a fresh install anyway, aside from applications that is. Some applications can be included into the 'fresh' OS if it does indeed save time. Much software is dynamic and being updated regularly anyway, so new copies will be most likely be best. We have broadband which makes a difference here. A well planned fresh start beats un-tested recoveries any day. It requires less trust in things you cannot control too, my favourite ;) /soapbox Cheers Paul

Re: bluetooth phones and macs
Chris, not sure what happened with your setup, but went through the same steps with my K700i and desktop, and it had the option to isync when I paired it. Going to isync, it took about 6 seconds to show up, and gives me a dialogue box ready to sync with my contacts and calendar. So, the K700i definitely is able to work with isync. It just didn't in that instance. More confusion... On 14/2/05 4:56 PM, Chris Burton [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks to Rob and Rob and Rod for the links. Hard Drive space disapearance
Hi All Just emailing because as of last night my iBook is losing HD space. It got down to zero KB and I had a word doc to save so I deleted 400MB of space but as I did it was chewed up instantly. I then attacked my music direct from the itunes folder and did a secure delete which liberated 250MB of space so I finally could save. Today I was using it and deleted 35Mb of files which actually used a further 35MB of HD after emptying the trash. A few more deletions and all of the sudden I have only 80MB available. It had 3.4 GB 2 days ago. Any ideas where its going? It's only happened since 10.3.8 and this laptop doesn't like it. I've already had a screen resolution bug which I think had something to do with the Ati Driver updates. Not having much luck with this Clamshell but would like its space back. Thankful for any assistance. Regards Christian

This might be due to a memory leak: a situation where software keeps trying to grab more and more memory. When the computer runs out of RAM, it allocates virtual memory by using files on the disk as fake RAM. To find out if this is the culprit, go to the Finder and choose 'Go to Folder' from the 'Go' menu. Enter /var/vm and press OK. You will then see the folder. Put the folder into 'List' view (or do 'Get Info...') to find out how much disk space it is using. If it is 3.4Gb, then you know where you disk space has gone! This could be resolved by rebooting. But the culprit application might strike again! Further diagnosis (e.g. to track down the culprit) can be done using the Activity Monitor (Applications Utilities).
