Re: Slide show with music
Hi Denise, i did something like this using imovie, it worked fine for me and you are also able to adjust the time that you show the frames for. I then burnt using idvd but this puts in an index at the front of the movie so someone else may be able to suggest something a little more straight forward. I seem to remember that there was a discussion about burning a few months ago on Wamug. FS: G4 12 1.2Ghz iBook $700 plus extras
OK I'm reluctantly selling my 12 iBook, almost as new condition (barely used as I have G4 tower and a PowerBook that are my main Macs) Tracking these on ebay for the last few weeks they go for around $750 to $1000 + postage and delivery. As you know I generally sell my S/H gear way below current S/H market prices (or even give it away) but there's a vintage Rickenbacker guitar with my name on it so I'm asking the still very reasonable price of $700 to get a quick sale ... I've been wanting one of these guitars for years so need to sell this fast to secure a reasonable deposit on the Rick. Able deliver out as far as Joondalup/Rockingham/Mundaring areas Note that it will not be available to be delivered or picked up until this Thurday evening as I have to copy off all my digital photos then reformat it and run all the updates. Please ring my mobile (0403 692626) rather than the work number listed below. Details: Purchased new about 1 year and 7 months ago. Almost as new (my guess is much less than 100 hours usage in total) no damage to unit, screen is in perfect condition, no noticeable scratches to case (except for very very minor almost unnoticeable light scuffing) 12 screen. This unit has been BIOS flashed to enable extended desktop support on an external monitor, trust me on this this is a _very_ useful feature especially on the smaller 12 units. 1.2Ghz combo (DVD reader CDRW burner) 60Gb HD (largest built to order disk size that Apple suppled) 768 MB RAM (1x500Mb RAM + built in 256MB) 2 x USB2 1 x FireWire 400 Airport Extreme card with 11b 11g support no Bluetooth but has been tested and works with generic Bluetooth usb stick (which are around $40 - $50) a fresh, clean 10.4.x install with patches will be done for the buyer prior to delivery. Most (all?) documentation and all CDs Battery is in good condition and not one of the faulty recall units, last time I used it (this weekend just gone ) it easily got 2 1/2 hours of use with the battery meter still well in the green. Under extended 3 year warranty so almost 1 1/2 years remaining on it (I can't find the original apple protection plan paper work but the serial number is registered with Apple and if you have any issues I'm more than happy to act as a go-between for any warranty work should it be needed - that's part of my day to day work so not an issue for me) --- Extras: free STM neoprene slip bag + generic laptop shoulder bag. Also free I'll throw in a 15 Apple LCD studio display screen (like this http://futureshare.lip6.fr/images/AppleStudioDisplay.gif but in bondi blue) - nothing flash - it's 8 years old but still works well for word processing web browsing (and it looks cool as the laptop sits perfectly under the display giving an almost seamless desktop extension ) iLife 06 CD suppled. I'll also throw in for an extra $60 (if the buyer wants it) a USB+Audio Belkin Flip (KVM+ audio switch http://www.belkin.com/flip/), a Microsoft scrollwheel mouse and some assorted USB and Firewire cables. -- ~ Mark Secker Computer Support Officer ph# 61-8-6488 1855 (ECEL) mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] University of Western Australia - CRICOS Provider No. 00126G ~ It takes an idiot to do cool things that's why it's cool - Haruhara Haruka (FLCL) Ubi fumus, ibi fumus
Daylight Saving
has 'someone' informed time.asia.apple.com (or any other time server) that WA is switching to Daylight saving at the end of the week or do we need to revert to manual setting of our (computer) system clocks? my PDA has the provision for setting daylight saving options in a particular Time Zone but I can't find any similar options in System Preferences in OS X. Is there such a provision I am missing? I suppose all dashboard widgets that relate to timezones will need to be updated (somehow; sometime)? or do they all reference system time? what about something like iCal that allows timezone-support for events? at least with Y2K we had time to anticipate the problems ( probably averted most of the potential issues - rather than them not existing in the first place) peter meyer 0408 902349 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

NTP (time) servers give times in GMT and it's not our absolute time that's changing. It's our timezone that's changing. There is an Apple support forum discussion going on the topic but no definite answer yet. One reported recommended solution from Apple WA is to change the time zone city to Osaka, Japan on the day and then revert to Perth when DS finishes. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3586651 There is also a non-Apple patch that someone had made http://www.ucc.asn.au/~matt/time/ - read the readme file - it just replaces the MacOS Aus/Perth time zone file and should work OK except that it BREAKS iCal as it has it's own Time zone settings. I've also contacted Apple Aus directly. The guy I spoke to had no idea but checked with a senior technician. Apparently a WA Govt dept has also been inquiring too as to Apple's recommended solution. I have a case number but no answer yet. There was mention of a possible patch from Apple, though I think we'd be lucky to see anything by the weekend. Noone was given much chance to do much preparation for this DS trial. Maybe a few calls of encouragement to Apple couldn't hurt. So I'd suggest that changing to the Japan TZ on Sunday would be the best option so far for most non-unix experts. woz On Tuesday, November 28, 2006, at 10:58AM, Peter Meyer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: has 'someone' informed time.asia.apple.com (or any other time server) that WA is switching to Daylight saving at the end of the week or do we need to revert to manual setting of our (computer) system clocks? my PDA has the provision for setting daylight saving options in a particular Time Zone but I can't find any similar options in System Preferences in OS X. Re: Registrant comparison?
We have used CheapDomains (generally $38 / 2 years for .au and $48 / 2 years for international) and they happily tried to help us when we rang them. We have also used ClicknGO (around $39 / 2 years for international and $29 / 2 years for .au, although .com.au is more). Both have web based interfaces which allow you to change registration details - as far as I remember no trouble using Safari. Once the domain is set up you do not normally need much service from the registrar except an email when the domain is about to expire, to remind you to renew. Most do this - it is in their interest to do so. Re: Daylight Saving
Thanks Tony but the Apple link just refers back to the basic help page for the date/time settings so unless there's an OS update in the offing, it sounds like we will have to abandon automatic time updates at this stage - unless there's a hack for the time-zone settings file? We don't seem to have the option of re-setting to other times-zones like Kuala Lumpur or Manila as they share our current, non-DS arrangement. Of course the Gov'mint info says it's 'your' problem - fix it (or have the software vendors fix it). It seems to imply that the vendors are doing this and I'm sure this would be true but but I guess they would have liked more notice Aha - I've just read Woz' reply too - yes moving to Osaka seems to be the best (temporary) solution. Thanks for that; I'd missed it. It does look like there are a number of hacks available but, as you say - there'll be an update at some stage. Tassie is catered for and that must be an even smaller part of the Oz market. There are quite a few implications when you start looking into fiddling with our clocks… On 28/11/2006, at 11:11 AM, Tony Monaghan wrote: The WA Government has put this link on their website. Re: Daylight Saving
Hi all, I am guessing that the best option really is to set your timezone to Osaka on Sunday. As people have noted, NTP (network time servers) provide GMT and your computer makes up its own mind thereafter. Even if Apple could release a patch this week, the experience with Microsoft suggests that you might want to avoid it anyway. I guess it depends whether Mac OS X Server is affected, for those who use it. If you had not already done so, enabling timezone awareness in iCal will hopefully cause it to automatically display the corrected DST/Osaka times in your calendar (just as if you were travelling). Apparently Microsoft released a patch for daylight saving (for selected products only), but it causes Exchange Server to crash, and although Microsoft recommends rolling back the patch, its instructions for doing so are a dead end. In any case, the patch doesn't fix all your events in Outlook, so Microsoft recommends that you print out your appointments onto paper as a backup and then change them all by hand!!! And even worse, if you have already applied Microsoft's patch, your appointments may be an hour out of step already, but it depends on how your Windows Registry was configured at the time you installed the patch. Whether or not you set your timezone to Osaka, just keep an eye out if you use any websites that are timezone sensitive (e.g., here I am using Google's Gmail), or if you use a corporate server that is located outside WA. Who knows what will happen in December...I don't imagine every other country is going to bend over backwards to patch their servers just because WA Parliament enacted some half-baked policy on the run with half a minute's notice... Moneyworks Express is quite powerful, covers GST and Salaries but not invrntory (need Gold for that), and most important, very easy to use and understand. If you want total confusion (unless you are a trained accountant) you can opt for MYOB. I think you are being very unkind to MYOB, John. In my experience, a large percentage of business owners like the work they do but really dislike doing the books. In the good old days we could all afford to send our stuff to accountants in the shoe box and not have to think about it. John Howard put paid to that when he introduced GST and forced us to do the books, as we should have done from day one if we were running a business anyway. I know many accountants told their clients to computerise or else go walk - they just would not have been able to handle it. MYOB was quite probably the first business accounting package that really made it affordable for small/medium businesses to do their own thing. What used to cost $4-5,000 was reduced to about $400 and later on even less for small/simple businesses. The main thing is that the user is trained in a manner that they understand, not how the trainer wants to present it. As an example, I recently helped a lady to set up her husband's business and was training her in it's use. She was carrying on the whole time and I had really thought that I had lost her, but I kept calm and tried to show what she needed from her point of view using her work flow. A few months later I got a surprise email from her thanking me for my perseverence and stating that she thinks MYOB is the best thing since sliced bread! (I think that's a bit debatable:)). So I am sorry you have had a bad experience with MYOB, but you certainly do not need to be a trained accountant to use it! Actually I know of some who can't use it themselves!! but that is more to do with their technophobia, I think.
