Re: Ghostscript

2009-05-27 Thread Mervyn Giuliana Bond
Thanks Roger. I have installed Ragtime 6.5 on a PC running XP. To
export a PDF file Ragtime requires Ghostscript 8.6 or higher. I
installed the latest version 8.6.4 for windows 32 bit. It seems to
process but ends with an error message.
Your comment about the quality of the pdf is relevant. From the Mac
version the pdf is acceptable to the printing industry.

Perhaps the ghostscript out of Ragtime will not be acceptable.
Merv

Hi Guys

Ghostscript does work but the quality of the PDF hasn't always been
good, we have
had some issues with ghostscript where we have had to put the file
back through

Acrobat to get it working.

But as always everyone has different thoughts.

roger

Just be aware that your enthusiasm may be curbed if you ever try to
copy very large amounts of data at once (such as cloning your hard
drive!). USB 2.0 tends to choke and slow to a crawl under such
conditions. This is why a drive with a Firewire port, while more
expensive, is a much better option. It is much better at sustaining
a transfer rate.

I certainly agree with Peter, I personally would not purchase a USB

Firewire is faster and more stable.

2009-05-27 Thread Philippe Chaperon
Hi Everyone,

I totally support Greg's message regarding Daniel of Macwizardry fame.
I too bought hardrives and laptops from Daniel, and the external
drives are with FW and USB and all three of them have been extremely
reliable, and so is the internal drive I have installed in my G5
1.8Ghz PPC.

Furthermore, I have installed OS X 10.5.7 on one of the external FW
drives from Daniel, and regularly boot my machine from this drive.
This means that I am able to keep my older applications running on
10.3.9 installed on one of my internal drives. That's the beauty of
FireWire!

I guess that it is now a question of 'use it or loose it', and that's
why I would promote the use of the local businesses. I know that one
may get something a tad cheaper interstate or overseas, but nothing
beats the local dealer whom you can call or email for some advice or
support.

Kind regards all,

Yes WAMUGers, I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Daniel
Kerr of MacWizardry.
I have been purchasing from Daniel, computers, external harddrives,
software, ipods, anything pertaining to 'The Macintosh way of life',
ever since I purchased my first computer ... and that is a long time ;-)

Not only does Daniel supply everything at a very reasonable price, his
support is unequalled to any other service I know.

Daniel also gives his time and knowledge FREE to our WAMUG Mailing
list, and works tirelessly to keep WAMUG existing.
I support Philippe Greg in promoting our local business. Sure I can
purchase cheaper elsewhere, but would I get the right advice, or the
service Daniel gives ... NO WAY!

Re: G5 imac won't start

2009-05-27 Thread Philippe Chaperon
Hi Mike,

Wonder if it is your motherboard battery that has gone flat. I know
that if this battery goes the machine may not boot at all.

Can you remember if your date and time was being kept accurately last
time the machine booted? If you have had to reset the time and date a
few times this would indicate the RAM battery going flat.

Sorry can't help you with opening the iMac, I have no experience with
this particular model but go to the following Apple link for
instructions:

http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/imacG5_allModels_BackupBattery.pdf

Best of luck,

Philippe Chaperon

 Hi all

Our sole remaining G5 iMac in the fleet has decided to play up.

This morning when trying to wake it up as normal the screen remained black
and the fans started to roar. Held the off switch down for 5 seconds and it
shut down. left it for a while, unplugged everything, switched it on. The
light came on, very slightly pulsing, but no chime. Dark screen. After about
a minute the fans came on again, so shut it down again. Repeated the process
 a couple of times.

Thinking there may be a dust build up inside I tried to get the back off,
loosened the three screws, but couldn't get the back off...seems very tight
and I didn't want to wriggle it too much.

Opinions sought. Is there an easy solution that I'm overlooking?

 Cheers
 Mike

Justin ,

you might try reconnecting the keyboard ... without the printer
connected to it

as a trouble shooting trial

then what happens when the printer is connected ... do you get a
message that says

there is low current for that device ?

Bob

I had no trouble with the Dell keyboard on currently os.

As to why I use an external keyboard, it is a question of
ergonomics. Any ergonomist will tell you that typing directly onto a
laptop keyboard for extended periods of time eg all day, and
particularly looking down at the laptop screen will eventually lead
to posture problems, loads of back and neck pain, and forearm
soreness as well. You don't see laptop only setups often in
corporates any more as a result. For the small amount that they
cost, you should get one too. Definitely better to type on IMHO.

Thanks for input thus far...

Justin

maybe the keyboard is power hungry thus it appears unreliable, i have
seen that sort of problems on windows machines where on the front
only certain memory stick worked, some othere got slow after
connecting them to the backside socket they worked on full speed
just something: can you borrow a mains powered usb hub try the
keyboard with that oneJames

Hi Justin,

I'm intrigued ... why are you using an external keyboard on your
PowerBook? I can 'sort of' understand why some people prefer to use
an external mouse instead of the trackpad, but an external keyboard
on a laptop?

Were you using the Dell keyboard in Leopard?

I think USB drivers aren't loaded until the OS starts up. Are you
allowing enough time for the operating system to fully boot up.
I wonder if it's not getting power quick enough to the USB port for
both keyboard and mouse?

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi wamuggers, got a small but frustrating problem - each time I
shut down my powerbook or disconnect the external keyboard, I have
to connect the keyboard 3 times before it recognises it and allows
me to type. The mac mouse which is connected to the keyboard works
no problem however.

I have a powerbook g4, latest os and it is a mac keyboard.
Interestingly I never had this problem with a dell keyboard I used
to plug in into the powerbook. Any suggestions gratefully
appreciated...

Re: G5 imac won't start

2009-05-27 Thread Mike Murray

Thanks for the advice Philippe

Further research indicates that 'there are no user serviceable parts
in this model' and the back doesn't come off readily. The link you
gave is for the earlier G5 imacs.

So today's job is to find an Apple repairer and await the
diagnosis...which I fear may be grim.

I'd go ahead and bin it. I have no doubt that whatever application or
