Re: Setting up a password?

2014-05-26 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Denise, I sent this reply on 25 May but don't think it hit the list.

You must already have a Password for your Administrator User Account to be able
to operate your Mac.

Go to System Preferences Users Groups
Users Groups - Select your User Account
Then Select - Login Options Automatic Login - Select 'OFF'

When you click on the login options button, you'll find various settings on
right part of system preference panel. Find an option named - Automatic login
and select OFF for it to completely turn off the automatic on startup
Display login window: you can select 'List of users' or 'Name and password'

Go to System Preferences Security Privacy - General
You can set other security options here - Require password - immediately after
sleep or screen saver begins or after a time.
Click on 'Advanced' for other security settings

If you find all the options grayed out ( not selectable ), you can unlock it by
clicking on the LOCK icon located in bottom - left corner, you have to enter
your password to make any changes

Cheers,
Ronni

Another Device on the Network

2014-05-26 Thread Julie Bedford
Hi all,

I was typing an email and the following box popped up on my screen. No one
else was on the network at
the time. Any suggestions ?

Another device on the network is using your computer’s IP address (10.1.1.4).
Try connecting again later. If you continue to have problems, change the IP
address of this computer or the IP address of the other device. Contact the
network administrator if you need more information.

I clicked on the ? on the box, but it went to a page saying the selected
topic is currently unavailable.

Thanks

Re: Another Device on the Network

2014-05-26 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Julie,

This happens sometimes with the DHCP server, which mistakenly assigns the same
IP address to two devices, but don’t blame your router. An iPad, and iPhone is
often the culprit, it seems these iOS devices like to maintain the same IP
address and will attempt to force themselves onto the same IP that they had
previously been assigned.

The easiest solution is to just reset the router, but that can be a pain
depending on your access to the router itself. If resetting the router is a no
go, you can 'renew your DHCP lease' in OS X through the Network settings System
Preferences Network - select Wi-Fi - click Advanced then TCP/IP - then
click 'Renew DHCP Lease'
Click OK

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Apple TV, iPad iView

2014-05-26 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Laura

The first thing I would try is to restart the modem, as if it's had slow
downs this can affect it as well.
Power it off for a minute or two, then power it on again. After another few
minutes then try accessing iView again and see how it goes.

It could also be a hardware issue in the modem itself (or wireless) or some
wireless interference from surrounding houses that has changed recently as
well.
(Modems tend to last about 3-5 years on average)…..

But I'd try a power cycle of the modem first and see if that improves it.

Kind regards
Daniel

programme would start, go for a short while, then stop and revert to showing
only on my iPad. No matter how many times I tried the result was the same.

This morning, as an experiment, I tried using iView on my MacBookPro,
choosing Airplay to send to Apple TV. Again it does not work, stops and
starts on Apple TV and the sound is distorted. This would not be my preferred
way to view but thought it worth a try.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I think the problem may have started with
the updated iView web page but there are some programmes that still work
seamlessly e.g. Australian Story. I have checked Settings on AppleTV but can
see nothing untoward there. Software is up to date.

On 26 May 2014, at 2:19 pm, Ronda Brown ro...@mac.com wrote:

 Hi Julie,

This happens sometimes with the DHCP server, which mistakenly assigns the
same IP address to two devices, but don’t blame your router. An iPad, and

same IP address and will attempt to force themselves onto the same IP that
 they had previously been assigned.

The easiest solution is to just reset the router, but that can be a pain
depending on your access to the router itself. If resetting the router is a
no go, you can 'renew your DHCP lease' in OS X through the Network settings
System Preferences Network - select Wi-Fi - click Advanced then TCP/IP
 - then click 'Renew DHCP Lease'
 Click OK

I have learnt to ignore these warnings. In the past I have taken to running a
LAN scanner in an attempt to discover the other device. Invariably it has not
been detectable. It's my feeling that by the time the message has been
generated, and I've launched the LAN scanner and waited for it to scan the
network, the DHCP server has already resolved the problem. I scarcely bother
about it anymore. Real problems show up through actual use. For example, a
device experiencing an IP address conflict will not be working properly on the
local network or the internet. In most cases a simple restart with sort it out.

Re: Ram for MBPro 15 8,2 (2011)

2014-05-26 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Chris,

Firstly, I¹m sure that Daniel can tell you local pricing and track down the
correct memory for your specific model though, unless he fancies a road
trip, Dunsborough might be a bit far for a service trip to fit it ;o))

Alternatively OWC is always a good site to check not only do they match
the correct RAM to the correct model (you just select your actual MBPro
model from the available menu) they also have videos showing you how to
install it.

OWC website http://www.macsales.com/
Page for MacBook Pro memory upgrades
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade
Installation videos http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/

I have used OWC for RAM several times as, like you, I am in country WA and I
have found that I can order online and get the RAM shipped from the US
quicker than more local suppliers can get it to me in Albany - the service
has always been very quick and they offer lifetime warranty on their RAM
http://eshop.macsales.com/Service/warranty/owc-memory.cfm

Macfixit http://www.macfixit.com.au/apple-memory-ram seem to be an
Australian outlet for OWC but for my last order it was actually cheaper
for me to buy direct from OWC in the US.

Of course, no matter where you buy it, if you are fitting it yourself you
might find the OWC installation videos handy ;o)

HTH

Cheers

If possible are you able to give me some advice on what is the 'correct' ram
to use and what sort of cost would I be looking at?

I didnt know what to expect so did some searching online.

I checked the apple.au http://apple.au store and they dont stock it.
Also a site MacRam which sells 'premium 16gb kits' for about $250 and 'value
range 16gb kits' for about $220.
I have asked the local Busselton Computer west store for a price as well.

Re: Ram for MBPro 15 8,2 (2011)

2014-05-26 Thread Neil Houghton
I just noticed you included the model no in your subject so the specific
16GB product for your MBPro 15 8,2 (2011) seems to be:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/1333DDR3S16P/
for US$194.99 + $2.99 international mail delivery + $0.50 shipping Insurance
(to WA 6281)

They offer a number of different shipping options but the international mail
delivery is the cheapest and is what I used in March this year it was very
quick how can they do that for $2.99??

I also had a bonus? when I got a replacement iPad charger from them not
only was it cheaper (genuine Apple part) but it came with the US power
adaptor normally that might be a disadvantage but as I already have
(several of) the AUS power adaptor I¹m now covered if I visit the US ;o)
