Re: Mac mini vers iMac

2010-09-01 Thread Touchwood

Hi John (and anyone who might have been curious...)

My new 21.5 i5 3.6GHz iMac is a keeper...I'm happy with the
screen...I wouldn't say I'm ecstatic with the screen
because it has some feint yellow mottling on the left lower side...it
is still not as uniform in appearance as my current G5 iMac.

Much better than the previous rejected iMacs though.

Screen is bright and sharp, the computer is super quiet, everything
seems to work and the external case has no
manufacturing defects unlike the last two iMacs I received at the
beginning of the year.

Here's hoping it gives me the service reliability I got (still
getting) out of the G5.

Cheers

Hi John

With the recent refresh of the iMac, its processors, graphics card
etc. are now well ahead of the Mac mini.

The Mac mini also has the slower 5400 rpm HD vs 7200rpm of the iMac.
To get 8GB of RAM into the Mac mini you need to purchase two 4GB
Modules as there are only 2 RAM slots,
which is a more expensive option than the 4 x 2GB you can achieve
with the iMac.

By the time you spec up a Mac mini and add the cost of the
monitor, you're paying the equivalent of the base iMac

and you've got a very underpowered machine by comparison.

There is no doubt the Mac mini is a beautiful and elegant little
machine...it's just a shame Apple won't come to the party

and give it the horse power it needs.

Just a word of warning if you decide to go the iMac route.

Since the introduction of the LED screen at the end of last year,
there is an issue with yellow tinge or blotchy screens.
Unfortunately this seems to be a subjective issue...some people
don't seem phased by it... for others (like me ;-) )
it is extremely annoying and unacceptable in a computer for which
we are paying $2,000.

Last December I purchased a new iMac and its screen was bad
(yellow blotches), nowhere near the quality of my current G5 iMac.
Two screen replacements and two replacement computers later, Apple
still could not give me an iMac with an acceptable screen,
and the last two iMacs also had manufacturing defects in the
bargain (one had black paint scratched off on the inside of the
glass border

and the other had a ding in the lower right front corner.)
In the end I gave up and managed to get a refund...the whole
exercise took from December 2009 to April 2010.

I've waited until this recent refresh to try again and with some
trepidation I have ordered another iMac.
In fact it is ready for me to pick up from the courier depot
tomorrow.
I hope I don't have to go through the whole replacement fiasco
again, but I am not confident when discussions like these are

still showing up

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?
threadID=2528347start=15tstart=0

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=983886

If the Mac mini was just a more capable computer, I would
definitely have chosen it over the iMac, just to avoid

all the angst that Apple's lack of quality control is giving me.

Sorry about the rant, but I hope this information is helpful to you.

Cheers
Neil

WAMUG Meeting Reminder: This Tuesday 1 September 2010 (Please Do Not Reply)

2010-09-01 Thread Pete Smith
G'day all WAMUGGERS.

Winter's gone, Spring is here and another meeting approaches.

Yes, that's right. Mark your calendar, update your iCal, put a note on the
fridge. Next Tuesday, 7 September 2010 is the next monthly meeting.

For the rest of this year, the monthly meetings will be held in the
FutureSphere at Christ Church Grammar School.

What's on? I hear you ask. In no particular order;

✠   Pages - we'll continue our look at specific aspects of Pages;
☏ Basic tech support - e.g. do you know what a pram reset is?
☺ Bento on the iPhone iPad.

Of course, don't forget the questions and answer session at the beginning. This
meeting, to try something new, we thought we'd have the cuppa and biscuits at
the end of the QA so you can sip and dip as the topics are presented.

(Details are subject to change without notice)

As you are all probably aware, WAMUG is now required to have insurance, and
holding meetings also now have costs involved (the good ol' days are gone now,
alas), so it has been decided that a $5 fee per person is to be charged at each
future meeting to help cover these costs.

Location: FutureSphere, Level 1 Building L; Christ Church Grammar School,
Queenslea Drive Claremont.
Time: 7.30pm - 9.00pm
Cost: $5

Visit
http://www.ccgs.wa.edu.au/atccgs/important-files-store/map-web2010-2.png to
view a detailed map.
The FutureSphere is building L in the middle along Queenslea Drive [Grid ref:
G9]
Streetsmart map ref: 371 A 10 (Queenslea Drive comes off Stirling Hwy and is
opposite Stirling Rd. The school is next to Bethesda Hospital.)

See you there.

Quick Run down from Apple event,..

2010-09-01 Thread Daniel Kerr

Quick Run down,...

New iPod shuffle, Nano and Touch
iOS 4.1 due next week for iPhone and iPod touch
iOS 4.2 set for November release. Free for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.
New iTunes 10 (new icon) and Ping social network for music
Airtunes now called AirPlay. Very cool

New Apple TV . 1/4 size of previous version. USD$99. Available in 4 weeks.

Dude from Coldplay finished it off with a song.
Best comment I recken,.. He spoke about a song that the band's manager (and
others) said wasn't a hit single and not very good. But with the weight of
Apple turned it into their most popular song. Which proves your (Apple)
marketing people can sell anything - Gotta love that! LOL

All looks very cool,...

You can read more here;-
http://www.macrumors.com/

Must say,..the streaming was pretty good too ;o)

Enjoy!
