Skype audio quality

2007-10-10 Thread Severin Crisp
I am encountering fairly regularly situations where Skype audio
quality during a call is bad in one direction but not in the other.
This is quite apart from the awful echoes when one party does not use
a headset or has badly placed microphone and speakers.
This afternoon I could hear the other party perfectly but I was
breaking up to him. My connection was idle in all other respects.
He reported the reverse with a third party - he could hear them
perfectly but waqs himself breaking up to them. Is there a simple
explanation for this and more importantly what can be done about?

Re: Skype audio quality

2007-10-10 Thread Chris Griffiths
I've often encountered the same thing. I'm wondering whether it has
to do with the differing connection speeds. In other words, if I am
on 512 and my caller is on 256 the caller breaks up and I'm clear.
Because I noticed that when we were both on 512 we had no problems.

Alternatively, could you suggest a wireless router modem with wired

Personally I would recommend the NetGear DG834G v4 router. Not sure
if you will be able to find the v4, as it's only just come out. The
v3 is the one I use and sell. It's as solid as a rock and the web
interface is easy as ie to set up.

Re: Toner hint for Brother printers

2007-10-10 Thread Matthew Healey

Not really...

We have just gotten use to paying next to nothing for laser printers
these days.

Printers are usually sold at cost or below. The makers get their
profit on the toner... not the printer.

I wonder where these ebay ones came from? Back of a truck or are
Officeworks margins really that high???

Re: Skype audio quality

2007-10-10 Thread Greg Pennefather
The problem is possibly to do with your ADSL. The A in ADSL stands for
asymmetric - meaning the speed of the link to you (download) is much faster
than the link away from you (upload). If you have a 256kbps ADSL service
then your upload speed is only 64kbps. Skype will likely use at least half
of this bandwidth. So if you're sending anything the additional traffic
will have a noticeable impact on the voice quality.

If you have a 512kbps service or faster, the upload speed shouldn't be a
problem on a lightly loaded service.

If you have used your download limit for the month your service provider may
have shaped (I think choked is more accurate) your service to a lower
speed (typically 64k/33k - dialup like speed). This would also adversely
impact the voice quality.

I have also found that Telstra's unlimited download services cause very
significant delays in voice traffic.

Skype is a parasitic service relying on each computer running it to provide
connections through the network. Following the recent outage, they have had
a lower number of these computers (called super nodes) available. This will
load up the available super nodes and possibly overload them. This would
affect voice quality because the voice traffic goes through these super
nodes.

Because Skype uses TCP instead of UDP (like other VoIP protocols) it can be
affected by packet loss. UDP based VoIP will just break up if packets are
lost (due to errors on the link) because UDP will just drop the errored
packets and continue on but TCP will require retransmission of the lost
packets causing delays and jitter (variable delay).

Headsets are definitely preferred for VoIP on a PC - no question.

What can be done - increase the speed of your link, make sure your Mac's CPU
isn't overloaded (Skype uses the Macs processor to digitise the voice and
send it - fairly processor intensive) and, if your ADSL modem supports it,
turn on voice quality of service (QoS) or prioritisation.

Hope that helps a bit

Cheers

Greg

I have one of these and I can tell you it's a dream unit. What
impressed me was the first time I set it up. It automatically
detected my Telstra Cable network and configured itself to use it
correctly. There was little more to do than set the Wireless SSID and
change the unit's password. It has performed faultlessly ever since.

Hi Tony,

I had this happen once. Try logging out and then logging back in again.
If that doesn't refresh the desktop and fix your problem, remove the
preference

Home Library Preferences - com.apple.desktop.plist

If none of the above solves the problem
How I corrected this was using 'Show or Hide Invisible Files 1.5' to
show invisible files,
then hide invisible files and the Picture 1.png remained showing
on the desktop.

Cheers,
Ronni

Can't get default application to change

2007-10-10 Thread Kaye and Geoff

Hi,

I've just been trying to sort out problems for a friend with a new
Intel iMac (OS10.4.10), where the trial version of MSoft Office 2004
was put onto the system by the sales team. I've installed MSoft
Office X, but all files created by applications default to opening in
the trial version. If I reset .doc files to open with the licensed
version of Word they immediately reset to the trial version.

I've tried renaming the trial version, then uninstalling it. No
difference - all .doc files now open with a non-existent, trashed
application.

I've trashed MSoft Office and Word Settings in the preferences and
tried to reset the default application again - same problem. It
appears to reset, but when I go on to tell it to reset all .doc files
it reverts to the now-deleted trial version.

Any ideas?

Cheers, K

Hi Kaye

This has something to do with an invisible file left somewhere from the
trail version. I remember playing around with it for a while when I had the
same problem on a client's machine.
Inside the Trial folder was a Remove Trial version of Microsoft Office.
This needed to be run to remove all the files, including the invisible ones
as well, which are now causing your problem.
There was another work around for it, but as I'm not at home, I don't have
it handy I'm afraid. Will see if I can turn it up and let you know.
I do have a Remove Office Application on this machine, which I'll send
direct to you, to see how you go.

Try that and let us know.

Thanks.

Kind Regards
Daniel

Oh, to add. Also make sure you delete the com.microsoft.plist files which
will be in the HardDrive/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences.
These will also have to be removed as well.

Hope some of that helps.
