Using telephony with USB internet modems
Not having previously needed a portable internet device recently, at least not in Australia, a need has arisen, but only for a an hour or two. Upon discovering the extortionate internet access rates on offer from the hotel, I happened to have a USB modem I'd previously bought in Thailand, and happened to have a SIM with a few GB of data allowance on it from Amaysim. I put the two together, plugged it in my Mac, and was pleasantly surprised to discover that all worked without a hitch! The question ... whilst I have the internet modem and Amaysim SIM working for internet access, is there some kind of softphone application to access the my voice plan with that SIM? The software which came with the internet modem (HSPA USB Modem from TCT Mobile Limited, which seems to have some arrangement with Alcatel) has SMS functionality, and that works, but the software doesn't seem to have voice capability. What can I use? I do have an iPhone 3G, plus the cable which connects the iPhone to Mac for charging and syncing purposes. And a Nokia X5 in which the Amysim SIM usually resides. Could I use either the iPhone or X5 as the modem? If so, what settings would I need to play with if any? Re: Using telephony with USB internet modems
Hi Susan, With the Modem setup Steven has setup he can send receive SMS, but can’t make phone calls. He could use Skype. While calls made between computers, video conferencing, and text chats are free, calls to land-line phones and cell phones are not. Might be worth having a look at this: http://www.quickstartvoip.com/free-voip-software.html Free Internet Phone Services Turn Your PC or Mac into a Full-Fledged Telephone If you want to try internet phone services but don't want to make commitment to one VOIP company, then try VOIP for free. Most free internet phones let you call other users of the same service for free. This is called free PC to PC calls. It's easy to set up. Just join the service yourself, and then invite your friends and family to do the same. What most people don't know, is that other services allow you to make free PC to phone calls. In other words, the person you're calling is on a regular phone or mobile phone.” Cheers, Ronni On 07/07/2011, at 8:46 AM, Susan Hastings wrote: Will this allow him to make phone calls from his Mac using the sim card and modem setup he described. Re: final cut pro
Hi James, I have tried the latest version of Final Cut Pro X and it is very polished, functional and intuitive. For a, so-called, prosumer product it is excellent. The complaints are coming from professional studios who have lost some of the features that they had in Final Cut Pro 7 Studio, the previous version of the product. The previous version of FCP has been declared end-of-life. The main problems are that FCP X will not import projects from the old version, does not have support for multiple cameras (filming simultaneously as is done in a feature film), will not support the Camera Red system, and has lost support for some professional codecs. The new product is being likened to Apples introduction of OS X, which was at first less functional that OS 9 but which had an eye on the future. Others think that Apple is abandoning the professional market, which is a small niche, in favour of the much larger prosumer market. Apple for its part does not seem to be backing down and is offering a refund to disgruntled buyers of FCP X. It has promised that multiple camera support will be offered in an upgrade. I am following the debate with interest and am sure there is a team of developers somewhere on the Apple campus putting in some all-nighters. :-) Cheers, Carlo On 2011-07-07, at 08:20, James / Hans Kunz wrote: just found this info http://www.boingboing.net/2011/06/28/apple-offers-refunds.html which points ...no to buy fcpx the lasted version of finalcut pro James SAD Technic U3 6 Chalkley Pl Bayswater WA Australia +618 9370 5307 mob 0414 421132 (international +614 14421132) sad...@iinet.net.au http://www.members.iinet.net.au/~saddas/ Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish. -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

Hi Steven, If I understand you correctly, you have internet access and a wireless network already set-up and working - and now you want to make VOIP phone calls over this network. You also have an iPhone 3G, which can connect to the network via wifi, so I would have thought a VOIP app for the iPhone would achieve what you want. This page seems to review some contenders: http://www.ismashphone.com/2010/12/6-great-voip-apps-for-ios.html I have not tried any of these or actually run a VOIP app on my iPhone - so I cannot comment on pros cons. Hi, Apologies if you all know these - but it was news to me (I think) pretty cool ;o) Take a Screenshot - To take a screenshot, hold the home button and click the sleep button. The screen will flash white and the screenshot will be stored in your camera roll. Move dock icons - You'd be surprised how often this tip is overlooked. The 4 icons located on the grey bar at the bottom of your iPhone - Phone, Mail, iPod, Safari - are movable, just like the rest of the icons. Just press and hold the icons, then drag them while they are shaking. Press the home button when you're done. You can put any 4 icons on your dock. Re: Thunderbird corruption problem
Hi Bill, To restore corrupted mailboxes: 1. Quit Thunderbird. 2. In your profile folder, open the Mail subfolder, and then the subfolder for that mail account. Delete the *.msf file for the folder (mailbox) that is giving you problems-- e.g., if your inbox is the one with problems, delete inbox.msf. Do NOT delete the file named Inbox (with no filename extension), as it contains your messages. 3. Restart Thunderbird. It will analyse your message file and rebuild the index file (table of contents) from your existing messages. To help keep your system healthy after you get it working again, compact your mail folders regularly, and move messages you want to keep out of your inbox into their own mail folder. Where is my Profile Folder? Re: final cut pro
Hi James I agree with Carlo's analysis. I'm exploring FCP X (and Motion and Compressor) and finding that it's excellent, intuitive and powerful so far, with plenty of upside promised/rumoured. I'm creating camera archives of all my digital DV tapes through its archiving procedure which is just a little flaky (sometimes the process 'hangs' at the last clip on the tape; sometimes it doesn't). The archives are 'skimmable' through FCP X which opens up a whole new world of video that I'd forgotten I had. I think it's going to be a great product, but I agree that the big film/TV producers have been left high and dry and are shouting loudly. The 'support' discussion groups are ringing with shrill comments about the end of civilisation as they know it... But the products worth trying out...you can still run earlier versions of Final Cut (Pro and Express), although the installation will move your old Final Cut Pro to a new folder. You'll need to keep these old versions, especially if you need to rework projects. FCP X won't open existing Final Cut projects, but will open .mov files (and many others), so you can always export a Final Cut project as a .mov file and open it with FCP X. I am following the debate with interest and am sure there is a team of developers somewhere on the Apple campus putting in some all-nighters. :-) Cheers, Carlo Mike Murray and Lesley Silvester TimeTrackers East Fremantle Western Australia Tel 08 9339 8078 Fax 08 9339 0519 British and Australian genealogical and historical research, education, publishing and film-making www.timetrackers.com.au -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au
