Hi Bill, have you tried resetting the phone by pressing down the on off key and 
the home key together. You have to hold them down until it begins to restart.

Have you tried linking it to your computer and doing a restore as a new phone, 
then Using your backup to restore things.

Tried that but the only things that has changed was the message count from 
20,621 to 20,622 although two messages were received.
