Re: How can I stop folders using the All My Files view?

2012-04-11 Thread Glenn Nicholas
Thanks Ronni,

Looks like this is not a common issue, I'll provide more details about what
is happening.

Firstly, if you are like me and don’t find “All My Files” that useful, you
can do what I have done and 'hide it away’.
- already done, long ago

At first glance that’s all you need to do, but you’ll soon notice that
every new Finder window now opens with All My Files” displayed by default.
- I don't have All My Files as the default, changed long ago

If you don’t find your answer to your Finder View problem Glenn, please
 post back.

In summary:
- I turned off the relevant All My Files preferences after upgrading to Lion
- in most situations, Finder windows behave normally, using List view etc
and responding to View Options
- but ... when a Finder window displays either the Desktop or Downloads
directory, then and only then does the Finder window switch to using the
All My Files style of presentation. That is, if you set the Arrange setting
to any date based option, it breaks by Today, Yesterday etc, and changes
treatment of column headings, stopping any clicking on the date column to
change ascending/descending etc. It is not possible to view either of these
directories using the normal List view
- If from that Finder window I change the display to any directory other
than Desktop or Downloads, Finder drops the All My Files style of display
behaves normally with List view etc.

This is a bit strange, here is a link to some screenshots showing examples.

Re: Mail text size

2012-04-11 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi People who have been following this subject,

We have exhausted every way of making Mail Text larger, but please bear with me
just for one last response.

I have been annoyed for years with incoming mail from Windows Users showing
much smaller than other incoming mail.
I actually get annoyed that Windows Users even email me… (only kidding Wendy at
work, who uses a Mac in her ‘Real Life' ;-))

Well, today I was determined to solve this annoying problem, and I have
achieved what I set out to achieve.
My eyes are not as good as they used to be, (it’s not anything to do with ‘Age’
Daniel)… it’s spending anything up to 20 hours a day working on computer
screens. So I like my email font at size16…

The Solution:

The tiny font problem usually involves HTML mail coming from Windows users (why
don’t they get a Mac to email me)!
Fortunately, you can set Mail to have a minimum that it will use for HTML
messages... but you have to go to the Terminal for it.

1. Quit Mail
2. Open Terminal.app
3. Copy Paste in the following command:

defaults write com.apple.mail MinimumHTMLFontSize 16

Note that you can use any size you like, it does not have to be 16. For eyes
that can see well, probably 12.
If you don't like it, run the command again with a different number.

Continual Apple ID entry with Apple TV ?

2012-04-11 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

A friend using the dark side has set up an Apple TV to play music and home
videos on his HDTV.
He is using a Windows laptop.
However every time he turns it on he has to re-enter his Apple ID.
To annoy even further every time he selects something new on the menu he has to
re-enter his Apple ID.
There does not appear to be an option to remember the ID anywhere.

Any ideas please ?
It has me stumped.

Has he purchased any music or movies in iTunes, if so has he used the same

For some reason, whenever I view my Desktop and also my Downloads

Using Skype

2012-04-11 Thread Ian Reid
Good Evening All

I have some children and grandchildren going overseas on Friday for some weeks
and they have suggested that I should download Skype to enable convenient
contact. I have a six month-old MacBook Pro 13 in. and an iPad 1. To which
would be the best to download Skype and are there any catches to beware of in
operation.

Thanks,

Re: Using Skype

2012-04-11 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Ian

You should find Skype already installed. (Have a look in your Applications
folder).
Otherwise you can download it from here:-
http://www.skype.com/intl/en/get-skype/on-your-computer/macosx/
Free version is generally fine.
Pretty easy to set up once installed, just create an account (noting your Skype
name you choose and your password for safe keeping).
Then you just add in their Skype names and you're away.

Kind regards
Daniel

With the MacBook you will be able to use video Skype. If your iPad is the 1st
generation you can only make Skype voice calls because of the lack of a camera.
Both are free calls, of course.

I actually get annoyed that Windows Users even email me… (only kidding Wendy

Well, today I was determined to solve this annoying problem, and I have
achieved what I set out to achieve.
My eyes are not as good as they used to be, (it’s not anything to do with

 The Solution:

The tiny font problem usually involves HTML mail coming from Windows users
(why don’t they get a Mac to email me)!

A courageous article!!

Fortunately the OSX version I use, 12 I think, doesn't have the same AWFUL
bloated toolbars of the PC version.

Where Word failed for me this week was when I tried to PDF a 155 page report
that included a lot of internal cross reference links. Epic fail to send any of
the hot links into the PDF format.

I opened the document in OSX Pages, saved it as a PDF and voila, all links
worked properly when PDF'd. If only Pages did styles and stylesheets better
it'd be an able replacement for Word for my report writing work.

files (like bank balances, password reminders, timelogs in excel,

them back form the laptop with the newer version to the computer with
the older version etc.
So - does it seem I can use Dropbox to do this?BUT - does that mean
they can no longer reside where they currently do eg MacHD, Users,
Blitto, Documents, Rod Personal folder???Do i have to shift them
to  MacHD, Users, Blitto, Dropbox       if i want them to sync
between laptops? So IF that is true I suppose I could create
aliases for these documents back in the original places they used to
live and point the alises at the Dropbox folder
Please - Am I on the right track here???
Another question: if i load the dropbox ap on my iphone - will ALL the
stuff somehow sync to the phone as well??? But there isnt enough
room.Or does the phone ap just look for the stuff on the website???
Finally - is the Dropbox site secure enough to be putting my personal

Re: Dropbox (for Dummies)

2012-04-11 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Blitto,

Have you checked https://www.dropbox.com/help it answers a lot of your
questions.

There is a wiki site too: http://blog.dropbox.com/
And actually there is a Dropbox 4 Dummies … it’s for Windows of course ;-) but
it does show the iPhone.
http://dropbox4dummies.blogspot.com.au/

Your life's work, wherever you are:

Dropbox is a free service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos
anywhere. This means that any file you save to your Dropbox will automatically
save to all your computers https://www.dropbox.com/install, phones
https://www.dropbox.com/install and even the Dropbox website
https://www.dropbox.com/install.

Dropbox also makes it super easy to share with others, whether you're a student
or professional, parent or grandparent. Even if you accidentally spill a latte
on your laptop, have no fear! You can relax knowing that Dropbox always has you
covered, and none of your stuff will ever be lost.

All your stuff, when you need it:

Dropbox works hard to make sure that all your files are the same no matter
where you're working from. This means that you can start working on a computer
at school or the office, and finish from your home computer.

Never email yourself a file again! Download Dropbox for your phone to simplify
your life even more — flip through all your photos or review that spreadsheet
even while on the road. Dropbox lets you work from any computer or phone with
the confidence that you'll always have everything you need.

Share what matters most:

Dropbox makes sharing so easy that you'll be amazed at the things you can do.

Invite your friends, family and teammates to any folder in your Dropbox, and
it'll be as if you saved that folder straight to their computers.

You can send people links to specific files in your Dropbox too.

This makes Dropbox perfect for team projects, sharing party photos with
friends, or recording your band's new album.

Dodge catastrophe with a click:

Even if your computer has a meltdown, your stuff is always safe in Dropbox and
can be restored in a snap.
Dropbox is like a time machine that lets you undo mistakes and even undelete
files you accidentally trash.
Your Dropbox is always ready for action from
the Dropbox website too!

What else can you do?:

People around the world rely on Dropbox to help them design buildings, compose
music, run businesses, write books and even coordinate disaster relief.

Whether you're an entrepreneur or a teacher, a photographer or an astronomer,
an artist or an activist, Dropbox simplifies your life.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Dropbox (for Dummies)

2012-04-11 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Blitto,

Ronni (as usual) has given you lots of good stuff and links to more - so I
won't try to add to the general stuff.

With regard to your specific query re the phone version:

Another question: if i load the dropbox ap on my iphone - will ALL the
stuff
somehow sync to the phone as well??? But there isnt enough
room.Or does the
phone ap just look for the stuff on the website???

Dropbox is (I think) particularly good here - as you browse, it downloads
the index so that your phone sees all the documents in your dropbox folder
in the cloud - but it doesn't try to download them all and fill up your
phone :o)

What happens is if you try and access one of the documents, it downloads
that specific document so you can use it but, by default, it doesn't keep
it.

However, if you WANT that specific document on your phone you can hit the
favourites button and the document will then be kept on the phone.

I found this particularly useful on our overseas trip where we usually had
wi-fi at the hotel but not out-and-about - prior to our trip I put lots of
useful info (walks, transport maps timetables etc) into dropbox then when
we got to a new city I would get the info when I was wi-fi connected and
mark as favorite to keep it on the phone for when we were out of wi-fi
contact.

It worked really well.

HTH

Cheers

Hi WAMUGersTrying to get my head around Dropbox.
I use it to share files with
people or to send the school magazine to
the printer etc.BUT i am thinking
maybe i can use it to sync stuff
between my macs.Particularly my School
 Macbook Pro running Snow
Leopard and my personal MacBook Air running
 Lion.There are a couple of
files i might like to use on both these computers
 eg Word and Excel
files (like bank balances, password reminders, timelogs in
 excel,
maybe articles i am writing etc)These days i try to remember to
 swap
them back form the laptop with the newer version to the computer with
the
 older version etc.
So - does it seem I can use Dropbox to do this?BUT - does
 that mean
they can no longer reside where they currently do eg MacHD,
 Users,
Blitto, Documents, Rod Personal folder???Do i have to shift
 them
to  MacHD, Users, Blitto, Dropbox       if i want them to sync
between
laptops? So IF that is true I suppose I could create
aliases for these
documents back in the original places they used to
live and point the alises
 at the Dropbox folder
Please - Am I on the right track here???
Another
question: if i load the dropbox ap on my iphone - will ALL the
stuff somehow
sync to the phone as well??? But there isnt enough
room.Or does the phone ap
just look for the stuff on the website???
Finally - is the Dropbox site secure
enough to be putting my personal
files on?
Yes - have looked over the dropbox
tutorials and help a bit this
morning
Many thanks
blitto

 Hi Blitto,

Ronni (as usual) has given you lots of good stuff and links to more - so I
won't try to add to the general stuff.

With regard to your specific query re the phone version:

 HTH

 Cheers

 Neil
