Tricking the 580 and OS8 Followup
Hi WAMUGgers As a followup to my post yesterday, many thanks to all of you who responded. I went back to the school yesterday afternoon and the teacher told me she didn't want several of the programs installed onone of the 580s so I deleted them and decided to install OS8.1. This it did quite nicely although now it has only 91mb of disk space left. I then tried running the CDROMs but the computer then told me that Mac Start will not load. Either the program is corrupt or it is not suitable for this type of computer. I think, as Onno says, It's trying to tell me that it's not a PowerPC. Thanks Jon for alerting me to that little oversight. Thanks Greg, Bob and Daniel for your advice and help re using a Zip drive. I think that is a good idea. Then we can load all the best compatible software on it and give the computer a new lease of life. Ah yes but we have 2 580s to contend with, perhaps we can appleTalk them. I've left the other one with 7.6.1 so I think it's safe ;-) regards Reg

Basically like most buses it's limited by the lowest common denominator (ie the slowest/oldest device you've got attached). Try the wikipedia (a free, on-line encyclopedia) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCSI At high enough switching (ie data) rates, wires (ie SCSI cables) behave like transmission lines. Such lines need to be terminated correctly to prevent signals being reflected from the end of the line, resulting in interference and loss of data signal amongst the resultant noise. Transmission line theory took me about a semester to understand :) Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge http://public.xdi.org/=Shayfnord http://sungroper.asn.au/

Mail problem
Hi,when I open 'mail' I do not get my mailboxes listed down the side of the pane. I thought it must be a setting I had wrong in preferences but I cannot see any such setting. Can anyone help please? Mac [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Mail problem
Have you tried clicking on Mailboxes button in your toolbar? you can have sliding window on left or right depending on where you locate your mail window in relation to the screen. also you can customise the toolbar in View menu (in case you don't have a Mailboxes button showing) Reg On 14 Mar 2005, at 6:47pm, Malcolm J McCallum wrote: Hi,when I open 'mail' I do not get my mailboxes listed down the side of the pane. OT analog SLR camera recommendations?
call me a neo-ludite but I'm going to purchase a 35mm SLR within the next week or so. Slimmed it down to a new or recent S/H Canon EOS (30 or 33), Minolta Dynna (5, 60 or7) or Nikon F (65, 75 or 80)... anybody have real life recommendations on any of those? was really looking for an S/H Nikon F4 like I had back i the mid 90's but after spending the weekend with a borrowed one it seems that memory can be ow so slightly rosy coloured.. I never remember them weighing that much or taking THAT long to autofocus. -- ~ Mark Secker Computer Support Officer ph#6488 1855 (ECEL) mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] University of Western Australia - CRICOS Provider No. 00126G ~ Only he who attempts the absurd is capable of achieving the impossible. - Miguel de Unamuno It takes an idiot to do cool things that's why it's cool - Haruhara Haruka (FLCL) http://ecel-mark.ecel.uwa.edu.au/~marksecker/index.htm (sometimes works)
iLife
If I bought a new IBook tomorrow would iLife (iPhoto 5, GarageBand 2) come preinstalled?
Re: Doom 3
even brave men play it in well lit rooms and only in short sessions. probably the most immersive game I have ever ever played... you seriously start looking over your shoulders for real after about 15 minutes... I couldn't finish it .. not too hard just after 2 or 3 hours it was giving me nightmares (and I mean that for real) and I can spend 6 to 8 hours in Rainbow 6/Ghost Recon/ Serious Sam/Far Cry no problem Doom 3 http://www.doom3.com sounds good. You might be lucky and have an iBook that has only recently shipped from Apple and has iLife 05 pre-installed. Otherwise all AppleCentres (not sure about other dealers) have been sent NFR packs of iLife 05 to throw in to the boxes of all their machines in stock that do not have iLife 05 installed. So one way or another you will get ilife 05 as part of your iBook purchase tomorrow :-) Seeya Rod!
Microsoft's perception of Australian English
Hi, I don't use Microsoft Word much, but naturally I support users who do. I have the computers set up with the default language as English (AUS) because I presumed that was the right thing to do. However, I recently used Word and found that it misspells organisation as organization. I was able to overcome this problem by setting the language to English (UK). I'm flabbergasted that it could be wrong like this. It seems to be a problem in both Word v.X and Word 2004. I guess my users are just ignoring these errors. However, it makes me wonder what everyone else does. Do you leave it as AUS and just ignore the errors, or do you set it to UK? I'm not sure of the differences between Word's AUS and UK spellings, except that they seem to be basically back-to-front in this case.

While swearWord thinks there is an error in your document press F7 to bring up Spelln n Grimace. Click OptionsDictionariesNew and save it in a folder where it will get backed up along with the user's other data. You could also pop a pref file into new installs with the change already made. SLR camera choice made
I tell you between the WA 2 lists I posted my original question to I could have gone in to business selling (or at least disposing of) obsolete prosumer SLR's. One wonders what other obsolete or unused toys we have stashed away (Dear Mr Corks, you are humbly requested to keep your comments to your self on that one because we honestly don't want to know what you have stashed under your bed) thanks to who ever it was (sorry message left on work computer - that thought it was spam - must have been the buy now in title) who pointed out the late model Canon EOS Elan 7on e-bay (same as EOS 30V) for well under half new price with buy now option ... now bought. After talking to a few people it seemed as sentimentally attached to Pentax's as I am their auto film SLR camera's have always lagged - the I passed on the Minollta's because, despite strong reviews and recommendations, I have a compleat lack of experience with them except for their 70s medium format SLR which were not up there image quality wise with the Kon's, Bron's and 'blads that I had access to back in art school. Nikon and Canon, particularly on SLR front (digital and film), seem to be leap frogging each other every few updates and Nikon having the better street cred and probably better durability but loosing out big on price for a returning hobbyist. (s/h F4 selling for $750 - 1000+ with battery/grip and no lens) If I can't find, or resuscitate once found, my old 70/80's manual SLR's I might put a call out later for those that said they had a fully manual TTL SLRs they might sell to put a price to me aw hell e-mail me anyway who knows when I might give this foolish hobby up and decide to spend no more ;) now just have to wait for the likes of the EOS 1Ds to drop from new car price to something more reasonable - still a long wait I think. -- ~ Mark Secker [EMAIL PROTECTED] 9380 2308 (GSE) 9380 1855 (ECEL) ECEL Computer Support Officer, University of Western Australia.
