Priceless quote from RIM employee
Hi Wamuggers, I love this quote from an open letter allegedly by a high-level employee of RIM. (RIM until the advent of the iPhone was the unchallenged market leader in the smartphone business in the US and Canada.) We simply have to admit that Apple is nailing this and it is one of the reasons they have people lining up overnight at stores around the world, and products sold out for months, the letter continued. These people aren’t hypnotized zombies, they simply love beautifully designed products that are user centric and work how they are supposed to work. Here is the AppleInsider source article: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/06/30/rim_forms_committee_to_investigate_ceo_roles_as_execs_open_letter_calls_for_change.html I'm being a bit disloyal perhaps as RIM is a Canadian company. :-) Cheers, Carlo -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

Hi Bill, I'm still not entirely clear. Is it unreadable gobbledegook or are the letters correct but badly printed. When I say you could have the printer set to draft quality, that is a per document decision that you can make in the print dialog. Re: PDF printing
Hi Bill, It can vary from printer to printer, but to give you the example of my printer, if from Preview I select the menu option File Print… the dialog that appears is the Print Dialog. To set the output quality to high one would proceed as follows: 1) If the dialog is small, press the down arrow near the printer's name to make the dialog larger and show all the options. 2) About half way down the dialog is a drop down sitting on a horizontal line. Select Print Settings in this drop down. 3) A Resolution drop down now becomes visible. Select the highest number of dots-per-inch (dpi) available. Mine for instance has 1200 dpi. The above steps can be different in minor details for different brands of printers, but you may be able to get the general idea from this and find the equivalent setting in your printer. Re: OT : iPhone syncing error
Hi Maureen, I think you are using an iPhone 3G S not the original iPhone 3G. Often the “An Unknown Error occurred 1140 is related to the “iPod Photo Cache”. iPod Photo Cache This folder is created by iTunes if you choose to sync your iPhoto library with a photo capable iPod. It contains cached information about the last time the photos were synced and help speed up the syncing process, allowing iTunes to tell which photos have changed since the last sync and only update those ones” Are you syncing any photos? Try deleting the iPod Photo Cache, which is created in the iPhoto database when transferring photos to an iPod, iPhone, and iPad. With iPhoto 09, quit iPhoto if launched and using the Finder go to Pictures iPhoto Library. Control-click on the iPhoto Library and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents. Locate the iPod Photo Cache folder and delete this folder. Try syncing photos again. All selected photos will need to be re-optimized again, which will automatically create a new iPod Photo Cache folder in your iPhoto library. See if you can now sync your iPhone. Re: Rotating text in Preview
Hi Chris, I don’t think you can actually rotate text in Preview application. There doesn’t appear to be a way to specify text direction, so all text will be horizontal. However, you can rotate the image, then place an annotation, rotate the image back again, so text can effectively be rotated. If I can think of anything better I’ll let you know, but that is the only way I’ve been able to rotate text in Preview. Ejecting a CD
HI ALL I have just received a call from a friend of mine (who has Parkinsons Disease so has trouble relaying exact details) who put a CD into her G4 Macbook Pro, UPSIDE DOWN. Yes, she had the silver side showing up. All I can ascertain about the laptop is that it is a G4 but does not have an Intel processor. Using OSX but not sure which version. Can anyone help me please in a suggestion as to how to get the CD out. Apparently it is set to use F12 to eject and I asked her to hold Option+F12 but nothing happened. Any help greatly appreciated THANKS Denise Williams 0417184592 -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au
Re: Ejecting a CD
Hi Denise, Restart the MacBoo Pro and hold down the mouse button. Keep your finger pressed down until the disk ejects, or the login screen appears. Re: Rotating text in Preview
Hi Ronni What a great idea Ronni. I really like the way you think...that is certainly lateral! I will try this and if I cant get what I want I will use PS5 at last resort. Also had another shock today while trying to do some basic stats in the new Excel 2011 but couldnt do anything as this version does not support the Analysis ToolPak, and add in normally supplied with previous versions. Apparently Microsoft are not doing this any longer so I have to revert to 3rd party software!! How nice and thoughtful of them! My workaround for this is to crank up my early version of excel (Version X) and use that side by side! Many thanks Chris Email: c...@it.net.au On 02/07/2011, at 12:11 PM, Ronda Brown wrote: Hi Chris, I don’t think you can actually rotate text in Preview application. There doesn’t appear to be a way to specify text direction, so all text will be horizontal. However, you can rotate the image, then place an annotation, rotate the image back again, so text can effectively be rotated. If I can think of anything better I’ll let you know, but that is the only way I’ve been able to rotate text in Preview. or use a drawing app or photoshop, create the text, rotate then export to jpg or better png (if transparency is needed) because your text is now a pic it can be resized rotated with preview SAD Technic U3 6 Chalkley Pl Bayswater WA Australia +618 9370 5307 mob 0414 421132 (international +614 14421132) sad...@iinet.net.au http://www.members.iinet.net.au/~saddas/ Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.
