Re: Directory Listing software

diskcatalogmaker could be the solution
it scans any removable media plus hard drives, makes a document that
is application specific, but you can export to text(with tabs as
seperator) or just use the apps by itself as a searchable data base
without haveing the harddrive connected or media inserted, it's
shareware but as far as i know it works for free aswell, for me it
works fine for the last 3 years and holds the list of approx 100

Re: Time Capsule Time machine

2008-10-07 Thread Mark Secker
Just as a pointer if you're using your time capsule via wifi then it
will be hogging the bandwidth, and because wireless shares a common
media (all machines use the same frequencies) then it will decrease
the available bandwidth for even the machine that isn't doing the
backup.

as wireless is a non switched bus network then you will lose a
certain amount of bandwidth to packet negotiation (who gets to
transmit/receive and when) and as traffic increases you will get more
and more of this bandwidth lost to traffic management communications
, and significantly, to collisions, particularly to back offs
(where, after a packet collision both macs and the wifi router will
back off their attempt to use the media for random amount of time
to clear the connection and allow a new negotiation.

as the ethernet cable on your macs and on your time capsule are both
Gigabit ethernet and on the time capsule the ports are controlled via
a switch (rather than an ethernet hub) then you will probably see a
substantial increase in real bandwidth. as any traffic on the
network destined for the Time capsule from one machine will not
interfere with traffic from the other machine attempting to download.
Also as there are less collisions (in fact a switch should, ideally,
get no collisions) there is less bandwidth lost to negotiation and
back offs.

Thanks Mark for the input will give this a try now.

Hi David

David Wood [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

When Time Machine is performing a backup it is using a portion of the available
wireless bandwidth. Therefore it will be competing with the browser and
downloads for bandwidth, which will slow both down.

...when I plug the ethernet cable from my Time Capsule back into either
machine direct then the download speed automatically increases even when Time
Machine is not backing up, which suggests there is a wireless issue with my
Time Capsule.

The wireless network will run at the speed of the slowest device on the
network. If you have the Time Capsule running on 802.11n, and at least one of
the computers on the network is 802.11g, then the network will run at 802.11g
speeds. Also ethernet will normally be faster than a wireless connection, so
yes you will get faster data transfer speeds and internet speeds when using an
ethernet cable.

I really don't need to back up every hour as my machines are more for
domestic use rather than business can I get Time Machine to just backup
once per day and preferably then at a certain time when I am not likely to be
using the net? Is there something I need to change on the configuration maybe
on either to reduce the slowing down of my machines when the back up is

It appears you already have an answer to this one.

I recently shifted to Leopard on my old PPC G5 but the yay factor has been
replaced by the grr factor.

My HP 1020 printer wasn't recognized. Google solved that one.

Anthony,

I'd suggest even when you get the updated DiskWarrior you have a
complete backup of Eudora in a Very Safe Place. DW has wreaked havoc
with my In folder, and no constructive response from Pica. An
overnight backup was the best available.

AppleWorks 6 page setup

2008-10-07 Thread Mervyn Giuliana Bond
I think the problem identified below might have started when I
updated to 10.5.5 in mid-September.
Repairing permissions and removing com.apple.appleworks.plist from
the Users Library Preference folder was of no avail.
However, tonight I repeated the procedure but in addition removed the
contents of the AppleWorks folder from the same Preference folder.
Restarted, launched AppleWorks and Page Setup now works.

I can't remember when the problem with AppleWorks 6.2.9 started on

of the document seemed to slip to the left and leave me with a dark
grey page. At the time I was using an OKIPage 8 printer that is on
my wife's iBook G4 on 10.4.11 power PC. There is no driver for the
OKI on intel. Assuming this was the problem I tried the same
procedure for the Epson Stylus C61 which has a driver on my computer
and is connected to my computer. Same result.
Thinking the existing document might be corrupted in some way I
tried a new document but got the same result.

Suggestions appreciated.

Hi David,

Not an answer, per se, to your problem - but what I do is have Time

set-up then switch it off.

Then when I think it is time to do a back-up (usually once a day but
sometimes an extra one or two if I'm busy!) I just turn on Time
machine, do

back-up now and then turn it off again.

Of course, this does defeat the set forget advantage of Time
machine and
relies on you actually remembering to back-up - but this is not
something I
have a problem with and the Time Machine menu bar item makes it really
quick
to Open Time Machine Preferences, turn it on, Back Up Now and then
turn

it off.

I have a couple of reasons for doing this:

- Like you I think that the default hourly back-up is too frequent.
- My external disks are fairly quiet but my iMacs are really quiet and I
still find the disk noise distracting - so I tend to leave them
switched off

and just switch them on for my (manual) back-up.

Since you are using a Time Capsule, I assume that your backup disk is
always
mounted - so if there is not an easy solution to actually schedule The
Time

Machine back-ups, I wonder if there is a way to automate the switch on,
back-up, switch-off approach that I describe?

I haven't done much with Applescript or automator so I'm not sure of the
scriptability of all these actions but others may be able to advise
whether

there is a way to automate/script this?

What happens if you change your preferences to start with show a
blank page

and then select the website you wish to visit

Re: Leopard - The Temperamental Big Cat

2008-10-07 Thread John Julie Thompson
As another aside to this topic. My MacBook, intel, MacOs 10.5.5 will
not recognize the HP3500 scanner. Works for one scan only and then
hangs necessitating a force-quit and sometimes a restart. Have
downloaded and installed the latest drivers (for 10.4.x, none listed
for Leopard) and also tried the latest from Vuescan, which acts in the
same manner. All to no avail.

Surprisingly enough the HP3500 works fine on the MacMini G4 running
Leopard, so looks as if it could be an Intel issue.

Any ideas?

My HP 1020 printer wasn't recognized. Google solved that one. But
worse is that my two backup SATA drives on a Sonnet Tempo X4i card
aren't mounted anymore. DriveUtility sees them but they can't be
mounted.
Repairing them hasn't worked. Updating the Sonnet firmware hasn't
worked.
And now to totally get the blood boiling I open Eudora to find that
my In
box which once had a few hundred mail items is now empty (actually
3 recent
items). The inbox file itself has only those three items. My
backups are on

the other drives (and aren't as current as I would like).
Of course my versions of TechTool Pro and DiskWarrior don't work with
Leopard... Argh!
Anyone suggest a battle plan for In box recovery? (Aside from
giving Eudora

6.2.x the flick).
For bonus points - is there a way to get MMS on the iPhone yet?
What were

they thinking leaving that functionality out?
Sigh - why did I sell my carrier pigeons ;)

Have you gone to your Eudora folder and double clicked on 'Eudora
settings'?
If you get it alive again use Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to import the
mail to Mail and yes give that old horse the flick!! ;-)

Good luck
Paul

Hi Kev,

Check in Firefox Preferences under 'Content' Default font: Times then
click Advanced (beside this) check that Default character encoding
is set to Western (ISO-8859-1) not unicode.

Cheers,

Re: Time Capsule Time machine

2008-10-07 Thread David Wood

Thanks to Daniel and Mark.

I now more clearly understand the limitations and the reasons why I
lose speed with Time Capsule.

It really is great for a lay person such as me to have this knowledge
on tap thanks again to all for your input.

When Time Machine is performing a backup it is using a portion of the
available wireless bandwidth. Therefore it will be competing with the
browser and downloads for bandwidth, which will slow both down.

...when I plug the ethernet cable from my Time Capsule back into
either machine direct then the download speed automatically
increases even when Time Machine is not backing up, which suggests
there is a wireless issue with my Time Capsule.

The wireless network will run at the speed of the slowest device on
the network. If you have the Time Capsule running on 802.11n, and at
least one of the computers on the network is 802.11g, then the network
will run at 802.11g speeds. Also ethernet will normally be faster than
a wireless connection, so yes you will get faster data transfer speeds
and internet speeds when using an ethernet cable.

I really don't need to back up every hour as my machines are more
for domestic use rather than business can I get Time Machine
to just backup once per day and preferably then at a certain time
when I am not likely to be using the net? Is there something I need
to change on the configuration maybe on either to reduce the slowing
down of my machines when the back up is running?

It appears you already have an answer to this one.

HTH

that's exactly everyone should do, in that way you do not announce
that you are online, especially 'bill gates/micro$oft' is watching
since i'm online (13years) my browsers are set to blank and i'm only
getting what i want and not what they want you to see

i just used google, all was ok on safari
