Re: Malware alert from CNET

2012-03-28 Thread Joseph Mastrella
Greetings! Thank you for your all the help you give to the club and to me.
Stay well.

Cheers, Joe

 Hi Joe,

For this attack to work, you would need to open a maliciously crafted
Word file that has likely been distributed via spam and other suspicious
means that could easily be avoided. “

Have you opened such a file?

If you have and are worried, you can detect by running the Terminal
commands as instructed in the article.
If after running the Terminal commands and you receive “No such file or
directly” you are fine, nothing to worry about.

How to run these commands in Terminal:

 1. Go to Applications Utilities Terminal
 2. Open Terminal
 3. Copy and then Paste this command:
 ls /Applications/Automator.app/Contents/MacOS/
 4. click ‘Return’ key on keyboard

You should then only see the typed word - Automator

 5. Then copy paste this command:
 ls /Library/launchd
 6. Click Return key on your keyboard

You should then only see this “No such file or directory”.

 /Quote:
 1. Variant One
The first piece of malware appears to install in the Automator program
that ships with OS X as a binary called DockLight, which you can detect
by running the following command in the Terminal (available in the
 /Applications/Utilities/ folder):
 ls /Applications/Automator.app/Contents/MacOS/

If you run this command you should only see Automator listed in the
output, but if you also see DockLight or any other files listed along with
Automator then you might consider scanning your system with a malware
 scanner.

 2. Variant Two
The second piece of malware appears to try to mimic the system launcher
program launchd by installing a similarly named executable file in the
global library directory, and then creates a launch agent that keeps this
binary file running when the computer starts. As with Variant One, you can
check your system to see if it shows up by running the following command in
 the Terminal:
 ls /Library/launchd

If the result of this command contains the phrase No such file or
directory then you are fine. However, if it returns the string
/Library/launchd without mention of there not being any such file or
directory then you again might consider scanning your system for malware.

 Cheers,
 Ronni

Don't believe the noise on the interwebs - the new iPad does work on 4G

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) defines 4G to include:
 - LTE (Long Term Evolution)
 - WiMax
 - HSPA+ dual carrier

Vivid Wireless advertises their WiMax service which tops out at 4-5mbps
 around Australia as 4G.

Telstra advertises their HSPA+ dual carrier service which is capable of
running at speeds up to 42mps as 4G (as per the ITU). Already users are
reporting real-world speeds of up to 20 Mbps in Sydney besting Vivid
 Wireless's 4G speeds by a factor of 4.

At the moment, Telstra's LTE service is giving faster speeds in many tests,
but just wait till the number of users increases to the sorts of numbers on
the HSPA frequencies and you should see those speeds drop as LTE users (just
like HSPA and WiMax) all share the same bandwidth to their local tower. In
the USA, tests of 4G in New York top out at 20mbps - the same as what
Tesltra HSPA+ dual carrier achieves in the real world here in Australia.

Telstra has also previously indicated they would be doubling the speed of
HSPA+ DC to 84mbps using MIMO which would give it parity with the current
generation of LTE. Only LTE Advanced theoretically offers greater than
 100mbps.

The iPad 4G is indeed 4G in Australia and the ACCC has no case.

If its a 17 Thunderbolt MBP 2011 it is the ExpressCard 34 slot

A read of the manual will tell you what each slot and port does. It came with

EU mobile charges

2012-03-28 Thread cm
Hi WAMUGers,

there have been a number of posts about travelling to Europe with an iPad or an
iPhone and the potentially high data costs so I thought this BBC article may be
of interest.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17539421

Some excerpts:

Under new rules agreed by the European Parliament, consumers will pay no more
than 29 cents (24p) per minute to make a call and 70 cents (59p) per megabyte
 for data downloads across Europe.

and
The new roaming charges will progressively go down and by July 2014 the aim
is that roaming consumers will pay no more than 19 cents (15p) to make a call
and 20 cents (16p) per megabyte of data. The cost of receiving a call will
fall to 5 cents (4p) and sending a text to 6 cents (5p).

I have a Macbook Pro and there is a Card slot on the left side. It has never

Slow URL loading

2012-03-28 Thread John Thompson
Good Morning List,
Hopefully someone may have an answer. Just recently (in the last week
actually) when clicking on web URL's the spinning sun goes on in Safari for
quite some time. up to three or more minutes at times, before the site
activates. I have also tried Firefox.
Any ideas?

Regards

2012-03-28 Thread John Thompson
Further to my earlier post. On information from my server (Primus) I have
cleared the data stored in Safari Preferences/Security.

All works fine now

Re: Slow URL loading

2012-03-28 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi John,

I’m a bit concerned what Data did Primus ask you to clear in Safari Preferences
 Security?
Safari Preferences Security has your settings for ‘Fraudulent Sites’ Web
content: Enable plug-ins, Java, JavaScript Block pop-up windows.

Empty Cache and Reset Safari are under Safari (in Menu bar).

Cheers,
Ronni
