$1.69 per song. Hmm, doesn't quite have the ring of 99c per song does it?

So we have the following breakdown:

USA = 99c   (A$1.32)
Europe = 99euro  (A$1.58)
Australia = $1.69
Japan = 150 yen  (A$1.73)
UK = 79p   (A$1.87)
Japan (2nd tier) = 200 yen  (A$2.31)

So I guess we're about middle of the road.

Don't forget in the US that 99c has sales tax put on top when you
purchase (since taxes vary from state to state). I got caught out on
that on the very first item I ever bought in the US. Handed over $20
as the item was advertised $19.99, then got stung an extra couple of
bucks at the counter!

The $1.69 was the price when the backdoor was open in April. And no

Re: Problem with Software Update

2005-10-25 Thread Gordon Campbell
Oddly enough I had this problem with one of the guys I work with just
last week. I'll bet you're having problems printing too.
In my case something had happened to the permission on the /private/
tmp directory, cause Software Update and Printing and a number of
other things to be unable to write to the directory, despite
apparently having permission. From the terminal I used 'chmod -R 777 /
private/tmp' to reset all the permissions on that directory and the
problem was fixed. Note that I'm pretty sure that isn't the usual
permissions for that directory, it solved the problem, but I did have
some concerns that it might cause others.

I'm hoping someone may be able to help with this query.

My son in law has been offered an ex-DET lease Acer Travelmate 270
for $750. It seems to have been well looked after.
Generally I'd say don't buy second hand, compared to what you can get
new, but I need to ask this question?

Is it worth $750?

A quick inspection suggests it is 896 Mhz Pentium R, 1.6Ghz HDD
running Win XP Home. No other software as far as I know, other than
IE and usual Windows install stuff. It doesn't seem to have CD
burning or DVD capabilities, or installed wireless - radio/infrared.

As I've had far more experience with Macs, I'm not sure what to tell
him. What is your advice?
(Don't tell me to tell him to buy a Mac. I know he should :-) but
he's a winMan. Let's leave it at that.)

Many thanks

Reg

No, but I reckon it's cheaper than buying a whole new-release CD for
roughly $30.

And finding that only 3 out of 10 songs were actually worth listening to more
than once ;-)

And I don't know about others, but on the odd occassion when I have bought a
cd, the first thing I do is rip to iTunes then store the CD away. A waste in
my book! (Unlike the cool stuff you used to get in records!)

You're quite right guys - I just got a little depressed after reading the
blog below which highlights how the labels could still quite easily wreck
the party by sabotaging Apple's prices. The important point as you guys
have reminded me is that if you are buying just a couple of tracks off an
album, you can't beat iTunes and it should hopefully be rare for the
purchase of a whole album on iTunes to not also be competitive.

Here's hoping the examples cited in this blog are the exception rather than
the rule.  :-)
