I usually use MPEGStreamclip to convert avis's - works fine.

But these (Russian) video files have subtitles (that reside in a
separate file that Quicktime player and VLC use when playing back)
but I am trying to combine the files and create a subtitled mp4v.

I did try a few times to export from VLC but it kept crashing.

Any ideas ?

Apple's currency converter widget playing up

2009-03-14 Thread Steven Knowles
Anyone noticed dodgy currency calculations when using Dashboard's
standard conversion widget?

I'm using latest Leopard OS, the 'Last Updated' details are fine, but,
for example, I get USD $1 equals AUD $0.042, or four Australian cents.
Clearly not right.

No such problem at Yahoo!, which according to the reverse side of the
conversion widget is the source of the rates. If I visit ...

http://finance.yahoo.com/currency-converter;_ylt=AoL37jMXKySmMHnIFopXQctO7sMF#from
=USD;to=AUD;amt=1

... the exchange rates seem correct.

Any ideas on what might be the problem? Can someone confirm they get
the same error?

Cheers, Steven

Ah, good, so not just me doing something stupid.

Same thing happened to me a few days back, not sure precisely when, a
week or two maybe, but then things came good, now they've gone ugly
again.

I guess if it WAS me doing something stupid, the fix would be easier.
Sounds like the fix might be to just wait for the fix - I assume any
email I send to Apple or Yahoo! would fall squarely on deaf ears or a
bottomless inbox.

Re: Apple's currency converter widget playing up

2009-03-14 Thread Christopher S
Hi Guys,

I had this problem too and I believe it was related to the Safari 4 Beta or
10.5.6. There's a solution, but it's not pretty. The fix is listed on Mac OS
X Hints here http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090225162441861
and they believe it's 10.5.6 that causes this.

Here are their instructions, and all credit should go them:

To fix this problem, make a copy of /Library/Widgets/Unit Converter.wdgt on
your Desktop, Control-click on it and choose Show Package Contents from the
pop-up menu, then open the UnitConverter.js file in a text editor. Search
for USD (with the quotes). There should be only one matching line:

if (a.iso == USD) return -1;

Delete this line. Then, delete the else at the start of the next line,
i.e. change the line from this...

else if (a.name  b.name) return -1;

...to this...

if (a.name  b.name) return -1;

Save the changes and close the document. I suggest keeping the original
widget in /Library/Widgets, and installing the corrected version in
~/Library/Widgets, so that the system's version remains untouched.

This fixed the AUD - USD problem - not sure about the others though

Goodluck

Chris.

Subject: MacPro Fans in Overdrive

Hi List,

I recently bought a refurbished 8 core MacPro from the Apple Online Shop. 2
gig of RAM, and running Sys 10.5.1. It is the model which has just been
superceded.

It was delivered about a week ago, but due to work commitments I only got to
unpack it yesterday. It seemed to boot fine, and I loaded and set about
running a memory test programme. All seemed well yesterday, with the whisper
quiet operation of the fans which I had previously seen in the retail shops I
had visited.

It is temporarily set up in the middle of the floor in my office, with
unrestricted airflow.

This morning I woke it from sleep, and shortly afterwards the fans came to life
both loud and strong. The air coming out seems barely warm, and the case is
not in the least warm. Upon being made to go to sleep, the fans die, and on
wakeup they kick in again. I have tried shutting down, leaving it for 15
minutes and rebooting, with only the Finder running. Same deal, really loud
fans if the machine is awake, instant quiet if I put it to sleep.

The machine is presently switched off.

Does anybody have any ideas??

Thanks,

Bill Chesnutt

Re: Search Window

2009-03-14 Thread Travis Hansen
Thx for your replies.
I tried doing what Francine Schwieder suggests in
System/KeyboardMouse/Keyboard Shortcuts but I don't have Find in
the shortcuts list. and I can't add a shortcut because it's not a menu
item (ie. command+shift+f).
Anyone else able to do it?
cheers
Travis

2009/3/11 Mervyn Giuliana Bond m...@iinet.net.au:
 Travis
If I enter a word in Spotlight it initially produces a list with the first
 item, Show All.
When I click on Show All a dialogue box appears and in the headings are
Contents and File Name.  As you say, Contents is the default, but a click on
File Name produces what you want.

If in the Finder you go to File and Find you get the same window as clicking
on Show All in Spotlight.  Click on File Name.
Seconds are precious but that is about all it takes.

You can also use key board shortcuts to open these windows.  See Spotlight
 preferences.
 Merv

 Hi all,
There's something that's been bugging me since upgrading to Leopard.
When I open a normal Finder window and type something in the search
field in the top right corner, it searches the contents of the files
on my mac because (of course) the Contents button is selected by
default. Is there a way to have the File Name button selected by
default when doing a search in this way?  99% of the time I only want
 to search the file names.

 Cheers
 Travis
